A low–caffeine way to start the day
We call this a latte, though I’m sure it’s not at all authentic. Is is good, however, fulfills my psychological need to sip something warm and coffee-ish in the morning, and doesn’t pack the caffeine punch of a full cup of coffee. And it makes me happy. Not surprising since it contains #1, #2 and #6 of the top 11 Mood-Lifting Foods. (HT to Lifehacker for the link)
Mom’s Morning Latte
Combine 1/4-1/3 cup of black coffee and 1-2 tsp. chocolate syrup. Fill to top with milk, and heat until it’s so hot you can barely sip it. Grab your Bible and enjoy some early morning quiet caffeine time.
Now if I could just bring myself to eat a Broccoli/Rice Mackerel casserole for breakfast, I’d be the happiest gal around. NOT.
But the latte works for me.

Has my husband been cooking breakfast for you? LOL
When we were dating, my husband tried to woo me with a hotdog/rice/rosemary casserole.
I married him so he wouldn’t starve to death. LOL
This sounds so yummy! I will definitely give it a try.
Thanks!
Kim,
I really enjoyed your princess bride post!It is one of my favorite movies of all time!
I was wondering if you ever tried any of the coffee flavored chocolate or the different breakfast breads that you make homemade that have coffee in them. That works for me when I need a kick. Though…if its a drink your craving, that doesn’t help.

Hubby often brings me coffee flavored chocolate and it’s delightful, but as you said it just can’t take the place of a warm cuppa something in the morning.
Kim, the latte’-wannabe sound delightful, and I am not even a coffee drinker! But mercy, where did that broccoli/rice/mackerel recipe come from??
I remember way back when (we have been married 42 years in November) during a very difficult time financially, we bought mackerel for 17 cents a can, and it was our protein for a while. Ugh! The smell of the liquid from the can would NOT come out if it got on a towel or something. It did end up being palatable done like fried salmon patties.
I am thankful for God’s provision for the time, but soooo thankful we can afford something else now! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
I’m a coffee purist myself - straight Starbucks! Well…except for the half & half and 2 or 3 spoonfulls of sugar. Hey - I usually skip dessert!
Bonnie,
The casserole is the rest of the top 6 mood-lifting foods. I think I’ll stick with 3 out of 6; how about you?
Stacy,
I love, love, LOVE coffee. But caffeine does bad things to my heart and I get hooked too quickly: then the migraines set in if I miss my morning fix. So I have to fake it as well as I can.
This is a great tip, and it sounds yummy!
Thanks for sharing!
Doesn’t the chocolate syrup contribute caffeine of some sort?
Just curious…
sallie,
The caffeine in most chocolate is so small that it doesn’t compare to a cup of coffee.
Chocolate covered coffee beans, on the other hand, make my heart go pitter-pat.
