I will head on over to the poll link in a few, but had to chime in. I make both powder and liquid. The liquid is about $2.00 for 5 gallons, and I use about 1/4 cup per load. The powder is for hubby's clothes, he's in construction and sometimes need an extra boost, I put the powder in (with baking soda added) run through a rinse cycle and then a regular cycle, no smelly hubby upon his return.

I like the powdered better. I made a big batch of liquid because my kids are coming home from college and they do a lot of laundry. I had added a small sixteen use bottle of cheer to the liquid detergent and use one cup, i imagine 150 loads for this batch.

I have used the powdered form, and it worked well but did not last as long. The liquid makes a 5 gallon bucket with just one bar of Fels - Naptha 1 cup of washing soda and 1 cup of Borax.

Im not sure if I liked the liquid as a cleaning agent as much though, although I just left it in the 5 gallon bucket. It turns into a gel consistancy, so maybe if I had used a funnel and dumped it into a smaller detergent container and shook it before every use it would have worked better. I am going to try it one more time in the liquid form before I give up on it for good. I t was super simple to make, and it made a lot. I also use cloth diapers, and it got them very clean and odor free. I think the botto line ith the liquid is make sure you shake it or stir it up really well before you use it, because it will gel.
It was very cheap to make I found every thing I needed at Kroger ( my local grocery store)
Have fun!

Yeah... I went and checked out the first commenter's recipe, & that's very similar. Ivory soap, cooking, it's pretty close. Smells all wrong, didn't get things nearly so clean. Maybe we're just dirtier than they are. Good luck!

I've tried it. It was liquid. Thin like water; ineffective like water too. I don't remember a whole lot of what was in there... borax, a bar or two of soap, maybe? But we didn't even use it up, it was that bad. And then the borax stayed there, taking up space on my shelf.... for half of forever!

Kim......we have been making our own laundry det for about two and half years now. It's so easy and SO cheap! We make the powder kind which can also be used in a HE washer, which we now have.

I will be posting our recipe on my blog since others have asked too.

My dh saw the Duggar's making their own laundry soap on t.v., asking me if I had ever thought about this. He mentioned it again, as he cringed over the price of the BIG OL' container at our local store.

I am about half-way through our last container of store-bought laundry soap and have been given an enthusiastic "thumbs up" to make my own. I will be trying it here sometime soon, probably before Christmas. There are 6 (almost 7) of us around here, and while most of them are still little, we seem to be going through the stuff like mad! I'm praying this works, as it will be such an AWESOME savings - *if* it works!!
