Jennifer,
I understand your objection, but we rarely kill snakes for that very reason. The main reason we decided to kill this one is because rat snakes, though non-venomous, can be aggressive and deliver a nasty bite - and this was a big one. He was determined to hunt quite near our house, and we have rodents in the house which might have drawn him indoors. I was concerned that our younger children would be in some danger with that particular snake hanging about.

Hi, I wish you had set an example for the kids about wildlife conservation. Here where I live, it is illegal to kill a non-venomous snake. I understand it ate the birds but it's what snakes do, and to understand that would have been a more profound lesson, I think.

Meredith,
When the snake was pinned with the shovel we noticed a suspiciously thick spot. That is were we found the baby birds. Cool huh?

PS My boys are in awe.

These posts on the snake have got to be the vilest blog posts I've seen! A sort of a fascinating dread draws me to look at the pictures. Now I know why my dad, at 57, has an abhorrant dread of snakes. Let's just say that I'm glad the Last Frontier state doesn't have any slithery reptiles.

How cool! I think I'd put the head in a jar and watch it mummify! Or leave it out in a protected place and collect the skull then the ants are finished stripping it. i think the teeth would be neat to look at. Did you examine and scales under the microscope?
