A belated birthday wish

Thanks to my keyboard problems, I didn’t get to mention the birthday of our oldest daughter yesterday. We now have a 14yo in the house.
Can you guess what Grandpa C. gave her for her birthday?

D is for dad. Deanna looks like her Dad. I like that look. :)
E is for early. Deanna was an astonishingly early talker, with a working vocabulary of 150 words by her first birthday.
A is for attentive. Her powers of observation have amazed me from the beginning.
N is for naughty. This describes her sense of humor. Let’s just say she enjoys Calvin & Hobbes a little too much. Right, Deanna?
N is for nonstop. How much does Deanna like to read? You got it.
A is for action. Deanna is a young woman of action. Sometimes it’s called “being bossy,” but you could also say she has the elements of a leader. She wants to see things done properly, and this will be a great quality as she grows and learns to use it for God’s glory.

We thank God for this daughter of our youth. May she grow to be the mother of thousands of millions, and let her seed possess the gate of those who hate them. (Genesis 26:40).

  1. Wow! She sounds so much like my oldest (15) she even looks somewhat like Sabriena. I think the leader element may have something to do with being the oldest of a larger family? My daughter also has that strong element of leading (bossing). Glad that she had a wonderful birthday.

  2. Sounds like a great birthday. I remember how much she read just during our short visits to your house. She is great Happy Belated Birthday!

  3. Happy Birthday to Deanna!

    What a sweet blessing. :)

  4. Happy Birthday Deanna!!!!!

  5. well, she sure sounds like an amazing young lady!… You must be really proud of her (in the good sense). :)Happy belated birthday, Deanna!

  6. What a wonderful and fitting tribute to your daughter! Can she marry my son? We sincerely believe in arranged marriage here….and what a great pair they’d make, since my son loves Calvin and Hobbes. I let him get a compilation of C and H at the Goodwill for 39 cents, and all I could hear coming from his room was maniacal giggling!!

The part of your post that touched me the most was that verse!! What a fantastic blessing! I will pray that for my 5 girls!!

  7. Kim,

just a question without any aim of criticism: do you allow under age children to have a gun? I’m quite surprised as it would be illegal in Spain… Is it usual in the USA?

Please send my best regards to Deanna. Happy belated birthday!

  8. Gatxan,

    I am Deanna’s grandpa C.

We encourage it, with proper supervision and training.

The Sixth Commandment, “You shall do no murder,” requires a positive duty to defend ourselves, our family, our neighbors, and even our fellow citizens (aka our nation) from evil doers, even to the point of using violence.

So then, we train our children (and grandchildren) that firearms are a necessary tool, too be used with wisdom and carefulness, too accomplish what God requires.

  9. Happy birthday, Deanna! We missed seeing you and getting to wish you a good day in person Sunday.

  10. p.s. I notice that in the background on your bookshelf is that highly coveted collector’s edition of the complete Calvin & Hobbes…I’ll try not to drool. Was that intentional for the post?

  11. Happy Birthday Deanna! Nice rifle! I got my first 22 for my 14th Christmas and still have it. My dad likes to say that any Texas woman (we lived in El Paso briefly) should know how to ride a horse, fire a rifle and climb a windmill… or something like that :)

  12. Oh man…my daughters (13 and 14) are going to be so excited that Deanna got a gun. Why do I think that I know what will be on their birthday lists this year, now?!
    ;-)

    Very fun.

    Happy birthday.

  13. Dear Granpa C.,

Thanks for your kind explanation. After some information that reaches us, like the massacres in some US educational centers, I was surprised about the rifle for a teenager? We are told here that the problem is the weapons proliferation. Maybe the problem is not the weapons by themselves but the lack of wisdom, carefulness and proper training in their use. I?m relieved to see that these are your very own terms when explaining the present.

  14. gaxtan,
Grandpa already answered your question, but I will add that I think it is illegal in the US for a child to buy or own a gun, but it’s ok for a child to *use* a gun.
We hold it for her in trust, teach her to use it responsibly, and when she is of age it will belong to her.

And regarding the problems with guns here, I think that gun control laws are a part of the problem: they take guns away from responsible, law-abiding citizens while leaving them in the hands of criminals and maniacs. Why are shootings happening in our public schools? Because it is illegal to have a gun anywhere near a school. That means that those who obey the law are sitting ducks for those who don’t. A gun-free zone is a safe-zone for violent criminals to wreak their havok.
If every teacher were armed, I’ll bet school shootings would be a thing of the past.
Do you doubt it? Do a google search on the town of Kennesaw, Georgia.

  15. From the grandmother of 22, more power to you, Grandpa C! We “give” the boys a .22 for their 12th birthday (4 so far). Make no mistake, the girls learn to shoot, too, but we are giving them hope chests.

Happy belated birthday to your sweet daughter, Kim. Your girls are a lively bunch, and I bet, with her personality, she is a wonderful example for them. We are preparing this Saturday for our second (of three) 16 year old party this year! Another milestone.

Again, you are blessed, Kim to have Grandpa C. and other supportive family who understand the principles behind the 2nd Amendment. God bless you all!

  16. kim,
I’ve been reading your blog for while and think you have a beautiful family. I dont think there’s anything wrong with your kid owning a gun, specifically, if you are teaching her to deal with it responsibily. but I have to respectfully disagree with your stance on school shootings.
In Asutralia, such shootings are unheard of and have never happened, because guns are banned, period. You can’t get them anywhere, and accessing them on the black market is extremely difficult and dangerous. The vast majorit of people here do not own a gun, and would not know how the heck to use on if they did.
as for arming teachers, i think that would ultimately lead to the occurance of way too many fatal accidents. Think about it. 30 out-of-control kids who often arn’t sitting at their desks, but wandering around a classroom. How many kdis would be curious enough about guns to want to see and thouch them? all it would take would be a moment of carelessness from the teacher, and one curious kid.
i can’t imagine much mroe dangerous than a school full of guns.
maybe its because i’ve been brought up in a coutnry completely lacking their use, but i know for a fact that school massacres have never happened here, and you’d have to wonder why. I do not believe aussie kids are any better than american kids, but there has to be some reason why thos tragedies haven’t happened here.
anyone, a really late happy birthday to your girl, and I pray that God continues to bless your wonderful family.
