A cure for morning sickness?

Amy found this theory concerning a common cause of morning sickness and a simple cure.  I missed this one when I really needed it, but the theory sure seems to fit my own morning sickness.  I know it’s hormonal, and I do often get a lot of bile.

So the question is, who is pregnant and sick?  Inquiring minds want to know if eating legumes will really cure us!  Please read it, try it out, and report back here.  For the first time in my life, I’m almost sorry my morning sickness ended early in my second trimester.  Almost.  But I’ll be happy to experiment on y’all until my next chance to try the theory.

  1. The next time we are pregnant I am DEFINITELY going to try this!!

  2. Well, I would be a skeptic as I think God made us sick for a reason and really nothing helps for a reason! But since I am not pregnant and beans made me really, really sick, I guess would not be one to say!

  3. Okay, I qualify!

We are 11 weeks pregnant, and sick all day.

Taking a vitamin with MORE vitamin B6 definitely helped, but then again, I could not smell or taste it as it was nicely hidden.

The legumes did not help so much. We have had a few dishes with them in the past couple weeks, and I can tell you there was no clear improvement.

The only thing that seems to help me is getting enough sleep - 18 hours a day ought to do it! :-)

I find that it is hit and miss what works even with in the same pregnancy, let alone across different women! But as much as I want to say this worked for me, alas it did not - but I love chili, so I am willing to try again!

OH a side note, I agree with Martha - I miscarried last year, and I kind of like the constant reminder this time that all is okay!

  4. Well, that certainly explains why I never had morning sickness (maybe). We eat a lot of beans and legumes around here. I don’t always know the difference between science and well-written pseudo-science, actually, so I usually take this stuff with a grain of salt. Still, this sounds reasonable. Congratulations on the coming new addition to your family!

  5. I am 17 weeks pregnant and just now getting relief from my nausea. I still am slightly nauseated, but able to function again. I have been eating beans like a mad woman for months. I ate them because I felt better afterward, not knowing it actually was helping me. I would sit down and eat a whole can of refried beans in the am, and pore a can of kidney beans on a salad at lunch. So there you go, I think it must work somehow.

  6. I didn’t get morning sickness & neither did my mom (she had 8 pregnancies). I always eat lots of legumes (especially lentils) but don’t think that she did/does.

  7. I’m not currently pregnant, but I have been 3 times and had lots of sickness, especially with the 2 girls. The kind of all-day, non-stop unless I’m asleep nausea with vomiting 4-5 times a day while on 2 meds. I can say that nothing cured my sickness except time, but know that I think about it, the only toods that I never threw up were ones with beans in them….burritos, chili, spicy stuff that I was never hungry for but could somehow keep down. With my first daughter, I went for weeks eating bean burritos for lunch and that was pretty much the only nutrition I had! I guess I should have put two and two together and eaten beans all day long! I’ll try that with my next pregnancy.

  8. I cannot thank you enough for posting this link. I am not currently pregnant, but hope to be soon :) I have gotten terrible all day sickness with both of my girls. Funny, like others have said, I did feel better when I ate beans. I used to eat carrots & hummus between meals. I don’ t think I even threw that up. But I never put the two things together. Not to mention that on the site I looked up how to help the gallbladder problems that I have. And apparently I need to eat beans (3 cup/day) for that too. Two birds with one stone, I say. Thank you again.

  9. I am 11 weeks along and I think I am going to try this. This has been the hardest pregnancy yet for me.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

  10. I never tried eating lots of beans for my morning sickness, but the best thing I found to help was taking milk thistle capsules. Milk thistle is supposed to cleanse and support the liver, so the article makes sense to me.

  11. I am so sick right now I can’t even read that article or I’m afraid I’ll throw up. I’ll have to come back to it! I’m 11 weeks. I’ve been craving lemons in my water and I think that helps some. I haven’t even taken my vitamins because I’d just throw them up. But it should end soon…hopefully. My family needs mama back!

