This could be dangerous
Posted on November 15th, 2007 by kimc
I realized yesterday that if I can force myself to eat something as soon as I feel sick, even if I just ate 15 minutes ago and the very thought of food makes me feel even worse, I will feel better.
So after days of #6-#10 on my Nausea Scale, I spent all day yesterday cramming more and more food down my throat, precariously balanced between #3 and #5.
I’m really torn as to whether this is good news or bad. I’m going to think it over while I have a bite to eat.

That sounds like a good idea to me! If that worked for me, I would totally do it. But, when I’m pregnant and sick, I literally CANNOT eat anything and end up dehydrated and in the ER. It is disgusting because just a little food and water can keep that at bay but even a little will send me to the bathroom. A vicious circle I can’t break. Glad you found a way to break the cycle. Keep up the eating! And I hope you feel better soon! (watermelon is great when dealing with morning sickness… if you haven’t found that out yet.)
I find that this works, a little, for me. I just get so sick and tired of eating. By the time it gets to lunch, I can’t do it anymore and get more and more sick until dinner. I usually gain weight first and second trimester, but no weight during the third. I am 18 weeks into my 9th pregnancy and just beginning to get over the morning sickness. It is certainly worth it, but it is never easy.
Blessings,
Kimberly, mommy to 8, 1yr.-11yrs.
Whatever works! If it lessens the misery, I’d do about anything!
So you gain 5 pounds in your first trimester instead of 0….I don’t think this will kill you, unless of course the thing you must eat every 15 minutes is ALWAYS chocolate….that’s not the case is it? (Seems like a reasonable question considering the % of posts praising the product of the cacao tree on this blog…)
I found this to be true for me, too, a few pregnancies ago. I just kind of grazed all day - only eating little bits at a time, not ever a really big meal. This helped a lot! I didn’t gain extra weight doing this - in fact, I gained less weight the last few pregnancies than I did with the earlier ones. Hope you’ll feel better soon!

I was so excited to read that you are expecting. I really enjoy your blog. I am 33 weeks pregnant with my 7th and what you are saying was very true for me. Some foods that helped in particular were baked potatos, scrambled eggs (some days I couldn’t do this because of the smell of them cooking), and just plain turkey or ham on one slice of whole wheat bread. Even if it did not “sound” good, once I got it down it always helped. I would even have a “soft drink” some days, and call me crazy, it helped!
You know, this is probably an excellent thing to do. I bet you’ll find that you don’t actually gain any more pregnancy weight than you normally do - as long as it is nutritionally dense food. The Blue Ribbon Baby site actually has a list of great foods to eat. I did this with my last pregnancy - which was #8 AND 9! Yes, it was twins! - and I even gained less weight than usual.
Kim, This is exactly why I always gain around 50(!) pounds (and I’m just 5′1″ - not pretty!) I always make it back to 97 lbs. between pregnancies, though, so I don’t worry too much about it.
Oh, what a great excuse to eat! If I remember correctly, eating also helps pre-adoption jitters
Here’s hoping you’ve found a remedy…my goodness—if something as easy as food can help you, by all means, EAT! You look far too good for a woman who’s had 8 children, anyway!
BTW, I was just thinking today of how funny it is that the general themes of your blog over the years seem to be related to barfing, chocolate, and arachnids. Interesting, to say the least…

Aw–I hope you start feeling better soon.
I’ll tell you, whether pregnant or not, I *always* eat when I feel queezy. Alas, it sticks because I’m no longer throwing up!
I have to tell you-my oldest (4.5 yo) saw the picture of your kids all lined up and is just desperate to have a family that big! “When can we have that many kids in our house? Can I have 15 sisters???”
I did that too with both pregnancy… and kept going for months, gaining 50-60lbs both times… :S Please eat carefully:)
You are not eating emotionally…so eat. You have to do what you can to be as functional as you’re able.
Please do not worry about the weight. It won’t be for long, and it’s nothing that can’t be undone.
Signed,
Gainer and loser of 180 pregnancy pounds over the course of 3 pregnancies…o.k….gainer of 180, loser of about 150.
Enjoying your blog. Congrats on the baby!
