Big kids helping little ones
Current giveaway: Grandpa Jake's Campfire Cooker
When I was growing up the big kids always helped the little ones, but after I was married my parents developed a more formal system for this. They assigned a big kid to help and watch over each little one so that everyone knew who would be holding the 3yo’s hand when they poured out of the van and into the grocery parking lot.
I love this system, and we as our children get older we have been delighted to implement it within our own house. We find that most of our girls are ready to be formal Helpers at age 8-9.
Gradually, the duties of the older Helper toward their young Charges have expanded. Thehey in no way replace me as a mother, but they certainly help me in my role and they begin to learn mothering skills along the way.
Here are some of the ways they often help:
- Brush/style hair – this is a huge help in houseful of long-haired girls.
- Brush teeth…in theory at least…
- Help dress, or check clothes to see that the Charge is completely and appropriately dressed for home or outings (Is Rachael wearing shoes today? How about panties?)
- Hold hands in public
- Change diapers (not exclusively, but the Charge is the default go-to girl when there’s a diaper to be changed)
- Help and instruct little Charge in cleaning up her messes that she invariably makes.
- Dish plates for little ones at fellowship meals.
- Reading lessons
We are also considering rooming each little Charge with her Helper so that they can more easily help and oversee dressing, bed-making, keeping possessions picked up, etc.
I know many other families do this as well. Do you have a system in place? How do your older ones help with the little ones?
It’s Monday. Let’s learn a Hebrew word.

edited to finish the post after the baby hit the Publish button halfway through. Did you see his version?
By 9:00 this morning, I had already caught vomit in my hands from 2 children, listened to whines of “I’m siiiiick” from several others, and discovered two small cracks in the case of my laptop – probably from the UPS man tossing it out of his moving vehicle as he drove past.
It must be Monday.
On the bright side, in reading the footnotes of my Bible and using Strong’s Concordance inside E-Sword, I have learned that:
- The word translated as LORD (all capitals) is nearly always Jehovah (or Yhwh), God’s personal name. I wonder why it’s not translated that way.
- Hallelujah (or alleleuia) is the literal Hebrew for Praise Jehovah. Throughout the Psalms, whenever you see the line Praise ye the LORD, it is literally Hallu Yah (a shortened form of Yhwh).
So even on Monday, even when the children are sick and whining and you’re annoyed at the UPS man and the house is a mess and you haven’t yet caught up on laundry from the weekend and you don’t expect much help from the children because they probably really are sick after hanging around with sick aunts and uncles all weekend (who didn’t mention being sick until after the fact)…even today, let’s all say Hallu Yah. See? Now you can say something important in Hebrew.

The book of Joshua: a quiz
Current giveaway: Grandpa Jake's Campfire Cooker
Our church has been studying the book of Joshua for Sunday School. The next two weeks will be a review quiz, in which the congregation separates into two groups and competes to answer questions chapter by chapter. Children 10yo and under are allowed to have a “lifeline,” meaning they can get help from an adult of their choice.
Ideally, everyone will have at least one turn to answer a question.
In preparation (and as an aid in my own studying) I made up a list of sample questions. So far I have covered the first 8 chapters.
How many can you answer without looking? The number after each question tells in which verse you’ll find the answer. Oops. I got sloppy – no verse numbers for chapter 2 questions.

Here’s a game you can play without guilt! Who wants to play along? Read through the first 8 chapters first, then take the quiz – no peeking. You could even read it aloud to your children, and do the quiz as a group. In this case, you might want to stop and do the questions after each chapter, or break it into two or more sessions.
When you’re done, use your Bible to check your answers.
Give yourself a point for each correct answer, and post your score in the comments. Be sure to tell whether it’s a collective effort or you did it alone.
