Now she is in the running for Scholastic’s Mommy Blogger awards!  She made the final cut out of a field of over 500 and is currently in 2nd place.  If you know and love Meredith’s blog, please vote for her.  If you don’t, go visit.  Then vote for her.

Voting ends March 13 and you can only vote once, so you have time to think about it.  But don’t think too long, because if you’re like me you’ll forget.  Don’t deny it.  You know it’s true.  Just do it now, ok?

Ice, Ice Baby

Vision Forum Deal of the Day: save 40-90%!

Today Becca gave Bethy a piece of ice to play with and she loved it! I couldn’t help but take pictures. You think that’s a good thing but when I (or anyone) take pictures of her I go crazy! After I narrowed them down there were 75, but don’t worry I’m only posting 13 :) .  Enjoy!

We just went on a weekend visit up to Oklahoma to see my mom’s family, and while we were there we went to the park.

copy-of-dsc05862

Even though she is scared of heights, I was able to get my best friend/aunt Briana  a whole 6 feet off the ground on the jungle gym. (and just so you know I am posing in this picture.  I do NOT take myself that seriously in real life.)

dsc05906

We all enjoyed sitting around visiting in the crisp February air, and I had to smack a certain red haired someone with a stick for ambushing me with oak apples.

copy-of-dsc05835

Uncle William and I also enjoyed our wild ride on the teeter-totter.

copy-of-dsc05866

Kaitlyn and Aunt Alaura spent most of the time on the jungle gym. (show offs)

Perry Boy had a lot of fun climbing high, and also played a little bit of baseball with Dad.

and even though it was really scary, Uncle William survived his daredevil, freefall down the slide.

I love this picture, when Mom had to take the little kids on a potty run. Aunt Briana took Bethie for her, and I snapped a few pics of her rapturous adoration. Everyone loves Bethie.

Vision Forum Deal of the Day: save 40-90%!

I know we’ve posted about a lot of Vision Forum sales lately, but this one should be really useful to some of you.  The rest of y’all can just heave a little sigh and click over to your next blog.

Vision Forum just sent out single-use coupon codes to get $25 off any order of $75 or more.  If you were on their mailing list, you should have gotten yours this morning.  If you’re not on the list but you wanted a coupon, this is where I say “I told you so.”

But I’m not cold-hearted enough to just leave it at that.  I’ll do my best to help even though you disregarded my sound advice.  tsk, tsk.

Here are 3 codes that haven’t been used yet.  Remember, they’re only good once so this time don’t procrastinate.  If you try and it works, let me know so we don’t give others false hope.  If you try and it doesn’t work, let me know since somebody else obviously beat you to it.  Agreed?

Did you receive a code that you won’t be using?  Would you consider leaving it in the comments for somebody else?  Very nice.  Thank you.

I went to IKEA

Vision Forum Deal of the Day: save 40-90%!

Does that make me a bad person?  IKEA is like the ultimate Stuff-Mart.  Walmart just went down about a thousand notches, as did Hobby Lobby.  Maybe that’s a good thing.  I’m not likely to just pop into IKEA once a week.  It will be much harder for me to carve out 5 hours for the 260 mile round trip, and the cost of gas will seriously cut into my savings.

But oh, the stuff.  Maybe it was a bad idea to bring home catalogs.

The antique stained hardwood bench with storage beneath for $250.  It sounds a bit steep until you consider the storage and the fact that it would take the place of 4 badly needed dining room chairs.  4 chairs that currently look like this:

chairs

If that’s too much, there is also the $69 bench.  Not very sturdy, but again, you have to consider the competition.

We lingered at the small dinner table for 4.  Four hardwood chairs and a matching hardwood table, all for $129.  This was tempting, I think.  We could buy 3 tables with their 4 chairs apiece and put them all end-to-end to seat 12 for less than $400.  We could pull them apart for games.  We could add to it as desired.

I saw and tried the foam mattresses.  I stared long and hard at the bunkbed designs, not thinking of buying but copying.  I gawked at the incredible use of space in their studio apartment setups.  I coveted the bookshelf systems, then repented and decided to build my own just like it.  Um, if hubby doesn’t mind.  Oh, hi hunney.  Didn’t see you there…

We loved one of the leather sofa systems.  It had several sections that would fit very nicely in our limited space and a low, flat back perfect for small children to stretch out behind the adults.  They already do that, but it’s precarious at best and I lose a lot of hair that way.  I couldn’t help but count where all the bodies would fit: 2 kids across the back, me and my hunney on the right side of the sofa, 2 more largish children next to us, a couple of mid-sized ones on the lounge-thing with another on the wide flat arm of it, 2 more on the huge square ottoman, and the baby in somebody’s lap.  We’re all accounted for, and all on a wipe-clean surface.  This sofa was made for us.  The price tag wasn’t made for us, but the sofa was.  Maybe we can build one out of…umm…a set of bunkbeds and a couple of cows?  Maybe not.

