Every now and again I come across a product or 2 that makes me stand up and say, “WOW! I really have to have that.” From audio cds to books, there are available to the Christian today an incredible array of teaching tools, entertainment options, and reference materials.

Some are incredible deals, some essential worldview training tools. From time to time I feel like I just HAVE to tell folks about some of our favorites.

I talked about the Gunn Brothers films in the past but this one bears repeating, especially in light of its winning Best of Festival at the 2007 SAICFF. It’s the “Monstrous Regiment” DVD.

Colin, Emily and Euan Gunn have put together a clear, stark and honest look at feminism and its effects on the modern world.

If you don’t have this video you must buy it. In fact buy 2 or three so you can give them away – it’s that good.

I am a father of 8: seven daughters and one son, ages 14 to 1. I consider this film one of the must-have worldview training videos in our family library. I have had all my daughters watch it. Morning sickness has been on my mind lately – or more accurately, the lack of morning sickness.

I have had only the barest hint of nausea. It comes and goes almost without my notice. This is not at all typical for me – I’ve had 2 pregnancies with minor nausea. One brought forth a boy and one a girl. I’ve had 7 pregnancies with rather severe vomiting that lasted for many months. All brought forth girls.

And I have had 2 pregnancies with nearly no nausea at all. Both ended in early miscarriages.

Are you worried yet?

I’m not. I am giving thanks that I feel so well! I thought briefly about being worried, and wondered if I would feel guilty for having been thankful when I should have been concerned, but then I remembered that we are commanded to:

pray without ceasing and give thanks in all things… [I Thes. 5:16-18]

to be content in all circumstances…[Phil. 4:12]

to take evil at the hand of the LORD along with the good. [Job 2:10]

And so I am rejoicing in my health, praying always for the health of our baby, and am resolved to rejoice in nausea if and when that comes as well. And if it’s God’s will to take this baby before we meet him or her? I’ll rejoice in that too, knowing that we’ll just have to wait a bit longer to meet.

I know that not all Christians agree, but I wholeheartedly believe that the public school system is no place for a Christian child.

In California, the case has become even stronger. SB 777 has passed the California State Senate and was signed into law. This law, strongly supported by the California Teacher’s Association and the PTA, has a myriad of effects that should horrify any Christian parent who has children in the public school system:

  • Textbooks, instructional materials and school-sponsored activities must positively portray cross-dressing, sex-change operations, homosexual ‘marriages’ and all aspects of homosexuality and bisexuality, including so-called ‘gay history.’ Silence on the topics will not be allowed.
  • A person’s gender has been redefined to personal preferance, and not dependent upon the person’s “assigned sex” at birth.
  • Words such as “mom” and “dad” and “husband” and “wife” would have to be edited from all texts.
  • Cheerleading and sports teams would have to be gender-neutral.
  • Prom kings and queens would be banned, or if featured, would have to be gender neutral so that the king could be female and the queen male.
  • Gender-neutral bathrooms could be required for those confused about their gender identity.
  • A male who believes he really is female would be allowed into the women’s restroom, and a woman believing herself a male would be allowed into a men’s room.
  • Even scientific information, such has statistics showing AIDS rates in the homosexual community or statistics relating to births or deaths among various cultural groups, could be banned.

Do you think this doesn’t affect you or your children because you don’t live in California?

Think again. California is the largest purchaser of textbooks in the nation. New editions of textbooks will likely be edited by publishers to meet the new requirements in California.

Even if your child is in a public school in the conservative midwest or in the South, this is going to affect your child and your family.

Please, think about it.

More attacks upon the family and Christianity signed by Gov. Schwarzenegger in recent weeks:

  • AB394 creates the circumstances where a parent who says marriage is only for a man and a woman in the presence of a lesbian teacher could be convicted of “harassment,” and a student who believes people are born either male or female could be reported as a “harasser” by a male teacher who wears women’s clothes.
  • AB14 prohibits state funding for any program that does not support a range of alternative sexual practices, including state-funded social services run by churches. This opens up nonprofit organizations to lawsuits if they exclude members that engage in homosexual, bisexual, or transsexual conduct.
  • The governor with his signature also ordered public schools to allow boys to use girls restrooms and locker rooms, and vice versa.

For me, the best part of the film festival each year is seeing old friends and making new ones; greeting familiar faces even if I don’t quite remember the names; and meeting people in real life after knowing them online. I guess it’s a little like an extended family reunion – a big one, where the in-laws of your mother’s third cousins attend and you’re all family even if you’ve never been properly introduced.

Out of an estimated 1,200 attendees, I think I knew roughly 25% – not bad for a quiet sort of girl like myself. icon smile Film Festival recap (Moms highlights) It was such a wonderful feeling to see old friends and new friends around every corner!

