Today is my hunney’s birthday.  Since he didn’t tell my age in his birthday post for me, we’ll do him the same courtesy.  Those of you who are curious will just have to guess.  I wonder if there’s any significance that the kids and I are sharing exactly 36 reasons we love him?

Just a few of the many reasons I love him:dsc03830 medium 150x150 Happy Birthday to my love

  1. He brings me chocolate.  Lots of it.  Good chocolate.  Wait, am I shallow to say that first?  What I meant to say is that he’s hot.  Just the sight of the back of his neck makes me feel quivery.
  2. He loves me, and tells me often.  And he proves it by bringing me chocolate.
  3. He is a leader to me even though I have a tendency to be stubborn and proud and I always think I’m right.
  4. He’s a good dad who strives to win and keep the hearts of his children.
  5. He loves to give: gifts, time, chocolate, and whatever else is needed by those in his life.
  6. He’s not afraid of hard work, either mental or physical.
  7. He’s equally at home shoveling snow in shorts in the Ohio winter, or roofing in jeans in the Texas summer.
  8. Deanna:dsc 0179 medium 150x150 Happy Birthday to my love

  9. I look like him.
  10. He lets us ambush people with Airsoft rifles to get revenge on them.
  11. He introduced me to Lord Peter Wimsy and Bertie & Jeeves, and Stephen R. Lawhead.
  12. He taught me the easy way to do division when Mom and Spectrum Math were making me cry every day.
  13. He subjected himself to horrific sunburns while he was building us a house.
  14. Kaitlyn

  15. He has been taking us for birthday lunches for as long as I can remember.
  16. He takes us to work with him.
  17. He built a house for us.
  18. He’s got a great sense of humor (see picture to the right).

  20. He lets me buy my own copies of books that we already have (even if we have 4 copies already).
  21. He let me read ‘Thank You Jeeves.’ (P.G. Wodehouse)
  22. He is letting me keep Sestra and he has decided to let Megan keep a snake just like Sestra that she found last night.
  23. He let me buy a dried alligator head.
  24. Megan:

  25. “Dad is great!  He gives us chocolate cake!”  Extra points if you know the comedian who said it first.
  26. He introduced us to British comedy.
  27. He lets us keep a lot of our own books even though our house is small.
  28. He convinced me to read Lord of the Ring.
  29. Natalie:

  30. He takes me out for birthday lunches.
  31. He buys me candy and gives me money sometimes.
  32. He got me Scottish Seas and Heartstrings.
  33. He taught me to paint.

  35. Becca:

  36. He is nice.
  37. He tickles me.
  38. He bought Kung Fu Panda for Natalie’s birthday and for me too because I finished my math book.
  39. Rachael:

  42. Perry IV, aka The Boy:

  43. I love Dad to fight with me and I like to punch him in the tummy.
  44. Bethany:

  45. pppppbbbtthhh! [drool.  giggle.] Daaaaad!

I have to admit that at first I was a little disappointed that most of the kids’ reasons were about what their Dad has done for them, or the treats he has given them, or the literary taste that he has helped them cultivate.  They seemed a bit shallow, and a father is supposed to present a picture of Christ in the home.

But as I thought about it, I realized that this is exactly what the children were telling me in their own childlike ways.  They see their dad as a provider of cake and all things yummy, a shepherd in math and teaching them to love British comedy and books, a loving and benevolent leader who fights with them and lets them punch him in the tummy, all with a deep and sacrificial love – remember the horrific sunburns?

No wonder we all love him.

We did a few things last week that I didn’t mention at the time:

