Our family enjoys Facebook.  We use it to share quick thoughts and updates, interesting links and videos.  We use it to keep in touch with extended family, and friends both local and long distance.  We also use it to rib one another – we love to hijack each other’s status.

However, we try not to let it eat up too much of our time.  Facebook is full of games, quizzes, applications, causes, and a myriad of other time-wasters.  I won’t say we never do any of these, but I do have to say that one has to be on guard against being drawn into them.  It’s too easy to feel obligated to act on every request that you receive from friends, and Facebook makes it too easy to inundate your friends with requests.

I’ll also stoop to a bit of whininess and let you know that it wastes my time when my friends participate in all of these extra activities, because I have to sort through and scroll past them just to see what people are really up to.

I have two points:

First, an admonishment to all of us.  Let’s use our time wisely.  There is a time and a place for recreation, but let’s exercise moderation and wisdom.  We don’t let our kids play video games all day, and we should hold ourselves to the same standard.  Let’s not play Facebook all day.  Fellowship is one thing; endless inane quizzes are another.  I have often failed in this area.  Let’s all do better.

Second, if you’re annoyed  by all the time-wasters showing up on your wall because your friends are doing them, you can hide those applications.  Just go to the empty spot to the right of the application on your wall.  When your mouse hovers, you should see the word, “hide”.  You will be able to choose to hide your friend’s updates or to hide that particular application no matter who does it.

In which I fear I have been woefully remiss…

I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to tell y’all this story. I think everyone should know this story.

Once upon a time, we were strolling around Main Street in Branson, and I saw a hat. A beautiful hat. It was straw, which made it lightweight enough for summer wear, and right in the front, was a big turquoise. It could have been made for me. Alas, I didn’t have enough money to buy it. That didn’t stop me from trying it on and showing it to Dad though.

I wore it until it was time to leave the little gift store where I found it. Regretfully I put it back on the rack and bade a fond farewell. I sighed a little when I looked back. It needed me.

We wandered around for a few more hours, and I became casually acquainted with a few other hats, but none of them had that feeling of…rightness, that I had sensed in the straw hat. “This relationship would never have lasted” I told them, and placed them one by one back on their respective shelves.

Around 4pm it was time to head back to the hotel. I helped the little kids into their seats in the van and then Dad did something unexpected. He told me to follow him, and started walking back toward the first little gift shop…

The rest is like a fairytale. I was walking on air as we went in the door, and I ran to my hat. I held it close and promised I would never leave again. We would always be together.

Thanks Dad.

It’s Friday so I”m out getting groceries today.  Consequently, you won’t be seeing much from me today.  With an hour commute each way to and from town, groceries are an all-day affair.

If you’re wondering why you’re hearing from me right now, we just stopped in at Vision Forum for a brief nursing break and a visit with hubby.  We’ll be back again when it’s time to pick him up and head home.  I like this Friday routine.  :)

I learned something good about WalMart today.  I know a lot of people think poorly of WalMart for a variety of reasons, so it’s nice to have something nice to say about them.

I asked if they had any food-waste that I could have for my chickens, and they said no.  I’m a big girl.  I can take no for an answer.  But here’s what I really appreciated: the manager came out to explain to me exactly what happens to each type of waste!

  • The meat is pulled and frozen on the sell-by date, while it is actually still safe to eat for several more days.  They donate it to a local food pantry.
  • Unsold bakery/deli goods are also donated to a local distribution for the poor.
  • Any produce that goes bad before being sold is collected for a local wildlife preserve.

I was impressed.  I’m not an environmentalist, but I do think we need to exercise good stewardship over the resources God gives us.   This sounds like an excellent example.

I was even more impressed with the level of customer service displayed by the manager.  She could have just had someone tell me no, but she took time out of her day to explain why my request was being refused.

Isn’t it refreshing when somebody can tell you no in a way that actually makes you glad?

I was feeling bored today, so I decided I should do a blog post.

I know that at first glance this post might make me look very vain, so I should probably hurry up and tell y’all that I’m just showing off showing y’all my new haircut.

Isn’t it great? Mom did it last week, and I love it! I don’t have any close up pictures of how it was before, but it was all the same length.

Personally I think Mom doesn’t do herself justice when she talks about her hair cutting skills. When she was my age, she used to layer her own hair!

The way my hair is now, there is a lot less hair to worry about, so I’m not as hot during the day, but it looks thicker because of the layering/tapering.

