Family Culture Quotes
Though I’ve meant to do this for quite a while, Cindy beat me to it. Now I’m doing it.
The following is small selection of quotes that are frequently heard around our house. Most are from movies; often from movies that left our collection long ago but their influence lives on in our minds, for better or worse. Some are from movies the children have never seen, but they have learned the quotes from us old folks.
How many sources can you name for these quotes?
If you post a list of your own, please leave a link in the comments!

I know the ones from Veggie Tales, The Princess Bride, Winnie the Pooh, Matilda…and there are some that I’ve heard but just can’t place, so I’m hoping you post the answers.
“The stick to beat the lovely lady” is from The Quiet Man.
I recognize quite a few of these but can’t place where I know some of them from. Toy Story, Winnie the Pooh, A Christmas Story, Spongebob Squarepants … those are the ones I know for sure. We say a few of these quotes around our house, too.
BTW, I got the parcel with my Vision Forum prizes - thank you SO much!!!
Blessings ~ Diane
“If it is a good morning, which I doubt.” Winnie the Pooh!
“I do not think that means what you think it means.” Obviously Princess Bride.
“Life is pain, Princess Highness.” Bug’s Life or Princess Bride, I’m not sure which.
For-e-ver!
[long and drawn out, in response to the 9th time I am asked, “How long until we ___?”]
“You are a sad, strange little man.” Toy Story!
“Mine? mine? mine, mine, mine?” Those wonderful seagulls in…I don’t remember which movie! Sadness.
“You threw off my groove!” - The Emperor’s New Groove. I just watched this movie Saturday!!
* “Oh, bother.” - Winnie the Pooh!
* “Inconceivable!” Princess Bride.
If you were able to post the answers at some point that would be greatly appreciated!
Hmmm,
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Incredibles, Winnie the Pooh, The Princess Bride, My Fair Lady, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Emperor’s New Groove, The Quiet Man. Glad to see that other people have these quotes going too! (You mean we’re not the only ones prone to breaking into song or movie quoting mode?)
You all are doing great! I’ll post sources after a few days, but I don’t want to spoil the fun too soon. There are several that haven’t been named yet. As I said, not all are movies that we would watch these days, but maybe some of you have seen them in your less discerning days…
What About Bob, Back to the Future, and Cinderella are the ones I’m picking out, besides those already mentioned.
Is the stick comment from The Quiet Man? I love that movie!
If- Cinderella
I’m not happy Bob- The Incredibles
Mine? Finding Nemo
Several from A Christmas Story
Think McFly -Back to the Future
Most of the ones I knew, others already posted. Is the Dive one from Throw Momma From the Train? Wierd movie….;)
“I’m a girl girl, I am.” is from My Fair Lady. We love this musical and my husband actually owned this before I married him!
I’m not happy, Bob. Not happy. -Incredibles
I do not think that means what you think it means. -Princess Bride
Life is pain, Princess Highness. -Princess Bride
Mine? mine? mine, mine, mine? -Finding Nemo
Bob?! Gone?! He’s never gone! -Incredibles
You threw off my groove! -Emperor’s New Groove?
You’ll shoot your eye out. -A Christmas Story
Frag-geeee-leee. Must be Italian. -A Christmas Story
He’ll regret it to his dying day, if ever he lives that long. -AHHHHH! I can’t remember this one but I *know* I’ve seen the movie it’s in! Is it Princess Bride?
Oh, bother. -Winnie the Pooh
Inconceivable! -Princess Bride
haha. That was fun. I’m always quoting random movies…and when I’m not doing that I’m singing random songs! I know I’ve seen most of the movies that you have quoted, I just don’t know the movies well enough to place them. My favorite movies to quote are High school Musical (1 & 2), National Treasure, Princess Bride, Madagascar, Nemo, etc.
I’m seeing:
What About Bob
Toy Story
Elf
Back to the Future
Princess Bride
Emperor’s New Groove (?)
My Fair Lady (but when we’re quoting it, we say, “I’m a good girl, I yam!”)
A Christmas Story
Finding Nemo
and was there a touch of Monty Python in there??
Are you going to post the answers??? There are a few that are driving me nuts: I know I know them but my brain-o’s not pulling ‘em up!
I recognize a few (”For-ev-er” and “Your’re killing me, Smalls” from Sandlot. That’s one of my boys’ all-time favorite movies (I admit it, mine too)!
If anyone hasn’t seen it, I’d recommend it. I’ve probably seen it 15 or 20 times and the ending still makes me tear up a bit (in a good way).
Ha! I had to laugh because some are so obvious (to me! Like Princess Bride), some I guessed from the literature (like Winnie Pooh) and others were so familiar but because I have not seen them in English, I did not get it until someone remarked on it (Finding Nemo “mine, mine, mine”…).
So, here is one for you:
Food, glorious Food! [sung]
Do you need a hug? Elf
He’s an angry elf? Elf
Karen,
Great job, but nix on the Monty Python - as far as I’m aware. Maybe it has leached into our family culture through subversive methods…
Andrea,
The kids are guessing Ice Age 2 for the food line, sung by vultures.
Lisa,
I was waiting for someone to name Sandlot. It’s a longtime favorite in our house, though our own copy was VHS and has long since departed.
Good one, Andrea (plus you have my name, so that’s good too!)
“Food, glorious food!” is from Oliver!, which is one of my favorite musicals.
So just to sum up…

Our favorite quote ’round these parts is: “Meatloaf, smeetloaf, double beetloaf. I hate meatloaf!” We usually say this to our children when they complain about dinner.
Can you fill in the blanks on the ones we haven’t gotten?
We do this so much, too! But not having grown up on movies we did it with books. Yesterday one of my young lads was heard saying to another who was not wanting to go to school, ” Yes, you have to go chew your slate pencil.” From “Heidi” said by the grandfather.
LLLLLOOOOOLLLLLL!!!
Funny! Yes, I know some of these phrases all TOO well.. we use many of the same. We frequently use the “I’m not happy, Bob.”
Great post. You ought to make it a meme!
Well, half points for Ice Age 2, they STOLE it from elsewhere… so bonus if you get that!
* Oh, bonus goes to Andy-Joy! Great musical!
“I shall scream!”
I forgot to mention:
No more rhyming, I mean it!
Anyone want a peanut!
They even say that in German:
Kein Reim mehr, jetzt ist Schluss.
Will jemand eine Erdnuss?
And:
Look at the Tomato, isn’t he a sad Tomato?
My kids *love* the “I’m not happy, Bob. NOT happy!” phrase and use it a TON.
Andrea,
The “no more rhyming” one is from the Princess Bride. How cool that they rhyme it in German, too!
The sad tomato quote is from a Silly Song sung by Larry the cucumber, the Dance of the Cucumber, but I can’t remember which Veggie Tale movie it’s from.
Amy
Andrea,
“Food, glorious Food!”
Sounds an awful lot like Alphie Doolittle one of the most “original moralists in England” as it were when he sings
“Beer glorious beer!” in “My Fair Lady”
Oh, another one with food:
Ohhh! Eat something!
(for us this is an adult only movie, funny, yet with one or two questionable parts… so the kids have it from us)
I was able to guess just a couple, I am not that good to memorize movies lines XD But it was funny to read. Thank you for sharing.
Okay…………here it goes……………*cracks knuckles*

One our family uses frequently at the table:
“These mashed potatoes are sooooo creamy!”
(when something- anything - at the meal is texturally pleasing)
Be careful with the little angel!
[don’t squish the poor creature]
This is definitely from Lilo and Stitch!
