I love my new vitamins

I just have to thank you all for encouraging me to start taking Supermom Vitamins before my trip to San Diego.  I know I’ve complained about being tired, but I was so tired before my trip that I never would have made it through the last few weeks w/o some great new vitamins!

I didn’t experience any sort of “detox” when I started taking them, and I feel confident that I am absorbing them very well.  How do I know?  Well, remember two readers’ neon pee comments?  :)  Obviously they are making it to my kidneys, which means that they already made it out of my digestive tract and into my bloodstream.  I always see these results within just a couple of hours, which seems like a very good sign.

And as I mentioned, in spite of a brutal schedule over the past several weeks, I have felt surprisingly human.  Maybe this is partly because I actually remember to take the darn things but that seems worth mentioning too.  Either my memory has improved on these vitamins (entirely possible, right?) or they’re just so good that my brain is extraordinarily motivated to keep ‘em coming.

Oh, wait.  Hubby has been handing me the vitamins regularly.  That means he’s extraordinarily motivated.  Maybe he has seen benefits too?

At my next midwife appointment, I’ll be having my iron checked (aaaggghhhhh! needles!).  It was borderline low last time and she tells me that although it really wasn’t bad, borderline is not a good place to be going into labor.  Although the Supermom Vitamins don’t provide a full RDA of iron (60% for adults, and I suspect the RDA for pregnant women is higher, right?) I’m hopeful that they provided enough extra to get my levels up where she wants to see them.  Otherwise she’ll probably want to suck my blood again the following time, and we don’t want that.

  1. I recently started taking the Supermom (plus some extra Spirulina pills) vitamins and I love ‘em! No serious detox stuff over here either.

Also, they aren’t *that* big. That was one of the biggest complaints I read about them. They were like every other prenatal vitamin I have ever taken. No big deal. So don’t let that stop anyone - it’s not as bad as some ladies make it out to be (unless you *seriously* have some swallowing issues).

I’m also hoping they will help with low iron - let us know what your midwife says about that….

  2. Did you know that NOW brand Special Two is the same as Super Mom. A friend told me they were the same and I could not believe they could be because the price is so much cheaper for the NOW. Well, after internet searching and comparing label closely, yes they are exactly the same. Made by the same company for much cheaper then the Super Mom. I get mine at myvitanet.com but if you internet search NOW there are others that sell it. In fact if you google search it alot of others have found them to be the same. Just thought I would let you know because you like to save money. :) I have been taking them for awhile and love them. I have had trouble with other vitamins making my sick to my stomach these do not.

  3. Oh, I love them, too! I was always low-iron for six pgs in a row, but the last two have had me at excellent levels. I also bleed very little after birth (I’m 4 days post partem today), which as you know they get all panicky about with us grand multips. I love Supermom!

  4. I think you need to take a few lessons from my 5-year-old daughter! :) She gets bloodwork done very regularly, (usually every week -because of a blood disorder) and they way she goes hopping and skipping to the lab chair, with a huge smile on her face, you’d think it was the funnest experience in the world! I’ve also had two babies, with the same blood disorder, who would never cry for bloodwork either, as long as the lab technician didn’t have to dig around too much to find the vein.

  5. If your iron doesn’t improve, I will highly recommend you try Floradix iron. It’s the only supplement that is made from herbal and natural sources of iron. It’s the only one that has ever increased my iron level and the only one that didn’t cause me some uncomfortable constipation! I had no problems with it. It’s spendy, but worth every penny in my book when pregnant. I’ve taken it with both of my pregnancies due to borderline anemia and it’s upped my level enough that I was in the normal range.

  6. I LOVE Supermom and mt husband takes Superdad. I have been very happy with all of their products. I am glad to hear they are helping you.

  7. I’m glad the Supermoms are working for you! In this pregnancy I thought I would try the Solgar brand of prenatal vitamins. They are okay but nothing special. Then I found out (via the website) that the ones we get in the UK are only half as potent as the US ones - something to do with European RDAs. Bother!

I would also recommend Floradix for iron, if you need it. I have started taking it in the last week and have really noticed a difference to my energy levels. But I’m hoping you don’t need to.

  8. HI Kim,
If you are low in iron, there is a GREAT product out there by Enzymatic Therapy called Energizing Iron (it USED to be called Liquid Liver Extract - hm, wonder why they changed the name- ugh!) that has really helped me. My iron was always low and got worse wtih my first two pregs. My midwife gave me B-12 shots in the derriere every two weeks - not fun. But, with a good barley green supplement that she suggested (not nasty, just in tablet form) and that iron supplement above, I never had a problem again!!! Thanks for remindeing me with this post - I really need to start taking vitamins again. I have been meaning to buy Supermoms for a while - I will order them today! :)

  9. Kim,

I have been reading and admiring your blog for about a year now! I think its wonderful!

I am 25 years old and the mother of two girls. My husband and I are letting God plan our family; thus, I read your blog for advice and possible insight into what my life may be like in the future;)

I noticed from reading past entries that you have homebirths. Can I ask why? Do you take any medication during labor? Do you use any special techniques that I should know about?:)

    Congrats on baby#9!

    Warmly,