From the back it still looks just as long,

and it’s a lot more flippy and swishy than it was before! I love it!

Thank you Mom, for doing a stupendous job.

And a picture of Bess because she’s just so darn cute.

btw, am I completely crazy for wanting some of these, and these?

Oh yeah, these too. Also some rainbow striped toe socks.

Life is way too short to wear boring socks.

Maybe you’ve already read it.  This article has been making the rounds and stirring up both sides of the great carbon footprint debate: Having Children Brings High Carbon Impact.

…Take, for example, a hypothetical American woman who switches to a more fuel-efficient car, drives less, recycles, installs more efficient light bulbs, and replaces her refrigerator and windows with energy-saving models. If she had two children, the researchers found, her carbon legacy would eventually rise to nearly 40 times what she had saved by those actions.

“Clearly, the potential savings from reduced reproduction are huge compared to the savings that can be achieved by changes in lifestyle,” the report states…

If it’s new to you, make sure your force fields are up.  No matter what your lifestyle, if you have children you are burdening the planet more than you ever imagined.   You are environmentally irresponsible, to say the least.

If you have already seen it, I hope you took time to read some of the comments too. Many are from people like us who value children.  Others are from environmentalists, but they are hardly in agreement.  Maybe we as Christians don’t have room to talk, but I can’t help being amazed at the division within their own ranks.

While some simply follow the leader and nod in agreement, others follow the reasoning to its logical conclusion: death.  Still others see the inconsistencies in the prevailing arguments coming out of the environmentalist camp, and some even say things that I can wholeheartedly agree with.

There are currently over 300 comments.  Here are just a few of my favorites:

Of the serial killers I’m aware, John Wayne Gacy was the greenest. His victims were young, so he snuffed out many years of carbon consumption. He could have only been greener by targeting females.

Sad, but true.

…This article is a joke, right? If there aren’t going to be any more people, what’s the point of saving the planet. It’s not as if cockroaches care how many greenhouse gases are in the atmosphere…

Ooooh, never thought of that.

Duh. This is obvious. And useless. Reproducing has little inherent harm to the earth. Why don’t we have a discussion questioning the reasons for gross consumption by people in the developed world? Why don’t we talk about the emotional issues that drive Americans (and to a lesser but growing extent, the rest of the world) to spend/toss/spend/toss at soaring rates?

Let’s hit at the core of the problem. When we start being honest with ourselves about why we need a 4-pages-long registry for the birth of a single baby, then maybe we’ll see a greener earth…

Very good question.  We need to be good stewards of God’s creation, and we need to raise up children to continue taking care of His creation until He returns.

You liberals keep swearing off kids. Soon, there will be fewer of you.

I’ll admit it.  I was thinking the same thing.

I suggest that all the people who want to help the planet commit suicide. This will completely eliminate your carbon footprint and will reduce the world’s population.

How can you argue with logic like that?

So, [to a previous commentor], you do want someone to feed you when you can’t work anymore (indirectly, through taxes, Social Security payments and such), but you don’t want to spend any efforts for this yourself?

Somehow the liberals never seem to think this far ahead.  Our children will be feeding them, paying their bills, and dispensing medication in their old age.

What gives the already-living a special ethical status if the safety of the earth is truly at stake? Those so concerned about the earth that they tell others whether to have a family can start reducing the earth’s population one at a time any time they wish.

That’s right.  Let’s put our money where our mouth is, shall we?

As my friend Dug always said: “I’m not having kids; I can pollute as much as I want.”

And they worry that those of us with kids are being irresponsible…

So from this can we derive that war IS the answer?
Do we need more giant wars like WW1 (16 million dead) and WW2 (50-70 million dead) instead of puny wars like Vietnam (2 million dead, max) and Iraq?
Should we stop trying to prevent influenza pandemics and millions of deaths from malaria?
Should we stop trying to feed the hungry?
The four horsemen of The New Ecology: war, conquest, war, famine and death.

Wonderful! Perhaps, in time and with concerted effort, we can achieve negative population growth! Imagine, the earth will be devoid of human life, but positively crystalline in its pristine grandeur!

There is a time and place for sarcasm.  I believe this comments provides an excellent example.

Economists (even very green economists) might take a different viewpoint on the issue posed by the blog. Carbon footprint is a cost, one of many costs entailed by childbirth. On the other hand, a new human being is a good thing, a positive value.

