WFMW: ingredient search

Vision Forum Deal of the Day: save 40-90%!

I’m guilty of taking this incredible little tool for granted, but hubby’s surprise at its very existence has renewed my gratitude for the wonders of the internet.

Here’s the problem: I’m a procrastinator.  I often fail to plan ahead for dinner, both in terms of grocery shopping and detailed menu plans.  I sometimes look at the clock and find that it is 5 o’clock, and there’s nothing for dinner but a couple packages of smoked sausage and some zucchini.

Did you see that?  Did you click the link?  What if I’m looking for a new way to use chicken and rice, but we don’t want anything with tomatoes? Just fill in the blanks: what ingredients you do want, and what ingredients you don’t want.

Now, just to make it a little easier, you can also install the Allrecipes Ingredient Search directly into your search bar at the top of your FIrefox window.  If you have no idea what I’m talking about, just close your eyes and hum lalalala until I’m done – but it’s really not hard at all.  Just click here and agree with whatever the little box says.  Then take a peek at your search box at the top of your window and you should see a new and exciting option.

Did your life just get a little easier?  You’re welcome.  It works for me, too.

Wow! I search all recipes all the time! I never thought to use the ingredient search engine to find allergy free recipes (did I mention we have been eating and endless combination of brown rice and chicken for a year now?) for my little one! We use so many strange ingredients, rice and barley flour, exclusively olive oil, egg replacer, xantham gum, and on and on….I actually was able to find some new recipes that were acceptable to our diet restrictions! How cool! Thanks Kim!

    Thank you sooo much!!!

I am going to have to try this. :) It really sounds neat! I have something simular for soap-making that allows me to plug in the oils I have on-hand, so this concept really works in one area for me already.

    Thanks!

I think I take this feature for granted, too. I love it! I also like searching epicurious after coming home from the Farmer’s Market with some odd vegetable that I’d never heard of. :)

    Blessings,
    Michele

I love, love, love Allrecipes. And I love, love, love the ingredient search options…it’s helped me out many times!

But I never thought I was taking it for granted! Oy!

I love AllReicpe!!!! It’s the first thing listed in my cooking bookmark.

  7. BJK adds her thoughts::

I did that this past month when making out my menus for the month. For some reason we did not use three of the meals from last month (and did not really know what one of them really was) so I looked at what meat was not spoken for this month in the freezer and did a search for Flank Steak and rice. I was impressed. You can also have you own recipe box! so you can save them. That was new to me and I thought it was cool!!

  8. Sheila G. adds her thoughts::

Allrecipes is just about the only cookbook that I use and I also got my SIL hooked on it. Her husband is diabetic and the recipes often have a nutrition facts chart. I echo Karen in that I love love love the recipe search-the best part is being able to enter the items you don’t want to be included.

Go ahead. Make my day.
