Once upon a time,
There was a little girl named Katy, she is about ten. Her little sister Emily is seven and her little brother Eric is seven. Emily and Eric are twins!
And her mom her little sister and her little brother were very poor they only had enough for two small meals’ a day. So one-day Katy’s mom told her that she needed to go to the market. And she needed Katy to watch her brother and sister until she got home from the market. After a little while Katy’s mom got home she had bought five loafs of bread!! The next day while Katy was out picking flowers for her mom she saw a horse but it had a horn on her head! A unicorn! She said. Then Katy noticed that she has two colts behind her! A hunter is trying to hunt us down to make us tell where we hid thousands of jewels. That the fairy queen gave to us to hide from the hunter. And now he is trying to catch us to make us tell were we hid the jewels!…

We filled 5 WalMart bags with popsicle wrappers, fallen bottle rockets, the rings and lids from milk jugs, etc.
But here’s the exciting part:
We found, under the trampoline, 14 socks. I feel sure there were many more under the thick carpet of cedar needles. This must have been just the tip of the Sock-berg.
So now I know the answer to the Great Sock Mystery.

Once upon a time, there lived a girl who was captured by Indians but she wanted to escape so she killed the Indians with a gun and knife and ran and got an apple. She ate it and threw the core down on the ground then an apple tree grew and she lived happily ever after.
Except when she died.

Today was our youngest daughter’s birthday. Rachael was born exactly 14 years after the day that hubby and I were engaged, 2 days before our 12th wedding anniversary.
A few things about Rachael:
- She is our first redhead
- She loves the camera
- She loves babies
- She looks just like a redheaded version of her sister Megan. Hubby figured this out last week after stumbling across old toddler pics of Megan.
- Her middle name is for my maternal grandma – whom I think she also resembles somewhat.
- She adores her biggest sister Deanna.
- She knows the answer to the question, “How old are you?” and can demonstrate the answer by making Two with her fingers.

Would anyone like to start now?
The girls and I are still going strong! Today we read through I Corinthians 7. We all read together at the table, and even the slow readers finished before I did because I was fielding so many questions.
But you know what? I didn’t mind a bit, especially when the questions were from passages we had read earlier in the week. Passages that came to mind again as they were reading today. Passages that they quoted from memory, and not because they had purposely memorized them. They were able to quote because it was fresh in their minds. How exciting is that?!
For those who might find it helpful (me, for one), Kaitlyn wrote out a list of the NT books and number of chapters in each one. This should help us keep our place as we continue reading 10 chapters/day.

Here I am thinking out loud:
Hey whaddya-know! We have 4 or 5 Free Passes: we can miss ~1 day/week and still finish within a month. Weekends are tough for us because they’re pretty unstructured – maybe we should plan to read just 10 chapters over each weekend.
We are getting excited as we near the end. The kids can’t believe they’ve nearly finished the entire New Testament, and they never complain now that 10 chapters is too much. Instead, they laugh at how silly they were to feel overwhelmed at the thought of 6 or 8 pages.
Now they are plotting to read the Old Testament. Does anyone know how many chapters that would be? Roughly 3 times as many, but who has the hard numbers?

She had been there for a very long before she had learned how to fly, and after awhile she did not really want to leave. Then she remembered how much fun it was in fairyland, and how she loved her home.
Then remembering how the giant lifted a door, she pushed it up and flew away!
But once she was back to the woods it began to rain, and her wings were getting wet.

I read a book called Childhood of Famous Americans Daniel Boone Young Hunter and Tracker. It is by Augusta Stevenson.
Daniel Boone was a famous hunter and a war hero. He moved around a lot. He lived in places like Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Mississippi. He didn’t like staying in one place for a long time.
He went to visit Indian country and one of his Indian friends invited him to have a challenge like throwing tomahawks into a target and running races. He won all of them and his friend couldn’t stand the thought of any white man beating him and almost threw a tomahawk at him. He had to go back again and lose on purpose so he would be safe outside his home.
When he was only 13 years old he was hunting and didn’t come home for three days in the winter. He shot stuff with his gun that he got when he was 12. His mom thought that maybe he got lost and died. He made his own little house and covered it with animal skins, and said that he liked it better than his home. They had to find him because they thought he was lost.
I liked this book. If someone else loves reading, I think they will like it too. It was very interesting. I learned that Daniel Boone fought against the Indians when they tried to start a war. That seemed like something he wouldn’t do when he was friends with so many Indians. But it was his job to fight for his country.