  12. I told my Mr. about this theory and he spouted off his own: “With dinner, legumes. At bedtime, le fumes.” Had to share.

  13. I am about 6 wks pregnant right now with my 5th. With the first 2 we lived in TX and I don’t remember eating beans that often and I was deathly sick for 7-8months. We now live in AZ and I haven’t kept track of the amount of beans we eat but I’m sure it has been alot more than in TX.
My mom was telling me about this article she had heard about in prevention magazine that was talking about eating cold beans, potatoes & brown rice can help you lose weight because they are the only foods that can digest in your intestines and take fat with them (From what I gather). After reading the article about morning sickness it all makes perfect sense.
So today after I threw up my orange juice in the kitchen sink I thought even though it doesn’t sound good at all I dug out the only can of beans that I had which happened to be black eye peas. I dumped them in a pan and heated them with some Fiesta brand Fajitas seasoning and shockingly it was really good. I started feeling nauseous again in the afternoon and I ate another can and it did seem to help.
Now I just to to experiment with some different types and prep and see if makes a long term difference.
Thanks so much for this article!!!!

  14. I am 8 weeks pregnant with pretty uncomfortable morning sickness. Today I tried the theory out and I have to say I am impressed–I felt good and had the least amount of nausea in weeks.

My only question is how am I going to avoid the boredom of beans that will set in soon…aslo what if they start sounding disgusting. I will keep trying it….we shall see. Thanks for posting the link.

  15. I, like you, am expecting my 9th baby (I’m due June 3). I eat a relatively high fat diet, and very very rarely have legumes. I have never ever had any morning sickness at all. Except for the 2 times I miscarried, my pregnancies have all been very very easy; no morning sickness, no constipation, no blood pressure problems, no heartburn, no nothing. Even with my twins.

  16. I am 8 weeks pregnant (#5) and never have morning sickness. I eat beans at least twice per week (frugal, healthy, and very yummy in Mexican dishes :-). I don’t know if that’s enough to help, but if so, it does!

  17. Having just come out of my third round of intense morning sickness, I can honestly say I’ve discovered the miracle cure! I wish I had known about this in my first two pregnancies so I could have been spared a lot of vomiting! I took half a pill of Unisom sleeping pill every night at bedtime and it kept most of the nausea away the whole next day until after dinner (just about the time for another pill). Some women find that they need a whole pill, which is still totally safe, but I found it made me really drowsy the next day, and though a whole pill eliminated pretty much ALL of the nausea, it wasn’t worth being such a tired mama so I went back to half pills. My doctor and clinic highly recommend this method. Some women take B6 with a Unisom, but I found B6 to make me feel sicker. Please give this a try as it helped me more than any other remedy under the sun, and believe me, I’ve tried them ALL!

  18. I am 23 weeks pregnant and going back through some morning sickness!!! Guess what I’m going to be eating!!

  19. Not pregnant, but I definately ate more legumes during my last (third) pregnancy and was only slightly nauseated (as opposed to constant barfing with the first pregnancy)

The Unisom/B6 combo I have heard good things about, though never tried it.

  20. This worked for me! I was all sick day every day and it was getting worse each week. All I wanted to eat was carbs, but after I ate them I just felt sicker. I admit that the beans didn’t sound appetizing, but I made myself eat some. I felt better within an hour. I’ve been eating chick peas and hummus and I am 90% better. I can actually function now and feel relatively normal all day. I would recommed trying to eat beans to anyone who has morning sickness!

  21. I am 7 weeks pregnant and eating beans as I type this….I hope it helps, this is my 4th pregnancy and the worst with morning sickness.

  22. I tried this method and it didn’t really work for me :*( but then again, nothing seems to work for ANY length of time — and I think I’ve tried them all. The nausea is just constant. I’m on the Unisom/B6 combo right now and this has helped a little. I’m nearing the half way mark and just now starting to be able to eat and drink a little.