So, the question really comes down to whether the value of a child exceeds the costs, including the environmental impact. Clearly, some readers believe a child has little or no value. For others, the value of a child far exceeds any conceivable cost.

As to my own values, I would need to know whether we are talking about my kid or yours.

The emphasis was mine.  I wanted to make sure you read to the end of that comment.

If the point of saving the planet from global warming by reducing our carbon footprint isn’t to leave a better place for our children, then why bother? If we can’t have kids, we might as well use this place up while we can.

I’m a pacific northwest dwelling, environmental promoting, prius driving mom, but even I have to admit, sometimes these environmentalists miss the forest for the trees.

I suppose we could just commit suicide as well, or bomb any country we chose and elminate a large carbon footprints worth of people, but that would also hardly be the point, now would it?

Amen, sister.  And that’s where I’m tempted to hug a tree-hugger.

Go read some more comments, but be warned.  The language is a little rough here and there.

Just call me Bigfoot. Apparently my carbon footprint is even bigger than my shoe size.

If you love Starbucks but can’t afford the habit, try my addiction instead.  We’ve been sipping homemade cold coffee that tastes like the Starbucks-in-a-bottle for years, but now we’re taking it to a new level.

With our new blender Homemade Starbucks style frappuccinos (courtesy of Swagbucks), we are now serving them frozen.  There are some definite perks to forgoing the a/c in South Texas.  I have the perfect excuse to sip these treats all day long!

Each of my daughters seems to find her own area of expertise in the kitchen, and 11yo Megan has become our blender-meister.  Here is the recipe she has developed for fraps.

Starbucks-style Frappuccino

makes 2 grande (16 oz each)

  • 3 cups ice
  • 1 1/2 Tbs. instant coffee -  I use decaf.  A good national brand tastes best, but even the cheap stuff will make you regret you ever paid $4 for a frap.
  • 3 Tbs. granulated sugar
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream -  Not strictly necessary, but makes it even yummier.  Try this at your own risk.

Blend til smooth and enjoy.  Drink with a straw.  Remember to share, because this was 2 large servings.

options:

  1. Mocha: add 2 Tbs. of unsweetened cocoa powder.
  2. Java Chip: blend in chocolate chips
  3. Caramel Macchiato: replace the sugar with a 1/3 cup of caramel sauce.
  4. Get really fancy and top it with real whipped cream.
  5. Try drinking it all yourself.

If you live outside the US and you’ve ever ordered from Vision Forum – or tried to order from Vision Forum - you were probably frustrated at the cost of shipping.
That’s changed now.
After a lot of hard work and anticipation from within, a new system is finally in place!  International customers can now place an order and pay actual shipping!
Actually, this applies to domestic customers as well: shipping charges are now calculated on weight and size rather than estimates based upon the dollar value of your order.   This means that you’ll pay just over over $2 to ship a CD first class.
I have to admit that I don’t pay shipping charges from Vision Forum unless you count the kiss that I give my hunney when he brings me something new from the warehouse, but I have been quietly pushing for this change for a long time.  I’m not saying that my pushiness helped speed things along.  I just wanted you to know that I was on your side.

I mean, please. You know, if you were already going to order, or if you were thinking about it.  Or if you’re so excited about the change that you want to show your gratitude by placing a small order.  Or a large order.  Especially if you live outside the US, because I can almost guarantee that they are watching the stats on international orders right now to see if the new system makes a difference.
Or you could just leave a comment to let us know that we’re not alone in thinking this new shipping system was a great idea.  But I really like the idea where you order through my link.  I’m just saying.

Bear with me there are extensive quotes below from several different articles.

From Whitehouse .gov

Speaking shortly after the confirmation, the President said he was grateful for the Senate’s confirmation, and gave special thanks the Senate Judiciary Committee for their hard work. He then reflected on Judge Sotomayor’s qualifications, and the historic nature of her confirmation:

….They’ve gauged her respect for the proper role of each branch of our government, her commitment to faithfully apply the law to the facts at hand, and her determination to protect our core constitutional rights and freedoms….

This is a role that the Senate has played for more than two centuries, helping to ensure that “equal justice under the law” is not merely a phrase inscribed above our courthouse door, but a description of what happens every single day inside the courtroom...And in the end, the outcome of your case will be determined by nothing more or less than the strength of your argument and the dictates of the law.

These core American ideals – justice, equality, and opportunity — are the ideals she’s fought for throughout her career…

You can read the President’s full statement here.

