10 Things To Try after a visit to the dentist
Posted on July 31st, 2008 by kimc
The right side of my face is numb. You know me - why keep all the fun to myself? I'm sharing my ideas so you'll know what to do next time you need a filling. If you've never had the side of your face anesthetized for a filling, just look at all the fun you're missing. Doesn't it make you want to eat a whole bag of candy right now?
- Apply lipstick or lip balm without a mirror.
- Drink from a cup without a straw.
- Drink from a straw in front of the mirror. First drink from the center of your mouth, then one side, then the other.
- Smile. Widely. In front of a mirror.
- Act normal as you chat with a cashier. Watch him try not to stare at the drooping corner of your mouth.
- Smack yourself in the side of the face. This is not acting normal, but that's OK. Nobody thinks you're normal at this point.
- Forbid the comedians in your family from smacking you. It's only funny if you do it yourself.
- Whistle.
- Try to eat without chewing a hole in your cheek. On second thought, don't try it.
- Take pictures of yourself doing any or all of these stunts.

last time I was numb I actually stuck a closepin on my lip and didn’t feel a thing my kids though tit was sooo funny
I laughed out loud, too!! Hope everything gets back to full feeling soon.
I had Bell’s Palsy during the last 2 weeks (and 2 weeks after) the birth of our 4th child 2 years ago. The left side of my face was completely paralyzed… and yes, numb. You need to add, “try whistling” to that list! Lol.
It was horrifying, but I have a good sense of humor so I made the most of it. I looked absolutely awful, and I’m sure I scared small children and animals during that time, ( I also had to wear an eye patch because I couldn’t blink my eye…) but my favorite joke was that I was certain to not get wrinkles on the left side of my face that way!
Whistling was part of my physical therapy for trying to get the muscles to respond to movement again. The last time I had a filling I had flashbacks to the memory of having half of my face frozen in time!!! Talk about a double anxiety attack… like going to the dentist isn’t bad enough!
Oh, I hate that feeling. And I have a “thick jaw” (nice and feminine, eh?) with lots of extra nerves, so says the dentist, so it takes 6-8 shots of numbing to get me good and pain-free. Unfortunately I have reactions to the epinephrine they put in Novocaine, so I can only have 2 shots of that and then SEVERAL of the less-effective ones. It’s awful. Blech. Yuck.
Glad you can have fun with yours though!
Off to brush.
And floss.
RealEstateMomOf4,
Whistling – great suggestion. I just bumped one of my own off the list to make room for that!
I’m glad your Bell’s Palsy didn’t last too long. I’ve heard of it, sounds awful!
Oh my word! LOL I haven’t had the need for a filling yet in my life. Strange at the age of 38, I know. But I am sure i won’t stay lucky forever, LOL
God Bless,
Michele
