Day 3 of line drying our laundry indoors

Vision Forum Deal of the Day: save 40-90%!

I would never presume to complain about rain during a 2 year drought, but you just might hear me whimper a bit about the cold.  It doesn’t help that when we caved and pulled the space heaters out of early retirement, we found 3 out of 4 broken!  One managed to set off the new smoke alarm in my bedroom last night with a mysterious burning-dust smell.  We unplugged it for the night and froze.  It quit working when we plugged it back in this morning.

I will, however, give thanks long and loud that my laundry girl was all caught up when the rain hit.  The Boy did his best to foil our plans by wetting the bed for the first time in weeks – comforter, pillow, sheets and all – but we managed in spite of it all.  We have 2 loads hanging indoors now, and barely 2 loads waiting in the dirty laundry bins.  I think we can keep up with this, though more heat in the house would speed the process along.

We started about 2 months ago hanging our laundry indoors on a huge drying rack. Hubby came home with this enormous (and enormous it is at almost 6 feet high) drying rack. I can put 2 super size loads on it which can include 10 to 12 towels and it works GREAT. It has saved us almost $35.00 in the first month. I even have a new dryer!! I started giving everyone a laundry day as to when their laundry is done. Monday is hubby and mine, Tuesday is oldest and youngest daughters, Wed is 2 boys, Thursday is youngest 2 and Friday is towels/sheets. It works amazingly well is so many areas. The best being that we do not have mismatched socks anymore. I help them load, unload, and hang on rack. Then they are responsible to fold and put away. The clothes dry within the day, even our dresses dry well. At first I had it down in our living room (not a beautiful sight, but I am a practical person) and our wood stove dried it fast. But recently we put it upstairs and it dries in our little laundry room just as well. I just cannot overload it or it will leave a musty smell.
To note the first load is put in the washer and on the rack before bed for the next day.
Sheets are another issue but we still hang them and just move them around so they dry everywhere.
I love hanging clothing outside but get tired of bugs and bird poop so I will use the inside drying rack from now on.

    Michele,
I would love to hear more about your giant indoor drying rack. Where did your husband get it? Do you have any photos? Does it seem durable?
I’m using a smallish one from The Container Store. It has about the same amount of drying space as the tall wooden ones but feels much sturdier and folds up smaller and more easily when not in use.

hey check out my off grid appliances tag and i show how we dry in the house all the time. have done so for the best parts of michigan winter the last 6 months. I will say though with 2 wood stoves, laundry dries in 3-6 hours! i am looking forward to putting it out on the line though.

I find moving my laundry racks around the house helps get the clothes dry. I put them in the kitchen anytime the oven is going to be on. I also find that underneath the ceiling fan in the living room really helps to keep the drying process moving right along.

Can you tell me too where you got such a big drying rack? I too live in Texas. I do not use my dryer. I love to hang laundry outside when I can, but we have had a bit of rain. Thank you for any information you can give me.
