Nesting projects

Just like every other woman on the face of the earth, I feel a need to wrap up household projects before the arrival of a new baby.  Since our house is a work in progress, this presents plenty of options.

Last time, hubby indulged me by mudding, sanding, texturing and painting the ceiling over the dining room and 2 of the 3 bedrooms in our house.

This time, he has already hung the dining room light (hurray for light! double hurray for no more ugly hole in the ceiling!).  We also worked a bit more on the cabinets under the new computer counter: bought and stained a third cabinet and the panels to finish the sides of all 3 cabinets.  I just might fasten them on today.

He also took his big, manly chainsaw out in the woods and made big, manly noises while thinning the brush and undergrowth so that we could actually walk through our woods.  He came back with blood on his legs.  What a man.

I think we’re also hoping to finish up the mud, texture and paint in the bathroom.  There’s just a little bit to do, but it’s messy detail work, and set up and clean up always take as much time as the actual job.

Hubby has mentioned maybe - just maybe - building a roof over part of the deck.  This would be wonderful, because it will give me a shady place to labor in late June/early July.  Last time he rigged up a couple ladders and large blankets in a complicated configuration, but a roof would be so much more classy.

And this is asking a lot, but I would really, really love to extend the kitchen/dining room tile into the living room before the baby arrives.  We already have the tile, so we would just need to buy the plywood to go under.  And we’d have to empty 3 enormous bookshelves for a couple of days.  And move the 2 sofas out.  And measure, cut and screw down the plywood.  And apply floor leveling compound.  And paint the plywood.  And then lay the vinyl tile.

See?  I’m asking a lot, especially since I have a hard time reaching the floor.  But everyone knows how demanding pregnant women can be, right?

  1. I have that same light in my dining room, except with three bulb/shades instead of 5. It’s very pretty (yours, I mean).

  2. Hi Kim,

I started reading your blog about a month ago. I do not have a blog yet. I still cannot figure how old you are. YOu look so young for having eight children. Would you tell me. I have four children only one a girl. We are building a house and just like you said my husband has built it from the ground up . We have been working on it for over a year. In north carolina they will not let you live in it intil it is finished. I cannot wait until it is finished. Thanks so much for letting me comment. I love your blog.

    Thanks,
    April

  3. Nesting already… it is getting close Kim! Yay, I am excited for you and all the “getting ready” it takes for a new baby. Blessings!

  4. Isn’t it funny how the Mommy’s are “nesting” but the Daddy’s are working? Hubby put in a fence, and I even had my Mom and Sister painting rooms in my house before the last baby came! You can only get away with it when extremely pregnant!

  5. Kim,
I just have to say that I have been following your Blog since before The Boy was born. I enjoy reading that every pregnancy is different (I only had 2). I also appreciate the fact that whle you live a life of traditional gender roles, your blog makes it look like you and your husband both weigh in on every stiuation. I appreciate this glimpse into your life. Keep up the good work. God Bless you all.

  6. i wish i could come and give you 24hours of project help! BUT, i live in michigan and the gas… well you get the picture… PLUS I dont know how my 5 extra children than add me to the mix, could actually “help” you! BUT, it could be lots of fun… Strarbucks and choc. need i say more!

  7. [...] Remember this? Well, I was wrong about the tile: we didn’t buy enough to finish the project in the last go-round.  It is only available from Home Depot, and the last time we worked on this project the color we needed had been recently discontinued.  That was Labor Day weekend, and we were just in time to grab the last box on clearance along with enough of another color in the same style to create a new plan.