We ran quickly through the rest of the home furnishings, and I tried not to get left behind or get a bad case of whiplash craning my neck as we made our way through the linens and area rugs, past the wooden serving trays, and the baby section.  A changing table – a $3.99 step stool – the cutest little tiny table and chairs I ever saw – the ultimate simple and classic wooden high chair for less than $60!

I was feeling very impulsive, so suggested to hubby that we ought to wait to make any purchases.  I wanted 2 of everything, and that’s not a good frame of mind for shopping.  He agreed, and we headed for the door – but not before he picked up what I suspect he had been looking for all along: a replacement for the French press he had given me for my birthday.  This one is indestructible stainless steel instead of glass.  And I think it’s worth mentioning that the new one is twice as big.

GIVEAWAY

Blog about the Jonathan Park coupon above , and this $50 dollar contest and come back to leave a link to your post, and you will be entered in a giveaway for $50 in free downloads from Behemoth.com!

If you’re not sure where to start, we recommend The Widow’s Might.  It was the $101,000 grand prize winner at the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival, and is an incredibly well done film!  The soundtrack is a close second.  We’re frugal people, but the soundtrack was so good that our children pooled their funds to buy the soundtrack themselves.  It really is that good.  You can click on any of the tracks to hear a brief sample.

My dignity is saved by my crazy gypsy skirt

Vision Forum Deal of the Day: save 40-90%!

Today we visited my parents’ church for the first time.  We arrived early – a trick we need to perform more often – and occupied the back two rows.  Dad is working out of town, so with Mom and my 5 youngest sibs we made 17 heads in all.

A few minutes into the sermon, Bethany was sitting contentedly in my lap and I became vaguely aware of an odor.  Just as it wafted up from my subconscious into my conscious mind, I felt Rachael tugging frantically at my sleeve.

cue horror music: zeet! zeet! zeet!

I looked down and saw.  poop.  everywhere.  It was flowing in streams, even.  Like lava descending from a volcano.

It had spurted up and out of the back of Bethany’s diaper, coursing down the ample folds of my skirt and across the upholstered surface of the pew in which I sat.  It was touching Rachael’s dress in two places, which explained her frantic tugging on my sleeve.  I was sitting in a poop puddle.  I was a poop puddle.  It wasn’t pretty.

I stared in quiet horror for a few long moments, assessing my options, then I leaned over and tugged frantically at hubby’s sleeve.

Long story short: My 16yo sister took Rachael to the bathroom to rinse the hem of her dress.  Deanna took Bethany to the bathroom to strip her down and rinse her everything. Hubby brought me a handful of paper towels while I tried not to move too much, and another sister brought more damp ones.  I wiped, scrubbed, and sponged the pew as well as I could, then grabbed the whole mess and sprinted for the bathroom, trying to look cool, calm and casual.

In the bathroom I had another long, thoughtful moment, then I took off my skirt.  With one eye on the door, I rinsed it out in the sink.  Glad I decided to wear a slip this morning, though it didn’t seem strictly necessary at the time.   When my skirt was as clean as it was going to get, I briefly eyed the iron the floor.  Why was there an iron on the restroom floor?  Did God prompt somebody to put it there for me so I could iron my skirt dry?  I decided not.  Wearing dry clothes was not really a priority at the moment.  I felt it was more important just to be wearing clothes.  I rolled the wet skirt in a baby blanket, gave a quick twist, and put it back on.  Hurray for crazy gypsy skirts that hide details like the fact that your clothes are sopping wet.  I like to believe that it also hid the poop I was wearing a few minutes earlier.

The rest was easy.  I smiled at the lady in the hallway (if she only knew!), and eased open the door of the sanctuary.  Slipped back into my seat just in time for communion.  I  had missed the last half of the sermon, but I heard enough before the incident to know what it was about.  I’ll just close with the scripture text that it was based upon.  I think you’ll see why.

Psalm 127

A song of ascents. Of Solomon.

1 Unless the LORD builds the house,
its builders labor in vain.
Unless the LORD watches over the city,
the watchmen stand guard in vain.

2 In vain you rise early
and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—
for he grants sleep to [a] those he loves.

3 Sons are a heritage from the LORD,
children a reward from him.

4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are sons born in one’s youth.

5 Blessed is the man
whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their enemies in the gate.

The real story

Vision Forum Deal of the Day: save 40-90%!

Did you figure it out?

I’m sure you got close, at least.  We’re in Oklahoma, visiting my family.  The younger ones didn’t figure out what we were up to until we pulled into the driveway at 4 AM.  Apparently in their world, it’s not unusual to drive 9 hours when going out to dinner.  They didn’t even ask.  This is what happens when you live 50 miles from town.

The kids are having a good ole time playing with aunts and uncles their own age, and I’m having a good old time playing games with my mom, who could easily pass for my age.

PerryBoy spent the afternoon tagging along after my 10yo and 12yo brothers, just being one of the guys – except that he was only 2 feet tall and spent much the day wearing his jeans backwards.  He was quite a trendsetter swinging a baseball bat and sporting that zipper down the crack of his bum.