  • Said goodbye to my honey and my four big girls early Wednesday morning as they headed out for the Vision Forum Father & Daughter Retreat at Callaway Gardens in Georgia.  Usually he gets to take one daughter, and has been making his way down the line.  This year he talked his way into taking 4, since they are now old enough to manage the registration tables alone.  Look for posts and photos by the girls very soon.  Much fun was had by all, including those of us who stayed home.
  • Hubby admonished us to have a nice relaxing 6 days without them, rather than tackling a back-breaking project as we have in the past.  I casually mentioned to those of us left behind that maybe we could paint/repaint the door trim while they were gone, but then remembered aloud that we were supposed to do fun stuff instead of working on projects.  Those words were repeated back to me all weekend out of the mouths of babes: “But Mom, we love to paint!  Dad said to do fun stuff: painting is really fun!”  And so we did – after 7yo Becca and 9yo Natalie watched me countersink the nail heads that were still sticking out and learned to putty and sand the nail holes and cracks.  Much fun was had by all, and our house seems cleaner just because the door trim is now gleaming glossy white instead of a combination of natural wood, greenish-gray, and dingy white.
  • We shopped for Easter dresses for the girls who didn’t get new dresses for High Tea.  This will be the first year in a long time that they have had new dresses for spring.  We didn’t get anything new for The Boy or Bethany since both have plenty of dress clothes that are (or look) new.
  • We ate lots of ice cream.  Orange sherbet and vanilla in cones to be specific.
  • We enjoyed other fun foods that are not normally on the menu around here: chicken nuggets & fries, cereal, hot dogs, personal freezer pizzas, dinners from McDonald’s & Wendy’s while we ran evening errands.
  • We visited my parents and siblings over the hill.  On one occasion, we had the good sense to arrive just as they were serving up Blue Bell ice cream and strawberries.  While we were there, I tried my hand at propagating Mom’s fig tree by air layering.  I’ll have to wait a month or two before we know if it worked, but it’s supposed to be very easy with figs.  I started 8 so far and would like to do a few more so even if not all of them take, Mom and I will each have several.  I’ll probably also try to root some cuttings directly just to see which method works better, though air layering is supposed to give a faster, stronger start and fruits much sooner because it works with a much bigger cutting.

And then last night we welcomed home our returning troops.  Even the dog was really glad to see them, but not as glad as I was.  And it wasn’t just because he brought me chocolate, though that certainly didn’t hurt.

I can’t believe it’s been 4 weeks since I shampooed.  The change has been very gradual, but either my hair is getting better or I’m getting used to this.  I’ve decided to wash with a mixutre of 1 egg and a bit of lemon juice once each week, and use baking soda with apple cider vinegar about every other day for the rest of the week.

Incidentally, I learned the same lesson that the Headmistress learned about egg shampoo, though not so dramatically.  Don’t use very hot water, Do rinse very thoroughly, and for the love of all that is good and pure, Don’t use a blow dryer on your hair unless you want to see how many bits of egg white you missed even though you thought you were rinsing thoroughly.

And if you don’t take my advice?  Well, the bits of cooked egg white comb out pretty easily.

My hair still seems a bit heavy and greasy, but not terribly so.  I can wear it down if I want, but I still don’t think it really looks nice.  Since we moved to south Texas I’ve preferred to keep it up anyway.  All my short new hairs that used to stick up stubbornly all over my head are far more manageable with a bit of natural oil on them.  In this sense, my hair looks far better!  No more post-partum crew cut!

I do still notice a bit of that “scalp” smell that a commentor mentioned, but everyone else in the house swears they can’t smell it unless they sniff my head closely, not something I expect to happen often in public places.  Hubby has requested that I wash the pillow cases more often since it has become noticeable there.  I was thinking the same thing.  icon razz No shampoo week 4

I was tickled to learn this week that several of my sisters and one sister in law are doing this as well.  I’m not the family nutcase!  At least, not the only one.  I was also pleased to learn that NPR did a story on the spreading No-Poo movement, so apparently the idea is going mainstream.  Even so, I refuse to call it No-Poo.  I just can’t do it.  It sounds too much like…well, you know what it sounds like.   We crazy people have to draw the line somewhere, you know.

We should never let circumstances – even difficult ones – determine our standard of right and wrong.  God’s standard is perfect and eternal.

Fellow members of the congregation where we attend were told that their unborn grandchild had no brain. The parents were urged to abort. They were assured there was no brain, and this child would die once born anyway.

They decided that since their doctors’ best advice ended with the same heartbreaking scenario no matter what they chose- they were going to be the parents of a dead child- they would prefer to at least have the chance to hold her gently before she left them rather than dismember her, and they continued the pregnancy.

Can you guess how it ends?  Vist The Common Room.

