Oh, the sweet indecision of a South Texas Fall

November in our area brings with it so many difficult decisions…

  • Shall we dress for the – er – chilly 60 degree November mornings, or the 80 degree afternoons?
  • Should we turn on the air conditioner, or rough it?
  • Will we get better gas mileage if we use the air conditioner in the car, or roll down the windows?
  • Does ice cream taste as good when the outside temperature dips below 80 degrees?
  • Should we consider grilling steaks for Thanksgiving dinner, so we don’t heat up the house?
  • Would the children work too slowly if we did school outside?
  • Should we dig the coats out of storage and bring them along just in case it might get cold when we’re out at night?
  • Did I jump the gun and do the Semi-Annual Clothes Swap too early?
  • Hot coffee or iced coffee?

I love Texas!

  1. I agree! We moved to San Antonio from Chicago, and fall has thrown me for a loop! We did turn our a/c on a couple of days (during the really humid time.) But, it’s Nov! I should be starting to bundle and putting my kids in short sleeves for the odd 60degree day, not putting them in sweaters for the odd 60degree day!

  2. Yes, I live southwest of Austin. I am quite perturbed by the fact that my AC is still running in November! *swelter* :)

  3. Hi there I stumbled upon your blog from the biblical womanhood one. Where in South Texas do you live. We used to live in Hunt, TX but have since moved to Oaxaca Mexico as missionaries. Glas to see another SO. Texan! Charlsie

  4. Charlsie,
We live in the San Antonio area, albeit quite a ways out of town. My husband drives 52 miles each way to work!
Thank you for visiting my blog. I’ll bet November in Mexico is even better (or worse, depending on your perspective) than here!

I’m organizing clothes right now. So, how do I decide which ones are winter and which ones are summer?! I think we’re supposed to get a “cold” front on Thursday. We’re a little north of y’all, so maybe you’ll get it Thursday night or Friday. Brrr. 70 degrees.

  6. I cannot even imagine. In the NW here it’s been in the 20′s and 30′s at night and 40′s to 50′s during the day.

Our coats are out, and we’re wearin’ ‘em! Air conditioning!?! Mercy! And we look FORWARD to the turkey cooking in the oven on Thanksgiving because it WILL heat up the room! Hallelujah!

    :-)

  7. So Kim, I guess I should assume you all never get snow(?). I’ve wondered that about San Antonio.

  8. Ruthanne,
I’ve only lived here a total of 6 years (4 before I was married and moved back here 2 years ago).
The natives try to claim that it snows sometimes, but I think it’s just what northerners call frost.

  9. I’m in the boat with you Kim! We have the “still summer and sweatin’” drawer and the “finally, it’s fall” drawer for the dd’s. My 5yo asks me every morning which drawer she needs to pull from. I was so happy to say the Fall drawer this morning! It’s going to be a chilly low of 71 today! Okay, so I’m pushin’ the whole Fall thing, but I was raised in Michigan and I’m dying for some cold days here!
BTW, 12yo dd and I told sweet hubby we want to move north. We yearn for some white stuff! Not alot, but a little would be nice!

  10. My son was ready to pull the box of winter gear out of the basement last night. BRRR…It’s chilly, we’re waking every morning now to frost here in Idaho!
My two year old’s first words each a.m. are “Can I have some hot chocolate?” Although I’m not sure that is only weather related. :)

Oh, I love fall in south Texas although I am ready for the weather to be a little cooler. You know short sleeve shirts or long sleeves with pants. Simple. I have lived her in San Antonio since I was 6 months old and lived up in Ohio with my husband and two children for 3 years. August was crazy to me. i was wearing shorts and no sleeve shirts durning the day but would have to change to pants and short or long sleeves at night. I love Texas and never want to leave again. Yes, it does snow on occassion. We had 13 inch one time in 1985. Usually we just get a few snow flurries every couple of years.
