Treasure hunt
Today Perry took several children to work and I am once again lounging about in bed, thinking anti-vomiting thoughts.
9yo Megan has revived an idea for entertaining the younger ones: treaure hunts! One idea that worked especially well was the hunt for 3yo Rachael, who doesn’t read a bit.
Instead of hiding written or drawn clues, Megan hid ordinary household items in the wrong place. Each out-of-place item was a clue in itself, and putting it in its proper place led to the next out-of-place item. A blanket on the floor led to a can of evaporated milk in the blanket chest. When she put away the evaporated milk, she found a hair bow in the pantry. In the hair bow basket, she spotted something else out of place.
Games like this just warm a mother’s heart, don’t they? Megan is thinking, planning and plotting, evaluating the difficulty of each clue and putting them together in a sequence that doesn’t unintentionally bring the searcher too close to other clues at the wrong time.
The little searcher is learning to recognize items out of place and (be still my beating heart!) to put them away. Logic, critical thinking, attention to detail, and housekeeping lessons all wrapped into one.
I love homeschooling.

That is so awesome. I love when my kids create ways to entertain themselves. Even better when they start homeschooling their younger siblings.
Everyday I discover the wonders of homeschooling. My children are in kindergarten right now, the last year of it but I am sure I will homeschool them next year instead of sending them to elementary school.
We live in Mexico, so the resources in Spanish for homeschooling here are nule since there is not such thing as homeschooling.
That is really awesome. Isn’t it great how everything we do in everyday life can count as school?
That sounds like a game I would love to play! You have such creative kiddos
I will keep this idea in my mind… perhaps we will start a game of it tomorrow! Thanks for sharing!
how wonderful! also truly inspiring for other homeschooling moms like moi
That is too good! Mind if we use your magnificent game idea? I know all of ours would have a blast.
Woooooo!! Congratulations!
Great idea, Megan! How wonderful to see you caring for both your mother and your little sister. What a kind thing to do.
My Brittany (11) reads this blog. I wonder if she’ll come across this great idea?