How are you spending the weekend?

Playing an old trick on new kids

Vision Forum Deal of the Day: save 40-90%!

The cover story: we’re picking up Dad after work and going out to dinner.  The real story?  Only those who have figured it out on their own know.  They are all 9yo and up.  The big girls put us up to it this time.

CURRENT Q & A:

Why are we taking suitcases?

It’s part of the recent dejunking we’ve all been working on.  We have too many suitcases, so we’ll be dropping these two extra suitcases at the Goodwill while we’re out.

Why are we taking the dogs to Aunt Stephanie’s house?

Because a prospective owner is coming to look at the puppies while we’re gone.

But why did we take all the dogs?  Why not just the puppies?

Because we might be out very late at dinner, and it would be mean to leave poor Precious locked up in  her kennel for so long.  She’ll have much more fun playing with the puppies at Aunt Steph’s house.  And the pups might want their mom there.  We can’t leave Lady all alone!

Why did we take all the rest of the dog food?

Just in case we’re out too late.  Then we might just let the dogs spend the night at Aunt Steph’s house.

Why are we taking clothes for Dad?

He wants to change out of his work clothes before dinner.

Why did we take a whole bag of disposable diapers?

We need to return them to WalMart since we use cloth diapers now.  We’ll add that to our list of errands.

PROJECTED Q & A:

Why are we bringing the playpen from Vision Forum?

It’s an extra that we brought to VF, but nobody uses it here.  We’re going to drop it at the Goodwill when we stop there for the suitcases.

Where are we going for dinner?

We haven’t decided yet.  I know it’s a long way.  We’ll probably try someplace new. What sounds good to you?

Can we order dessert?

No, let’s go somewhere else for dessert.  It’s a long way too, but it will be worth it.

Are we there yet?

Did we stop yet?

to be continued…

In which I FINALLY quit procrastinating

Vision Forum Deal of the Day: save 40-90%!

I have had four yards of beautiful fabric sitting in my drawer for several months now waiting to be made into a skirt.  Part of the reason it has taken me so long to use it is because I couldn’t find a pattern I liked, and part was that I didn’t feel like taking the trouble to look for a pattern I really liked. But no more! I have flourished the scissors, floored the pedal, and made myself a lovely wrap-around skirt using the pattern from a dress I made (see top picture). It was really easy to put together, and it is even easier to add button holes to the waistband to make it fit several different sized people.

I love the colors, and I’m so glad that I got polka dots and roses.  I love “crazy gypsy skirts”.

I’m not as tall as the picture makes me look. Kait was kneeling when she took the bottom picture and it makes me look like an Amazon.

New fun & games in our house

Vision Forum Deal of the Day: save 40-90%!

In a Pickle, from our friends the Shepherd family

Speed Scrabble, courtesy of  The Common Room.  Ditch the Scrabble board for this one, and feel free to combine more than one set of  Scrabble letters.  Everyone starts with 7 or 10 letters.  No need to keep them hidden.  The rest of the letters are turned face down in the center of the table.  Everyone works at the same time using their own letters to build their own miniature crossword on the table in front of them.  Each time somebody – anybody -  has used all of her letters she calls out “GO!” and each player takes a new letter and continues to build and rearrange her own letters, trying to use them all.  The game ends when all the letters are gone and somebody has used up all of hers.  In theory you could each add up your score at the end and declare a winner, but we think the fun is in the play.

Dutch Blitz, discovered in the Vision Forum break room.  One of the interns brought a deck to work during the crazy the 4th quarter and life hasn’t been the same since.  Yesterday our new set arrived here at the  house.

Pen, another discovery from The Common Room.  This one is fast and furious fun!  It requires a single die, one pen, plus a sheet of paper for each player.  Take turns rolling the die.  If you roll a 1 or 6, grab the pen and start writing numbers from 99 down to 1.  Other players keep taking turns rolling as you write.  As soon as another player rolls a 1 or 6 she grabs the pen from you and starts writing her own countdown.  Players don’t start their countdown over each time, but continue their countdown on subsequent turns.  Play continues until somebody reaches zero.

Younger players may be given an advantage by starting their countdown at 50 or 20, or even by counting up rather than down, making this truly a family game.  I laughed when the Headmistress mentioned in her instructions for Pen that girls should tie back their hair.  Then we learned the hard way when somebody nearly lost a handful of hair in the excitement.  Incidentally, if my instructions don’t make sense then read the Headmistress’s.

Greed, an old standby.  This one takes 5 or 6 dice and a sheet of paper.  The instructions on Wikipedia are so similar to the way we play that I won’t bother to type my own instructions.

Set is not new in our house, but it’s another great favorite.  This is one of the few challenging games in which a fairly young child stands a chance against an adult.

We also enjoy Cribbage, Dictionary, Tonk and Rummy.

What games does your family play?  Extra points if they don’t require special equipment.