This year I was privileged to finally meet Crystal (along with her husband and children), Jennie Chancey who was great with child and always seemed to have a different selection of little ones with her, and Lydia Hayden with her sweet mother.

I ran into Colin and Emily Gunn, who had a bit of their own excitement this weekend. The Gunn Brothers’ Monstrous Regiment of Women was this year’s Jubilee Award winner at the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival! (Check out free trailers and clips here and then go tell Emily congrats!)

We listened to Ray Comfort speak and spent the ride home alternately repeating his punchlines (“I’m going to close with this thought…[long pause]… This is stupid! You don’t have a clue what I’m thinking. I’m going to say it out loud.”) and excitedly discussing his program (see free episodes here), his website (The Way of the Master), and his message. The man is on fire for God and left us feeling the same way, even while we laughed at and with him, especially the part where he really was on fire.

We watched the world premier of Return of the Daughters, and I went from nodding in somber agreement to grinning like an idiot when I saw hubby and Kait appear in footage from the 2007 Father Daughter Retreat.

In other news, I was one of the bouncers tonight, standing in the hall with crossed arms and a purposeful look, keeping curious onlookers out of the main theater during sound tests and rehearsals before the award ceremony. I found that it was far easier to stop people when I didn’t
have a baby on my hip. There’s something utterly non-threatening about a woman bouncing a baby on her hip.

Then again, the baby on the hip seemed to be working for Hubby in the other hall. I guess that’s why bouncers are typically men.

We’ll all be at the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival on Friday and Saturday, in and out of the Vision Forum booth. Hubby will be there tonight with our 2 oldest children, snapping photos like a madman.

Our very favorite storyteller George Sarris is debuting a new act tonight, and hubby is there with our two oldest children watching. Oh, how I hate to miss it! 6yo Becca came pounding on my bedroom door at 2:45 this morning. I heard her sobbing, groggy voice: “Mom, I have to go potty really bad and there’s something scary by the light. It looks like a… crab.”

I crawled out of bed to rescue her from a scary crab. Thinking I would probably find a big spider next to the light switch, I hesitated and then grabbed the empty paper tower holder. I used it to flip on the switch, and what did I see?

No, not our lost tarantula. Just a hair blower, brought out of hiding now that the weather has turned colder. It was dangling near the light switch, surrounded by loops of its own cord. If I were 6yo, reaching for a light switch in the dead of night, I would have been scared too. Actually, I was. Remember the part about the paper towel holder?

Ok I can’t keep this to myself this anymore. I have to tell somebody or it’s going to kill me.

How to move from Blogger to WordPress, part 1

If you want to move your current blog from Blogger to WordPress, maybe we can help. We just brought over and merged 6 complete and separate blogs, and we learned a lot along the way.

You’ll need to decide if you can be happy with a free blog hosted at WordPress.com. Keeping it at WordPress is very easy and you will have some nice features, but you also sacrifice some flexibility.

If you’re not terrified by all things technical, I highly recommend you try out the self-hosting option (***Whip An Orbit, below***). But if you are planning to copy your Blogger posts over to your new WordPress blog, you’ll want to start here anyway. Due to a bug in the importation process, the easiest way to make the move is in 2 hops.

So no matter where you want to end up, start here:

  1. Go to WordPress.com and sign up for a new account. Don’t panic. It’s fast, free and easy. Make sure you check the “gimme a blog” button near the bottom.
  2. On the next screen, you’ll choose a name and address for your blog. Unless you’re happy with the boring default one they put in the blank. Don’t do that, please.
  3. Here’s what you see after just 2 screens. The process couldn’t possibly be faster or easier.

    4. You are now logged in as [your user name].
    An email with your username, password, Akismet API key and important links has been sent to your email address.
    Write a post [link], change your template [link] or visit the homepage [link].

    We hope you enjoy WordPress.com.

  4. Still with me? Save that email, but you don’t need it yet. Click the change your template link, and pick something pretty with the click of a button. You might want to take note of whether the template you chose allows a customized header and whether you can edit the css. Then again, you might not care. There’s no commitment here – you can change again at a moment’s notice.
  5. At this point, you might want to explore your options, especially if you plan on staying right there at WordPress.com. Take a few minutes to click all the choices at the top, and just read everything. Don’t be afraid to make changes. Unless you click the big scary Delete Blog Permanently button, you’re not going to hurt anything.
  6. Remember to delete the silly “Hello World” post. Go to Manage: Posts to do that. Now go to Write: Posts and write something original, for goodness sake. Take a look at the options while you’re there, and hit the Publish button when you’re done, and you’re off!

Next I’ll tell you how to copy all your Blogger posts over to your new WordPress.com blog. Don’t worry. It’s easy.

Remember, even if you’re going to move to your own self-hosted WordPress blog, you might need to move your posts to a free WordPress blog first, so pay attention. I’ll explain why and how.