(emphasis mine and every time I read one of the phrases I thought “Unless you are an unborn child”)

In a National Review Online article titled “Death by Privacy” Contributing Editor Mark R. Levin tells us

“Finally, Blackmun focused on his legal rationale in Roe. He began with a review of the right to privacy, writing, in part:

The Constitution does not explicitly mention any right of privacy. In a line of decisions, however…the Court has recognized that a right of personal privacy, or a guarantee of certain areas or zones of privacy, does exist under the Constitution. In varying contexts, the Court or individual Justices have, indeed, found at least the roots of that right in the First Amendment…in the Fourth and Fifth Amendments…in the penumbras of the Bill of Rights…in the Ninth Amendment…or in the concept of liberty guaranteed by the first section of the Fourteenth Amendment….These decisions make it clear that only personal rights that can be deemed “fundamental” or “implicit in the concept of ordered liberty”…are included in this guarantee of personal privacy. They also make it clear that the right has some extension to activities relating to marriage… procreation…contraception…family relationships…and child rearing and education….

Blackmun felt that the right of privacy, wherever it comes from, includes the right to abortion. Do not look any further for legal argument amidst the voluminous opinion, because it does not exist. Perhaps the extensive historical analysis was included to compensate for the lack of legal analysis.

But Blackmun went further, and the Court followed. Not satisfied to strike down the Texas law, Blackmun began to write what seemed to be a new federal statute. According to Blackmun’s opinion, a woman’s right to abortion could only be abridged by a compelling state interest. In effect, Blackmun argued that there was an inverse relationship between a woman’s interest and the state’s interest that ranged across a spectrum from conception to birth. Therefore, the state’s interest at conception was minimal but increased as the pregnancy progressed, reaching its peak at the end of the pregnancy. A woman’s interest, paramount at conception, began to give some ground to the state’s interest in protecting the fetus as it matured toward being able to live outside of the mother. But Blackmun specifically declared that the unborn child was not a “person” under the Fourteenth Amendment, and thus had no equal protection rights.”

During her confimation hearings Rupublicans asked Judge Sotomayor how she felt about the status of abortion in America.

“The court’s decision in Planned Parenthood vs. Casey reaffirmed the court holding of Roe. That is the precedent of the court and settled in terms of the holding of the court.”  - Sonya Sotamayor speaking before the Senate Judiciary Comittee during her confirmation hearings.

You cannot make immorality moral by court precedent or legislation. Abortion remains an evil, murderous thing whether or not the court and the legislative branch.

So in honor of Judge Sotomayor’s historic confirmation I am posting a video that puts a live face on the “private” act of abortion, and saying a prayer. I am prayng God will grant repentance in time to spare us from chastisment.

Now I will be joining the 40 days for life campaign this fall.

Now we’re wondering – because homeschoolers are a curious lot – how early can a baby walk?  Inquiring minds want to know.  Ours have ranged from 9-15 months when they began, but I have one sister, one brother, and at least 2 nieces who took off at 7 months.  Not just cruising or balancing in a semi-upright position, but really and truly walking.  Running, even.  Can you beat that?

I know how hard it is for lurkers to leave a real comment (hint, hint) so I’ve created 2 polls to make it easy for everyone to speak up, but be aware that if you claim your baby walked at 5 months I EXPECT A COMMENT OF EXPLANATION.   You can’t just toss out something amazing and leave us hanging like that.  We’ll go batty.   Can I hear a “yes, ma’am”?

Blue is my favorite color, it’s always seemed like a very magical color to me, partly because blue is the twilight color, right before dusk and right before dawn, the whole world turns blue for a few moments. Also blue is the color that is generally associated with good magic in fairy tales and suchlike. Blue is the normal color for a summer sky, and the shade of blue  on peacocks is one of the most beautiful in the world.

So, I wrote a poem about my favorite color.

Blue

Blue is for moonlight airy and sweet.

Blue for the ocean sinister, deep.

Blue is for sorrow, tears, and hard grieving.

Blue for the lonely, close friends are leaving.

Blue is the color for poets abounding,

soulful, or angry, sorrowful sounding.

A few days ago I told Rachael to take a bath.  She wandered off.

I told her again, but the bath still didn’t happen.

Finally, hubby cornered her on the deck.  He had that look in his eye.

“What did your mother tell you to do?”

