Deanna’s perspective:
For the past few days the weather has been cool. Not cold, which I would revel in just as much, but in the 60′s during the day, and 50′s at night.
I LOVE IT.
I love the hyperactive, mischievous feeling I get when it’s cool.
I love to play games at night that involve screaming and running.
I love huddling around a fire with my friends.
I love being able to wear long sleeves, jeans and my big, tall, cowboy boots without sweating.
I love being able to smell Christmas coming.
I love the new texture in the air, the halloween candy in the stores, and the dying leaves on the trees.
I love the crisp coolness in the air when I take a deep breath.
I love being able to sleep with a blanket and snuggle with our cat without suffocating.
I love hot cocoa in the morning.
I love wearing my denim jacket outside.
I love cooking hot and hearty soup for dinner.
I love the blue-grey smoke in the air as people take advantage of the chilly drizzle to burn over-ripe piles of brush.
I love the restless, wanderlust I get when it’s cool outside.
I love climbing the trees as they shed their leaves.
I love the the hazy, smoky, cold smell in the air as I lay on the trampoline listening to the deer, squirrels, and birds get ready for colder nights.
I love being comfortable in my flannel pj’s and my over-the-knee-length wool socks.
I love wandering alone in the woods.
I love how clingy and snuggly Bethie has gotten in the cold mornings.
I love how people have such different reactions to cooler weather.
I love arguing with them about the wonderfulness of cool weather.
I love making fun of the ones who hate, hate, hate cool weather.
I love the way the chilly drizzle makes my ears tingle.
I love acorn wars and marshmallow roasts.
I love gorging myself on Thanksgiving dinner.
I love hanging out on our deck with friends in the crisp night air.
I love the fact that God decided to give us so much variety in the weather, even in Texas.
Especially in Texas.
Mom’s perspective:
I hate cool weather. I’m cold. Do you know why we moved from Ohio to Texas? SO WE WOULDN’T HAVE TO BE COLD. That’s why God made Texas: so people wouldn’t have to be cold.
Yes, I know it’s beautiful and crisp and sparkly out there. It’s also cold out there. Close the door!
Who borrowed my fuzzy socks without asking? And why is my coat on the deck being using for a tent? Would somebody bring a cup of coffee?
No, you may not have cocoa for lunch. That’s not food and besides, that’s what you had for breakfast.
Where is Deanna? What do you mean she’s still out in the woods?
Go call her and close the door!
No, we DO NOT want it to snow this Christmas. It would also be nice if the pipes weren’t frozen this year on my birthday like they were the last 2 years. No, it wasn’t fun. You’re forgetting important parts, like how and where you went to the bathroom. No, I don’t know either. I forgot on purpose.
No, we’re not buying any more heaters. Put some socks on if you’re cold, and close the front door!
Yes, you can sleep in a blanket tent on the deck, but be forewarned: I’m locking the door. No, you may not have a space heater in your blanket tent. If your blanket tent is so airtight, you don’t need a heater, do you?
Hey, where’s that coffee I asked for? And why is the door open?!

Sorry, Mrs. Coghlan–but I’m with Deanna. I’m ecstatic that we’re FINALLY leaving Summer behind. (At least I enjoy it without sacrificing home duties, though…at least, I think I do…)
Love y’all.
~Hannah
We’re still rain soaked and in the 80s here in MS, but I understand a change is a-coming soon. I am excited!!
Oh, yeah, I’m with Deanna, too! October is my favorite month – the colors, the weather, the football…
(And, bring on the snow!)
I am torn between the 2 perspectives. I HATE THE COLD, but i like being able to broaden my wardrobe a bit. Mostly I HATE THE COLD!!!!
I wish a little of Texas’ cold would migrate east to us in NC! It’s still beastly warm and humid and I’m totally with Deanna, I looooove the cool. NOT the cold (I’m from MN) but the cool, definitely.
Loved the two perspectives though!
Deanna wins. No question. She hit the nail on the head in every respect!
Haha, so funny! I love fall weather! It hasn’t arrived everywhere in Texas, though. We have this humid, sticky grayness hanging over us here in southeast TX. It pretty much rains off and on all fall/winter, sigh.
I am SOOO with you on this, Mrs. C! I. HATE. THE. COLD! I am sitting here freezing and realizing I am SO NOT ready for the Indiana winter that is coming soon!
Deanna, I have to agree with you on how I love clingy and snuggly babies in the cold tho!
This was so funny. I’m with Deanna though. In West TX we are feeling the cooler temps right now but will be back in the high 80′s and maybe 90′s next week. Yuck, I’m so ready for fall and winter.
I agree with all Deanna said except the tree climbing part…too old to climb trees!