Hearing:

  • Kids playing Monopoly.
  • Baby cooing on the floor, as she scoots around with a bare bottom.  I love uncarpeted floors!
  • A soft breeze.  The calm after the storm.
  • Sleepy groans from little ones napping.
  • The washer as it finishes its cycle.
  • The hum of the computer fan.

Tasting:

  • Stale chocolate.  Sigh.
  • Kettle chips, left behind by a kind guest.

Seeing:

  • Curtains rustling in the breeze
  • Ceiling fans spinning overhead
  • Diapers hanging from the drying rack.  Need to move those outside now that the storm has passed.
  • A sad poinsetta, still hanging on 3 months after Christmas.
  • The light in the fridge as I rustle for a better snack.  I finally replaced the bulb this morning.  Funny how much you miss the little things, but don’t notice until they’re back.
  • The sun shining in through the windows, a welcome sight after a gloomy and stormy morning.

Smelling:

  • Fresh outdoors, washed clean with the first few rains in a long drought.
  • Stale chocolate.  Do I want another?  How desperate am I?

Feeling:

  • Missing somebody.

At most of the baby showers I get to attend, we don’t do games.  It seems like most people scoff at baby shower games, or openly dread them. Maybe they secretly enjoy them but they’re too ashamed to say so.

Not me.  I like them.  Except the one where you microwave candy bars, squish them in a diaper, and try to identify by aroma – or taste, if you’re that determined to win.  I’ve heard tales, but never been invited to try that game, for which I am thankful.

I especially like the one where you try to guess the expecting mother’s waist measurement, mostly because I’ve played twice and won both times.  The first was long ago, when we had to guess the number of toilet paper squares to wrap around the guest of honor.  Remember, Michelle?  Last Saturday we used yarn, a more exacting media.  I say it’s a math thing, and if you’ve been here long you know how I feel about math.  Some people think in words or pictures; I think in numbers.  I think English is my second language; algebra was first.

I don’t think the ladies in my church knew this.  There was some joking about disqualifying me before the game started, but that’s just because I’ve been pregnant the most times.  They didn’t see the confidence in my moves as I eyed the victim and wrapped the yarn around my arm the long way, fingertip to elbow.  Twice and a smidge more.  They didn’t know I was thinking in terms of Pi and cubits and – well, I guess past experience did help because I’ve measured my own pregnant belly more than once, but  I knew skinny little Camille was going to come in way below my own measurements.

And so we all cut a piece of yarn that we thought would fit Camille’s bulging waistline.  The pastor’s wife went first. Kathy is the life of the party.  She had cut her yarn far, far too long, getting her first laugh from the crowd.  When she tried in on Camille with 2/3 of the length left over, she got her second round of laughter.  But we Presbyterians know when we’re on a roll, and Kathy didn’t stop there.  She decided to wrap her yarn around Camille’s belly the other way.  Vertically.  Starting at her feet and up around her head, down her back to her feet again.  The crowd roared as the ends met perfectly!

A few more had a try at it, and all were too long.  Not far off – they were good guesses, but Camille is just a little thing, even at T minus 24 hours.  Most of us look like we swallowed a watermelon or two at that stage.  She looked like she has swallowed one of those $5 personal-sized seedless melons.

And then I was up.  My daughter had ridiculed me when I cut my string.  “Mom!  That’s way  too small!  That will never fit!”  At that, I had reluctantly added an inch or two, but I refused to add more before snipping.  Now I stood before her to justify my decision.

It was too beautiful.  It was perfect.  Perfect. I wrapped it around Camille, and the crowd gasped as the ends met neatly.

See?  Who says you never use higher math in everyday life?  I love math, even though they’ll probably never let me play again.

The assignment this week on Homeschool Kids Write is acrostic poetry about spring.

Acrostic poetry is where you take a word and use each letter as the starting letter of the lines, so you can read it going down, It doesn’t have to rhyme, so it’s pretty easy. I really enjoyed this because poetry is one of my hobbies, so I am going to post several poems.

FLOWERS

Feel the growing

Love the sunshine

Overarching branches

Weaving waving grasses

Ethreal petals of softest silk

Running foxes

Singing, swirling, bubbling, brooks.

TREES

The sunshine warming

Rivers wakened

Ever growing

Eagles soaring

Summer coming

Those are the ones I did about the light and fluffy parts of spring, but I also wrote one about lightning because huge storms with lots of thunder and lightning is one of my favorite parts of spring.