I finished a book!
Actually, I’ve been finding more time lately to read the 15 or 20 books that live next to my bed. But narrowing it down enough to finish one is an event worthy of trumpets and a parade. And I’ve finished several in recent months!
Thanks to Sherry’s great and timely idea, I’ll be posting a book review once each week from now until…well, until my time or attention span run out. That might not take long, so let’s enjoy it while it lasts, OK?
In spite of the fact that I was an extremely avid reader in my younger (read: childless) years, this was my first G. K. Chesterton book. I have run into many of his quotes and all were worth quoting, so I finally decided to make the plunge. I visited the local Half Price Bookstore hoping to find something worthwhile by the man – hopefully a Father Brown collection – and found just one book by Chesterton. Ah, but it was the very book I had hoped for: The Best of Father Brown!
Father Brown is a mousy little Roman Catholic priest, an accidental detective who solves baffling mysteries like a small and humble Sherlock Holmes: by observing and stating details that seem obvious to him and shockingly insightful to onlookers. A large part of the charm of this collection is in the main character’s observations upon human nature. Chesterton is, indeed, eminently quotable.
In reading this book, I remembered why I enjoy short stories so much: they are perfect for a busy mother, with just small reading allowances in a day’s time. I can take in all the characters and plot in one or two sittings. There is little danger of setting the book down and having to start over again the next time.
Furthermore, short stories are an art far less forgiving of the author. In a well written short story, there is no “filler,” no superfluous details, no meaningless banter and stilted dialogue. A well crafted short story must be well crafted indeed.
I think Chesterton accomplished those ends in the selections presented in this book. It was a thoroughly enjoyable introduction to his work.
Hubby later found the following titles for me to add to our little collection:
- (The Annotated) Innocence of Father Brown – the first Father Brown collection. I have made good progress into this volume and am enjoying it quite as thoroughly as the other.
- The Club of Queer Trades – more humorous mysteries in the style of Father Brown. My edition has original illustrations by the author.
My girl Megan has also posted about a book she read recently – the post was typed by me but entirely dictated by her. Not bad for an 8yo’s first book report (says Proud Mama).
And for more on books, Kaitlyn posted some excerpts from one of her favorite silly books.

However, one -day she heard someone cry for help! She rushed to the edge of fairyland, and saw one of her little friends holding on to the edge the cloud!
After she pulled her up, she was so close to the edge that she fell off! She fluttered down like a butterfly with wet wings.
Then something huge picked her up and put her in a jar. You have to understand that fairies (even small ones,) can sense feelings so she knew that the giant did not mean to scare her.
The giant set her down very gently in the jar and went to her house. She put her in a little cage and gave her a spoon full of honey, a little bit of chocolate and a little cloth for a blanket
Hmm this giant seems to know a lot about what fairies like, she thought to herself.
ill bet she is not going to be able to understand me. She thought. However, what if she can understand maybe shell let me go. How will I get back to fairyland? She asked herself. Moreover, just then she saw a
Pixie man looking for her!

