Our poor sick Mother and what we’re doing about it.

Lately our Mom has been pretty miserable with morning sickness, so we four oldest are going to run the house so she can take the next 2-3 days to a month off if need be.

Kittykait has come up with a useful system for splitting up the workload involving points on a scale of 1-10 to help it stay more or less even:

Taking care of the Boy is 7 pts,

Doing laundry (keeping it running and folding/sorting) is 10 pts,

General house maintenance is 7 pts,

Keeping up with the dishes is 8 pts,

Taking out the trash is 2  pts,

Taking care of Mom (waiting on her hand and foot, bringing her food and drink, stuff like that) is 3 pts.

then we add up the points and divide by the number of people there are (adding or taking away points depending on age so the six yo doesn’t get the same amount of work as the fourteen yo)  and then we give people jobs off of the list until they have jobs whose points add up to their quota.  Pretty good huh? “Fun” jobs like cooking will have to be agreed on Lydia did sausage balls for breakfast and it looks like the Megan is going to do lunch and Kittykait and I will do dinner together.

I have to admit, cooking was always *my* favourite too :)

  2. Wow! You girls are extremely clever! Not to mention a real blessing right now to your mom.

  3. Does keeping the blog going for her get any points??? It should. Send her our best, we hope she feels better soon. Looks like she is raising you girls right.

  4. Very impressive! Your mom is a special lady. She is raising special girls.

  5. Wow, your mom is so lucky! Don’t forget to make sure all the spiders are taken care of and if your mom feels like it be sure to give her the daily chocolate! :)

  6. I was wondering the same thing, if blog posting gets points or if it’s one of the fun jobs. :-) Hope your mom feels better soon.

  7. You girls are a special blessing on your mom.

  8. Good for you girls!

  9. She might never get out of bed! LOL

  10. That’s a great way to help!

  11. way to go! You are growing up to be fine young ladies. My own children did something very similar for me when we were expecting our most recent boy. God Bless you all for honoring your mother in this way! :)

  12. Has your mom tried taking ginger? Whenever I began to feel queasy, I took a couple capsules of ginger. I was never “sick” last pregnancy.

I pray that when my daughters are older, they will be a blessing to others like you are!

  13. You are all so wonderful for taking care of your sweet mom like that! I know that she is thanking the Lord for your helpful attitudes and caring hearts!

  14. My children are still too young to have been much help to me during my recent bout with morning sickness. But I pray that my husband and I raise them to be so compassionate as you girls are being to your mother! Way to go girls. To God be the Glory!!

  15. Wow, can I just say how impressed I am with all of you girls? What a true blessing! I am 32 weeks pregnant and am chasing around my daughter, 15 months, and I can’t imagine how wonderful it would be to have that kind of help!

  16. I’m sure your mom is SO very thankful to have such helpful girls! What a blessing you all must be! Your are definitely Godly young women in training!!!! May God bless your whole family!!

  17. What good girls! What blessings.

  18. That sounds like a great plan.

I only have two daughters, though… wanna come to New York to help me when your Mom is feeling better?

    :D

  19. What a blessing you are to your mother. My girls were wonderful when my morning sickness was out of control and I will never forget it! I’m cheering on the sidelines like crazy!

  20. Wow, you guys sure have been busy concocting a plan! (And such smart young ladies…incorporating a math lesson into figuring out how to help your mom. Great way to still squeeze school in!)

Hmmm…the Boy must be pretty much a handful these days if taking care of him is almost worth as many points as keeping the laundry for 10 people going! ;)

  21. Truly, what a blessing you all are! What a clever idea using the point system. I pray the Lord will just bless you children, and that your mommy will be back on her feet very soon! I have been so blessed reading this post. Thank you for sharing!

  22. You girls are such a wonderful blessing to your mom!
I hope when my kiddos get older, they can learn from your example!!

  23. How sweet, Train up a child in the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it. You have a special mom, sounds like there will be some special girls because of it. I know your mom is grateful indeed.
    Great job girls!

  24. My children, especially my oldest daughter, Victoria, is looking for a way to balance out chores and get more done. I’m sure she’ll find this idea very interesting!

  25. Go girls! How awesome! What an excellent example to set for other girls! I’m very impressed with you all. May God bless you richly.

  26. Hi Girls! I read you guys’ blog, but don’t comment much… However, I wanted to say that’s a terrific idea- and I’m sure, a huge help to your Mom! It’s great that she can rest and not worry about everything getting done. My Mom deals with pretty bad bouts of morning sickness too (I’m the oldest in our family), so we take over for her, too….. It can be a lot of fun- and it’s certainly good practice for when we have our own families!

    Blessings,
    ~Brianna

  30. Good luck to you girls and your mother in the future. Sounds like you all have everything under control. I know you are a really big help to your mom. Besides, it just makes you feel so good to help one another and work together. Here in our home that’s the only way we can accomplish our daily routine. We are a family of 8 and really enjoy your blog.

  35. You are all giving your mom a wonderful testimony for years and years to come. When I had my 7th baby, my older children ran my house for me for 6 full weeks, cleaning, cooking and doing everything! All I did was nurse my baby and rest. When women in the store asked me how I could possible handle all those children, I would tell them about my dear children and how they cared for me and my household. Every woman learned the glory of godly children who learned to serve and who blessed their mother. Children are a blessing, and you are giving your mother the ammunition she can use to share this truth with a world who views children as nuisances. May God bless you all richly!
