Can anyone recommend an infant carrier?
I used to have an Infantino – it was highly flexible: worked 6 different ways. Every single way was a major pain.
I’d like something simple – easy to get in and out for mom and baby, and lightweight enough to use in Texas.
I have and love a basic backpack carrier with a lightweight aluminum frame for older babies. It’s not so great on the shoulders once the baby gets heavy, but it’s light and cool and a snap to slip on and off.
Which carriers do you love? Which ones do you hate?

Rachael’s trauma
Current giveaway: Grandpa Jake's Campfire Cooker
Once upon an evening when we were doing family worship Rachael was tipping her chair. I wasn’t paying attention to but after a couple of minutes she tipped to far and fell back, a couple of days later she tipped to far but this time as she started to fall she screamed “Fall fall faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” so Dad caught her that time. Ever since when ever someone tips their chair and Rachael sees it she runs over to push there chair into place yelling ” No faaaall” or “Uh-oh fall”
WOW!!!!!!!!!

We have some of these at our home
A newspaper article about American Snout Butterflies in San Antonio last week:
Good stuff

Good stuff…like the 2 Ghiradelli’s Intense Dark Twilight Delight 72% Cacao bars that Hubby brought me last night. Yes, the anniversary bliss goes on.
I don’t do this often, but for want of something important to say (something more profound than “mmmm…chocolate”) I’ll share a few links that are worth passing along:
- Scott Adams has figured out the answer to world peace. Ok, maybe not – but he’s good for a laugh!
- Grow Your Blog?s Readership By Targeting Readers – HT to Melissa Wiley for mentioning ProBlogger. I haven’t read the entire article yet, but it’s definitely on my list of things to do.
- Crystal wrote an article (and reposted an older article of hers) on how to publish a book – a goal I am very slowly working toward.
- Crystal also has a good one on Small home organization 101. Since we have 10 people in just under 1200 square feet, we already live by many of her principles – at least in theory.
- Valerie Jacobsen is blogging again on her topic of expertise: living books, and how to find them. Great tips on locating unadvertised book sales!
Oh, and did I mention the 2 Ghiradelli Intense Dark Espresso Escape bars? 60% cacao with finely ground espresso beans. Oh my.
Family Worship
Current giveaway: Grandpa Jake's Campfire Cooker
A reader inquired about our family worship time. This is something we strive (and often fail) to do morning and evening, and what we do is constantly changing. However, each session normally consists of prayer, Bible reading, and singing.
Morning:
We usually read a daily chapter of Proverbs and perhaps a Psalm after Hubby has left for work. We normally divide the chapter among those of us who can read fluently. We stop to discuss the passages when somebody has a pertinent comment or a cross reference they would like to share.
We often choose a verse from Proverbs to write on the whiteboard (the Choosing and the Writing of the Daily Proverb is a great privilege) .
We close with a few songs: usually a Psalm, often a couple of children’s songs.
Evening:
We open with prayer.
Hubby chooses Bible passages. He often uses a portion of Old Testment history, or an epistle.
Hubby does most of the talking in our evening devotions, although he actively involves the children: he asks questions, rather than allowing a lot of commenting. He is a very engaging teacher, and usually has no trouble keeping the children’s attention. He is not a preacher by trade, but the blood runs strong in the family.
We close again with songs, but usually more Psalms or hymns and less children’s songs in the evenings.
Again, this is what we strive for – imperfectly. We sometimes do more, often do less, and there is a good bit of variation to what we do.
Would anyone else care to share what they do during their family worship times, and when?
Our happy anniversary

