A belated birthday wish

Current giveaway: Grandpa Jake's Campfire Cooker

Thanks to my keyboard problems, I didn’t get to mention the birthday of our oldest daughter yesterday. We now have a 14yo in the house.
Can you guess what Grandpa C. gave her for her birthday?

DSCF2724 A belated birthday wish
D is for dad. Deanna looks like her Dad. I like that look. icon smile A belated birthday wish
E is for early. Deanna was an astonishingly early talker, with a working vocabulary of 150 words by her first birthday.
A is for attentive. Her powers of observation have amazed me from the beginning.
N is for naughty. This describes her sense of humor. Let’s just say she enjoys Calvin & Hobbes a little too much. Right, Deanna?
N is for nonstop. How much does Deanna like to read? You got it.
A is for action. Deanna is a young woman of action. Sometimes it’s called “being bossy,” but you could also say she has the elements of a leader. She wants to see things done properly, and this will be a great quality as she grows and learns to use it for God’s glory.

We thank God for this daughter of our youth. May she grow to be the mother of thousands of millions, and let her seed possess the gate of those who hate them. (Genesis 26:40).

Low carb recipe sharing?

Current giveaway: Grandpa Jake's Campfire Cooker

Hubby and I are cutting our carbs and rather than sift through the countless sites with countless recipes, I’d like to ask for your favorite recipes here.
Who has a favorite, tried-and-true low carb recipe to share? Extra points if it’s easy, inexpensive, and serves 10-12!
Post away and leave a link. We may as well put Mr. Linky to work, right?
Who’s sharing? Link up, with my thanks and hubby’s gratitude.
Bon appetite!

Frugal Friday: shopping tip

frugal Frugal Friday: shopping tip
When I’m checking out at the grocery store I try to watch the price as each item is scanned. We all know that occasionally an item will ring up for the wrong price and it’s well worth the time to speak up. The extra 30 seconds at checkout might save 50 cents. Do the math: that’s $60/hour for speaking up.

But sometimes it’s just not practical to watch every item. I might be busy loading 2 carts full of groceries onto the conveyor belt as the clerk begins, or I might be wrangling little ones – I rarely shop alone, but I often don’t have all my big helpers with me.
And because I’m not alone and I probably have a lot of highly perishable groceries, I really don’t want to find the mistake after I’ve taken the kids and groceries out to the van.

So here’s my tip: As I load the groceries onto the conveyor belt, I try to group the items most likely to ring up wrong: clearance and sale items. By setting those items together on the conveyor belt, I know exactly when to give the prices my undivided attention and I find that I am very likely to catch all the mistakes this way.

This efficient use of all my available brain cells saves me both time and money…and brain cells – and we need all we can get, right?

What does a family with 14 children look like?

What does a family with 14 children look like?
Until Mother’s Day, our family had never had a photo of all 14 of us together. With a sister married and settled in Tennessee and 2 brothers working offshore on different 2 or 3 week shifts, we were beginning to doubt that it would ever happen.
It happened.
Here it is, preserved for posterity.

NEW! Carnival of Modesty

Current giveaway: Grandpa Jake's Campfire Cooker

I hope Rebecca will forgive the plagiarism, but it’s for a good cause and I’ve already spent too much time online to write my own post this time:

Highlighting those that are modest in dress, the inaugural edition of the new, monthly Carnival of Modesty, organized by MInTheGap, will be published July 13th at The Space Between My Peers! Everyone with something to say about in the categories What is Modest, Modest Resources, or My Story is invited to participate.

This Carnival is for posts that talk about modesty in daily living. We want to highlight those that give good resources and promote the discussion of modesty in the current culture.

Submit your Carnival of Modesty article to blogcarnival by July 6th.

Chocolate and coffee confessions

Current giveaway: Grandpa Jake's Campfire Cooker

Deep breath.
I quit. Aside from an occasional weak “latte” (1/4 cup of coffee with 3/4 cup of milk, nice and hot) I have almost entirely given up coffee due to atrial flutter or something very much like it. I was very slow to blame the caffeine, but after less than a week without coffee I was 99% better so I’m struggling to stay away from the stuff.
All I can say is that I’m glad coffee doesn’t taste as good as the fresh ground beans smell. I’d never be able to give it up.
I’ll also mention that I now get an extra little thrill out of kissing hubby in the morning, with his coffee breath. mmmm. He tastes and smells better than ever. icon wink Chocolate and coffee confessions

But chocolate…no worries. With all that coffee out of my diet, I have plenty of room for the tiny bit of caffeine provided by good dark chocolate. And with my blood pressure down to 90/50, I need that little boost. moz screenshot Chocolate and coffee confessions
“You’re just nice and relaxed,” said the dental hygienist after she took my blood pressure. “ummm…yeah,” thought I. “must….have….caffeine…”lindt Chocolate and coffee confessions

Hubby has recently treated me to several bars of Excellence 85% Dark Chocolate by Lindt. It has just enough sweetness and plenty of dark rich chocolatiness. (What? You think that’s not a word? It is now. I just added it to the spell checker.)
It’s even low carb: a teeny tiny 12 carbs in the entire bar, but just one of the 10 big squares has enough chocolate to satisfy a craving.
Which fits very nicely into my upcoming post in which I will be asking for your favorite low carb recipes. Get ready.

Just a thought

Current giveaway: Grandpa Jake's Campfire Cooker

A few random facts:

  • Most of our children are 19 months apart.
  • Our biggest gap (not counting the one surrounding our stillborn daughter) is 23 months.
  • Our last five children were: 5 days late; on time; 8 days late; 3 days late; and 8 days late.
  • On average, rounded to the nearest day, our last 5 children were 5 days late.

If I were to get pregnant this month, The Boy would be 21 months old when the baby is born. My due date would be 5 days before Hubby’s next birthday.
Not that I am pregnant, mind you. As far as I know. It’s just a thought.