This poor mum finds her children painfully boring and is not ashamed to proclaim it to all who will listen.
I tried to resist clicking on the article when I first heard about it. I wanted to maintain some doubt in my mind about the writer’s motivation. I was hoping that she just had a bad day (somebody send that woman some chocolate!) or that she was flippantly confessing a character flaw and people were misreading her.
But after reading it, I couldn’t give her the benefit of the doubt. She made herself crystal clear. She is unabashedly bored silly by her children and all activities related to motherhood. She is glad that her children have finally learned this and now leave her alone.
I’ll admit that sometimes I don’t feel like doing all the things that a Perfect Mom does. We don’t play cards or board games nearly enough – hardly ever! I sometimes sigh about stopping what I’m working on to admire yet another creation or amusing antic. I roll my eyes at messy activities. My kids have never done papier mache.
This may be natural and common. We all feel this way sometimes, right?
But I’ll call such an attitude what is: sin. And I’ll repent. And then, with God’s grace, I’ll rejoice in the blessings He has given me.

On the title page Jack (Jack and the bean stock) the narrator says
“I know. I know.
The page is upside down.
I meant to do that.
Who ever looks at that
dedication stuff anyhow?
If you really want to read
it you can always stand on your head.”
Here is the introduction:
A long time ago people used to tell magical stories of wonder and enchantment. Those were called Fairy Tales. Those stories are not in this book. The stories in this book are almost Fairy Tales. But not quite. The stories in this book are Fairly stupid Tales. I mean what else would you call “Goldilocks and the three elephants”? This girl walking through the forest smells peanut porridge cooking. She decides to break into the elephants ‘ house, eat the porridge, sit in the chairs, and sleep in the beds. Bu when she gets in the house she can’t climb up on baby elephants chair because it’s to big. And she can’t climb up on papa elephant’s chair Because it’s much to big. So she goes home. The End. And if you don’t think that’s fairly stupid you should go read “Little Red Running Shorts” or “The Stinky Cheese Man.” In fact, you should definintely go read those stories now, Because the rest of the introduction just goes on and doesn’t really say anything. I stuck it on the end here to fill up the rest of the page and make it look like I really knew what I was talking about So stop reading now. I mean it. Quit reading. Turn the page. If you read this last sentence, it won’t tell you anything.
That is the introduction and here are my two favorite stories:
Proverbs 26

One thing I like is that it tells how bad and worthless a fool is an then it says “Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” and then it says “The lazy man is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who can answer sensibly.”
I high-lighted some of my favorite verses.
1 As snow in summer and rain in harvest, So honor is not fitting for a fool. Like a flitting sparrow, like a flying swallow, So a curse without cause shall not alight.
3 A whip for the horse, A bridle for the donkey, And a rod for the fool’s back.
4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Lest you also be like him.
5 Answer a fool according to his folly, Lest he be wise in his own eyes.
6 He who sends a message by the hand of a fool cuts off his own feet and drinks violence.
7 Like the legs of the lame that hang limp Is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
8 Like one who binds a stone in a sling is he who gives honor to a fool.
9 Like a thorn that goes into the hand of a drunkard is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
10 The great God who formed everything gives the fool his hire and the transgressor his wages.
11 As a dog returns to his own vomit, So a fool repeats his folly.
12 Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
13 The lazy man says,“There is a lion in the road! A fierce lion is in the streets!”
14 As a door turns on its hinges, So does the lazy man on his bed.
15 The lazy man buries his hand in the bowl; It wearies him to bring it back to his mouth.
16 The lazy man is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who can answer sensibly.
17 He who passes by and meddles in a quarrel not his own is like one who takes a dog by the ears.
18 Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death
19 Is the man who deceives his neighbor, And says, “I was only joking!” (or “just kidding”)
20 Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; And where there is no talebearer, strife ceases.
21 As charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to fire, So is a contentious man to kindle strife.
22 The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles,And they go down into the inmost body.
23 Fervent lips with a wicked heart Are like earthenware covered with silver dross.
24 He who hates, disguises it with his lips, And lays up deceit within himself;
25 When he speaks kindly, do not believe him,For there are seven abominations in his heart;
26 Though his hatred is covered by deceit, His wickedness will be revealed before the assembly
27 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, And he who rolls a stone will have it roll back on him.
28 A lying tongue hates those who are crushed by it, And a flattering mouth works ruin.
For part of bible every day we read a chapter of proverbs today we read chapter 26 because it is the 26th.