LIGHTNING

Long and jagged

Insistent, Ragged

Greased for speed

Hell’s own fire

Teeth of dragons

Never the same

Ire of heaven

Numbing killer

Golden death on bladed wings.

What do you think? I like the way the one about lightning turned out best, which one do you like?

Our older girls spend a bit of time nearly every day doing certain school subjects on the computer: html lessons, PhotoShop tutorials, typing, even Bible reading.  We have also found some highly educational and entertaining games along the way.  You can find links at the bottom left sidebar under Fun & Games.

But I haven’t found any really fun & educational activities online for pre-readers, specifically 4yo Rachael.  Some are fun, some are educational, but very few are both.

Since she would really love to do school on the computer like her sisters, I told her I would put the question to our readers: Do you know something I don’t?  What are you favorite educational online games/activities for little ones?

Here are some acrostic poems I wrote:

See the flowers blooming,

Peeping from their buds.

Rising from their winter graves,

Into the warm spring air.

Now they can show their splendor,

God is good, he gave us spring.

—————————————–

Feel the breeze a blowing,

Little flowers blooming,

Out in the sunlight,

Where the puppies romp.

Every day a new flower blooms.

Raising its head heavenward.

Spring, the prettiest time of year!

…Decided that he was going to walk to Aunt Stephanie’s house, half a mile away.  4yo Rachael was with him when he headed down the driveway.  She tried to talk him out of the idea but when he hit the end of the long driveway and turned up the road, she knew what to do.  She left him and ran for help.

Smart girl.  That had to be a tough decision, leaving her stubborn little brother out on the road.

By the time reinforcements arrived, he was halfway up the hill.  It really wasn’t far and technically he was still in front of our property, but it was a long way for a little man on chubby legs.

Since this was the first time he tried a stunt like that and because he has proven himself pliable, he just got a stern talking to.  He now understands the dangers of a trek to Aunt Stephanie’s house and regularly assures me with wide eyes that he doesn’t go alone anymore.

Crazy little man.

Who’s with me on this crazy little trip?

It’s been 3 weeks since I used shampoo – unless you count the egg shampoo – and I’m really wondering if there’s going to be a happy ending to this tale.  I did try a shampoo bar, using just a touch of suds right at my scalp, but I didn’t like what it did to my hair.

I see more wave in my hair than ever, but also more oil.  I can and do wear it up in a clip, so nobody knows but my own household.  But when will the oil end?  I certainly don’t want it to feel like this forever!  Just for the sake of giving it a good try, I want to stick with it another couple of weeks, but I’m not sure what to expect or hope for.  I’m afraid this works best for curly hair that tends to be so dry.  My 2 curly tops now have softer, shinier hair than ever.  Those of us with straight hair?  Not so happy, but mostly me since my hair is far oilier than that of the children.

I don’t want to leave you with the wrong impression.  I haven’t been miserable.  My hair is soft and wavy.  It feels almost sticky when it’s damp from the shower, but once it’s thoroughly dried I can run my fingers through it.  I can’t decide if it feels nicely moisturized like skin after applying lotion, or if it just feel like somebody dumped a cup of Wesson Oil on my head.  Sometimes I think it looks healthy and shiny, but then I give it a swing and it separates into strands.  Ugh.  Back into the clip.  Pictures?  I don’t think so.

I have been using baking soda and vinegar every day.  This week I think I’ll back the baking soda off to every other day, probably with just a vinegar rinse on the off days.  Maybe I’ll just rinse with warm water.  I might do the egg shampoo again too, just to give myself a break.

It seems like I’ve been a bit scarce around here.  That’s largely because I’ve been working more in the real world than the virtual one – painting, clearing the woods near our house, gardening, and general mothering.  But it’s also partly because I’ve been posting a bit more on my other blog, Frugal Hacks.

If you visited FH in the past and found it painfully slow, take heart.  I found the problem and fixed it!  The site now comes up faster than inflation.  There are several other contributors, but here are a few of my own posts that I thought you might be interested in:

Hubby has also been posting over there a bit, including this amazingly simple tip and a brief diatribe about personal responsibility which really generated some discussion.