I LOVE Fall, too. I miss it so much since I now live in FL. We still have the air conditioning on and it is in the high 80s. Instead of saying “there is frost on the pumpkin” down here I say “there is mold on the pumpkin!” lol
Go Deanna! I’m with you ALL the way. Autumn and winter are my favorite seasons. Poor, Mrs. C, you had to move away from Ohio and miss this beautiful weather we are having. But it sounds like you are getting a good dose of it.

I love the heat, too, though I do like seasons. Living in Hawaii, Arizona the Florida, snow is something that we only encounter on vacations, which makes it even more enjoyable. I’m ready for the Florida winter, which means that the most productive season for our garden is coming up! Also, if this pregnancy goes well it means that I won’t have to spend the summer pregnant; baby can warm me from inside on those chilly evenings and be born in time to spend the summer wearing only a diaper- a double plus since he or she won’t need clothes for awhile
My favorite season is fall. I love to be able to wear sweatshirts. if only it didn’t get so cold here. Speaking of cold, last winter I taught in a trailer and had a horrible time with pipes freezing. What we did to get them not to freeze was when it was supposed to get near freezing (especially at night) leave a tiny trickle of water go down the drain. This will keep the pipes from freezing even in the coldest of weather. I hope this helps you have working pipes on your birthday!
I also Looooove… cool weather. I’m in Herndon, kentucky (a small Amish community) and it is harvest time here. I bid good-bye to the miles of corn, soon I will be able to see the neighbors houses again. It’s also time for dark-fired tobacco and they are filling the air with hickory smoke. It’s just a wonderful time of the year, the hard work and the heat of summer being over.
I really enjoyed Deanna’s perspective on Fall….
And I laughed hard at your perspective!!
Fall is my favorite season, hands down. I wait for it all year! One of the reasons I like Washington is the clear and distinct changing of the seasons. In CA, at least in Orange County, I never even knew there WERE seasons!!!
It was a neat post!
I am so with Deanna on this one. This my favorite time of year. She described it so beautifully although I don’t climb trees and frown upon acorn wars. And I will definitely be keeping that from my children. My 8 yod would side with you. He loves summer. Enjoy the remaining heat. Change is a comin’.
Karen
It gets cold in Texas? Texas doesn’t believe in global warming, then…???
I love fall! Deanna’s comments were great. Gotta go with her on this one. I love pulling out the sweatshirts and fuzzy socks.
Does it get cold enough in Texas to need heaters? You aren’t saying 50 degrees is cold, right?! Hey, that’s still shorts weather around here! It’s not “cold” till it’s below zero in northern ND!
Having lived in Alaska I LOVE the new “cold” feeling here in Texas. Fall is now my favorite season and I’m with Deanna all the way. It was a fresh of breath air to read her post. I could smell the burning leaf/brush piles. Ahhhh…….
Agreeing 100% with Deanna!! Life would be so boring without the change of seasons. Cool weather is the best! And really hot weather is horrible–it sucks the energy right out of you.
What was so self-sacrificing about doing without air-conditioning to save money this summer if you love the heat so much, Kim?
Lisa Beth,
You’re right. There was far greater sacrifice on the part of other family members than my own. My sacrifice mostly involved graciously tolerating the whining of certain cold-loving individuals.
I’m usually a lurker here, but I just had to pop in to say, I love this post! Deanna, I agree with you! We’re in Oregon, so it doesn’t really get cold here (not the below freezing temperatures I had growing up in the Midwest), although after living here 7 years my body is starting to think our cool wet winters are really cold. I guess it’s all a matter of perspective. But I love the cool crisp air Autumn brings! So much so that we named our cat Autumn!
Although that also has to do with the fact she’s a tortie and has autumn colors sprinkled throughout her fur. Anyway, I just have to say, I love the crisp cool air Autumn brings, along with the wonderful smells! Thanks for your post!
I HATE snow, and really cold, but I do love fall weather. It just seems so crisp now and you can take a deep breath of fresh air. I live in PA so this is just great for me, not yet unbearably cold, and foot of snow or more, but also not hot and buggy!
Thanks for making me laugh though. I enjoy reading your posts.
Deanna, you just described my childhood in Texas! I love the cold weather! And, Kim, you sound just like me! Especially regarding the coffee and “no more heaters” comments. I rarely run the heat in our house because it gives everyone a terrible sinus infection.
I love Autumn! I even have a daughter named Autumn. It is my favorite time of year! Thanks for posting, ladies! It always brings a smile to my face to read your words!