August 1 was our 14th wedding anniversary. Hubby was able to take the day off from work, and it was lovely!
Monday night, he brought me two potted miniature rose bushes. They look beautiful on the dining room table – I can see them from where I sit now.
That morning, the children woke us with breakfast in bed, complete with fresh brewed coffee.
Later, we dropped the children at my parents house over the hill, where they could spend the evening playing with my 4 youngest sibs (ages 8-13). Big families certainly have their advantages.
Hubby and I (with the baby in tow) hotfooted it out of there. We started with a drink at a coffee shop. Mine was cold, his was hot. As usual, his was better. One of these days I’ll learn to order whatever he does.
Then we headed for our favorite date locale: a book store. We started out at Half-Price Books, where we found a copy of St. Augustine’s City of God. I hang my head in shame to admit that we didn’t already own a copy. We also picked up 4 Calvin & Hobbes books for the children – just $1 apiece. These are very nearly consumables at our house.
Then we split an ice cream from the shop next door, which had marble slabs and claimed to serve the best ice cream in the county. It was good, but we weren’t convinced.
Next we moved on to Border’s Books. Here we browsed with little intention of buying. This is where you add books to your wish list and go home to shop online. But a little heavy hinting on Hubby’s part as he oh-so-conveniently excused himself to the men’s room made it easy for me to buy him a gift: a clearance copy of The Complete Mustang, in memory of last year’s anniversary when he surprised me by renting an ’05 Mustang convertible for an entire week!
For dinner, we shared a gi-normous burrito from a local chain.
For dessert, we sampled the wares at another marble-slab ice cream shop. We had Chocolate Swiss with fresh walnuts folded in. mmmm. Better – quite impressive, in fact, but still not the best in the county.
We made the traditional obligatory trip to WalMart. What is a trip to town without WalMart? I nursed the baby in the parking lot while we discussed books and ice cream.
On our way out of town, we hurried to the third marble slab ice cream chain shop – the best. I ordered a large french vanilla to split, but in my haste I made a grave error. Pecan pralines stirred into buttery rich, ultra creamy, not too sweet french vanilla ice cream are a bad idea. We ended up spitting them out like so many watermelon seeds. Now I’ll have to go back and try again without the pralines. tsk, tsk.
Tonight, the girls are cooking for us again. At their own request, Hubby and I will have a special candlelit dinner for two. The children have already eaten grilled cheese sandwiches and cheetohs, and the dishes are done. When Hubby gets home (any minute!) we will enjoy a kid-cooked dinner of Bacon Chicken, fresh sliced tomatos, pumpernickel toast and mixed veggies sauteed in bacon drippings with a touch of onion and garlic.
I could really get into this anniversary thing.
Blogger alternatives
Current giveaway: Grandpa Jake's Campfire Cooker
I’m thinking of trying another blog server someday, but I’ve done absolutely no research so far. Does anyone want to sing the praises of a Blogger alternative? And since I’m so lazy busy, it would be great if you could mention the cost, if any.
Some questions I have:
- How easy do the competitors make it to bring over the old stuff?
- What if I wanted to categorize my old posts?
- Do they have any restrictions worth mentioning?
- Are they more reliable than Blogger?
- Do they have important, can’t-live-without features that I never knew I was missing on Blogger?
- Do they allow anonymous comments? For example, I don’t visit Xanga blogs often because they require you to have (and remember!) a Xanga username and password in order to comment. Will my Blogger friends and non-blogging friends leave me if I move to your favorite blog host?
Also, how much do you all love me? If I were to change the url of my blog, just once, would everyone follow me? Or would I have to make new friends like I did every time we moved when I was a kid?
Lucky they’re cute? I think not.

You know the saying: She’s just lucky she’s so cute!
I like that saying – really, I do. But I have to object.
Our adorable little redhead had her will crossed by Deanna the other day and stomped away muttering to herself. “Nana brat. brat. ” Then she informed all of her sisters in the living room: “Nana brat!”
She really needed to be corrected; this was neither appropriate nor acceptable. But all we could do was try to muffle our laughter. Because we failed to correct her (and because, in spite of our best efforts, she heard our muffled laughter), she will repeat the behavior. Probably several times, since it has now been reinforced rather than corrected.
Poor kid. It’s too bad she’s so cute.
gasp!

gasp…must have…Internet!
Our Internet service was down all day yesterday and half of this morning as well. It was horrible.
And yesterday was our 14th wedding anniversary. It was wonderful. I’ll post about it later.
If the Internet stays up.
WFMW: emergency diapers
Current giveaway: Grandpa Jake's Campfire Cooker
I hate, hate, HATE that feeling you get when you are out and realize that you forgot the diaper bag, so I always keep an emergency supply with the baby. What’s the one thing that goes everywhere the baby does? The carseat! I just lift the liner of the carseat and tuck 2 diapers in one side, and a small package of wipes in the other side. This works with the forward facing toddler seats, but it’s especially convenient with the infant seats because I use the carseat to carry my infants around.
It’s a small and simple thing, but it sure makes my life easier.
Now, on the rare occasions when I leave the house w/o my brain or diaper bag (OK, maybe not so rare), at least I have enough to get us through several hours. Enough diapers, that is. I don’t carry extra brains around with me – I’ve found that I can do without that in a pinch. After all, some people live that way.
