Dictionary

Stacie asked about the game Dictionary.  I was really hoping somebody would ask!

The more players you have, the more fun the game will be. There are many variations on the rules, but here’s how we played:

  1. Get a dictionary.  Obviously.
  2. Each player will need several small scraps of paper and a pencil or pen.
  3. The first player flips through the dictionary and chooses an obscure word.  He should ask to be sure that none of the players knows the real definition of the word.
  4. Each player makes up a plausible definition for the word, writes his name on his scrap of paper, and hands it to the player with the dictionary.
  5. The player with the dictionary copies the real definition from the dictionary onto his own scrap of paper. He doesn’t need to copy the entire definition (esp. if there’s more than one meaning) and he is allowed to…ahem…dumb it down a bit.
  6. When all are ready, the first player shuffles the definitions and reads them aloud.  Hopefully, he already read each one silently as it was handed to him so he won’t stumble over unfamiliar words or sloppy handwriting.  Try to resist the urge to giggle madly when your own definition is read aloud.
  7. Now the fun begins! Each player casts a vote for the definition that he thinks came from the dictionary.
  8. Tally up the score for the round and pass the dictionary to the left.  When everyone has had a turn with the dictionary, the game is over.

Scoring:

You score one point for each vote received by your phony definition.

You score one point if you manage to vote for the real definition.

The player with the dictionary scores nothing unless he manages to fool the entire group.  If nobody at all voted for the real definition, he scores one point for each person he fooled.

  1. That game can be purchased at stores… it is called Balderdash. For $15-20 you can play the same thing with a gameboard, game cards, dice, and colorful little plastic pieces. You wouldn’t actually want the kids to think they’re learning do you? LOL!

  2. I love this. I’ve only played it as Balderdash, but the rules are pretty much the same. You’re so right about not giggling while saying the definitions - that is hard!

  3. I love Balderdash…the kids would love your version! But…then there’s that pesky thing about them *knowing* that they are actually *learning*…now how do I get around that one?! : )

    Hugs,
    Carmen

  4. This sounds like fun…I think we will give it a try.

  5. We LOVE playing Dictionary! Who knew learning could be so much fun?!

  6. We played a modified version. BIG FUN!
