Cell Phone vs. Bible
Posted on May 21st, 2007 by kimc
I recently reconsidered my priorities and moved many items out of my purse to make room for a small Bible. Right on cue, Hubby gave me a lovely little Bible for Mother’s Day. It is compact but the text is a nice comfortable size, and it has a snap flap to help protect it in the uncivilized inner regions of my purse.
Considering that I only recently found room in my purse for a Bible while my phone’s right to ride with me was undisputed for 3 years, I found the following just a wee bit convicting:
What would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phones?
- What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?
- What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?
- What if we flipped through it several times a day?
- What if we used it to receive text messages?
- What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it?
- What if we used it as we traveled?
- What if we used it in case of an emergency?
You loved it, right? Here's more like it:

I have a tiny Bible I keep in my purse so when I am somewhere waiting I have something good to read! Also, no more misplaced Bibles b/c I don’t take my big one outside the house.
Plus it brings good luck … ok just kidding!
I carry a New Testament in my purse, and so does my daughter (who’s 4 and can’t read - but hey, good habit to start right?) sometimes I even have those little Daliy Word devotionals that my church hands out in my car…
Let’s see…
1) I don’t get roaming charges when I use my bible too far from a cell tower. (Unless you count criticism from nonChristians who don’t think religion should exist outside the church if at all).
2) It doesn’t drop calls.
3) It’s never out of range.
4) I have never yelled at it, slammed it on the couch or otherwise abused it and berated it.
Um, I think I like my bible a lot more than my cell phone.
Kim,
Great point, and very humbling….I would like to point out that few have commented on this aspect but they have lots to say about “other topics”….
Yeah, those puppies are so controversial LOL! Well, my oldest son is allergic so maybe they are in my house…
I know what you mean though, chaotic mom, and I’m hoping not to be a person that just rushes into controversy. I do like *friendly* banter though. I feel it helps me clarify my position and even change it sometimes… God bless!

Well, I’d be in trouble. I don’t have a cell phone, and don’t want one. I have phone issues.
I never thought about barrying a little Bible… not a bad idea, I have plenty of room in my diaper bag and no cell phone (my man is 100% anti-technology)!
