I finished reading Malachi just a few minutes ago and added a small note at the end:
5/19/08 Finished OT!
Based on my old note just above the new one, I noticed that it has been exactly a year (to the day!) since I finished the OT last time. This tickles me for some incomprehensible reason. Incomprehensible because last time I first read the OT, then the NT. This time I only finished the OT. Translation: it took me an entire year to read only the OT which means that I averaged less than 3 chapters/day even though I read every day. How did this happen? My mathematical brain is stumped.
Now I’m thinking (just thinking, mind you) of trying to finish the NT before the baby arrives in late June/early July. Am I crazy? This would be like the year before last, when the girls and I read 10 chapters/day to finish the NT in less than 30 days. I could do this, but it would be tough. We’ll be in Houston to staff the Vision Forum booth at the homeschool conference in less than 2 weeks, and those are looooong 5 day weekends. 10 chapters/day would be nearly impossible, so I would have to plan for some make-up reading.
Should I go for it anyway?

I wanted to thank you for recommending “Ten P’s in a Pod” on your blog a while back. I’ve since bought the book, read it, and it really prompted us to start feeding ourselves spiritually more often. I’ve found that reading more frequently through the day makes me “hungrier” when we forget.
As a family we’ve made the commitment to read the Bible through each year. The first year, we barely made it. The second year we procrastinated, then had to read 30 minutes + each day to catch up! The funny thing was by the end of several months of half an hour a day, less didn’t feel like “enough”.
This year we are being much more consistant (but still not perfect of course!) and we really like linking the reading to meals – I mean, we always make time to eat! By trying to read 3x a day it usually happens at least once and more often twice BUT we definatly *think* about it more! And our biggie is just forgetting, not lack of time.
Anyways, I don’t have an answer to your question.
I just remembered that I wanted to thank you for recommending that book. It was quite a blessing to us!
How many chapters do you need to read a day if you want to finish reading the Bible in a year? I know, I know- I should stop being lazy and go count them myself! But it sounds like you already know.
Hm…I might take on the NT challenge (not that you were making it a challenge) myself and do it along with you if you decide to. I’ve just been bouncing around lately, and am ready for some concentrated focus. (Is that redundant?)
So the wannabe in me says GO FOR IT!
Heather,
It’s about 3 chapters/day. There are about 900 chapters in the OT and 300 in the NT. I could probably stop being lazy and google for the exact answer, but I’m sure you understand…
Oh, I can so relate. I had planned to read through the whole Bible in a year, but as May fades away, I notice the bookmark in the closed Bible isn’t in the middle, but rather only about 1/4th of the way through. So I think that if I just double my reading amount each day I will be caught up by October, and then when I try to read past three pages, I nod off!
I’ll probably end up in a December read-all-day-and-do-nothing-else marathon.
Go for it!! I read the NT in 2 weeks (back when I first was saved.) Our church has been doing a “listen” to the NT in 40 days, but I didn’t prefer their CD, so used my own. Got through most of it in just a few days – then quit
Back to just reading now – and not on any schedule at the moment.
Are you doing any other VF booths at hs conventions? We will be at CHEC, but not with a booth – anymore