Rachael thought fast.  “She said to take a bath, but I didn’t hear her!”

So far, so good, right?  No, but it doesn’t stop here.  It gets better.  Or worse, depending on where you’re standing.

Dad: “You didn’t hear?  Then how did you know?”

Rachael faltered briefly, then recovered.  “You just told me!”

She’s cute, but not that cute.  I don’t know if he managed to keep a straight face, but he sure tried hard.

Today hubby and I celebrated our 17th anniversary.  We met when we were 12 years old.  We were just 17 when we got engaged, and 19 when we were married.  Such a long time ago!

Our first child was baptized on our first anniversary, and our 7th was born on the 14th anniversary of our engagement.  Yes, I like to keep track of these things.

If you’re interested, our first child was born on my father-in-law’s 40th birthday.  Our 2nd was just 2 days from my own dad’s birthday.  Our 3rd was born on All Saint’s Day, the 4th on Memorial Day, the 5th was a millenium baby (1/1/2000), the 6th was born on a great-aunt’s birthday (hi, Aunt ‘Vonne!).  Sweet Sarah was born on Flag Day, and I already told you about #7.  The Boy, #8, was born on my mom’s birthday.

And #9 was born on her soon-to-be aunt’s birthday, just a few weeks before the wedding.  Yes, we welcomed Aunt Roxy into the family by having a baby on her birthday.  She kindly reciprocated by having a baby on one of our children’s birthdays.  If you read about how we met in the link above, you might like to know that the groom was hubby’s little brother who got a magnificent bloody nose so many years ago.  We still have it on video somewhere.  The bloody nose, that is.

But I digress.  I just wanted to make sure you all knew that I’m married to the sweetest and most handsome man in the world.  He’s strong as a bull, generous to a fault, hardworking, and the sight of the back of his neck still gives me shivers after all these years.

Sorry, y’all.  He’s taken.

Debbie left a comment on this post about frugal living that I’d like to share because it was very encouraging to me.  We are not crazy just because we don’t live the typical American-consumer lifestyle!

These are truly remarkable adjustments you have made.  The added bonus is that should we reach a point when we MUST live without these conveniences we take for granted, it will not be the same shock to  your family that it will to most.

I am currently visiting my son and family in Japan where the cost of living is through the roof and they are forced to be frugal.  Last month this family’s water bill alone was $300 – JUST WATER.  They think twice about long showers, extra laundry etc.  Power and propane fuel is unbelievably high.  I notice that they don’t dispense paper napkins, towels, etc. at home or in restaurants.  We have come to rely so much on disposable everything and we waste so much in overpackaging – another reason to do more from scratch.

In Japan, they carry their groceries to the car, bus or train in reusable containers because they have to pay extra for a plastic or paper bag.  Wouldn’t it be wise to start this before we  have to pay for the luxury?

My son does the laundry and he hangs the clothes, often strung in bedrooms, kitchen and anywhere they can mount a rod or hang a plastic hanger.  With lots of rain here, (and snow in winter in this part of Japan)  they often don’t have the option of hanging outside.  But, when they can there is plenty of support since everyone here is in the same boat – no snooty neighbors or ridiculous restrictive covenants that force unnecessary expenditures.

Where I live incineration is against the law due to air quality concerns.  I remember having these in the 50s and early 60s.  It really cuts down on garbage.  The local restrictions can make it hard at times but in this valley we do need to make changes for the good of the community.

You probably use ceiling fans.  I have installed these in two bedrooms as well as the living room and find them to be very helpful and cost very little.  (Be sure they are switched the right direction depending on the season).  How quickly we forget that we managed without A/C in the past – even in the car driving through the desert to Disneyland.  I have no doubt that some places are worse than others without A/C or central heating.  Here in northern Japan where climate is similar to Salt Lake where I live, only individual rooms are heated in winter when they are in use – thus the sliding walls and window coverings (paper, rice weave, bamboo, etc.).  The children are very good at knowing to keep the rooms closed to conserve the energy and not let heat escape in winter.  The same in summer but they only use A/C rarely in a single room.  They have also learned that huge homes are not “needs.”  There is much we could learn from different cultures.

I guess my suggestion is just to consider all we take for granted and realize much of it is habit; not necessity. (emphasis mine)

Frugal living is simply good stewardship in action, and is one of the ways we seek to honor God.  It won’t look the same in every family and household, but we all need to live within our means and make the most of the blessings God grants us.
