Due date

Since I've posted before about the fun of doubling up on birthdays and holidays, I'm tickled to announce that the newest baby is due to arrive on or around May 25, Megan's birthday.

aw, man.  JenH is right - my duedate doesn't line up.  I just refigured it with a calendar this time and I came up with June 4.  Sorry, Meg.  no birthday buddy.

I'm just over 5 weeks now with just the mildest signs of morning sickness.  Usually I'm throwing up by now, but that part of the fun didn't start until 7 weeks with Bethany, so maybe I have time.  In the meantime, I'm eating a bowl of beans every day in the hopes that there's really some science behind this theory.

I wouldn't mind hearing your favorite morning sickness remedy so I'll have a new arsenal ready when it hits this time.  In the past, I've tried nearly everything.  While none stopped me from throwing up daily, some did take the edge off of the misery.  I found that many were somewhat effective for just a little while, then I had to switch things up.

The ones that worked best for me:

  • Cinnamon Altoids, very strong and not too sweet
  • Lemon juice, straight from the bottle.  A tablespoon or two really settled my stomach.
  • Tonic water, again just a swallow or two.
  • Small, high protein meals right after throwing up.
  • Fasting for the morning when I would undoubtedly have thrown up anything that passed my lips.  Sounds crazy, but it made me feel much better!
  • Distraction.  Even though I don't always feel like it, I have always found that if I get out of the house and stay active, nausea tends to stay in the background.

What are your top 5?  Yes, I did list 6.  What's your point?

  1. Congratulations from the Seargeants!

You’ll just have to keep having babies for our children to hold since it appears we are probably past that stage of life now….sniff…sniff… I know the children are thrilled! : )

    1. Hard candies to suck on.
    2. Ginger snaps to nibble on.
    3. Staying away from any smell of anything.
    4. Tiny snacks throughout the day instead of meals.
    5. Milk Thistle – it keeps the liver cleansed so your liver can process the abundance of hormones.

  2. The couple of things that really seemed to help me were:
    1. Very regular snacks that balanced both protein and carbs-whole wheat bagel with cream cheese, apples and crackers with peanut butter, etc.
    2. Hard candies to suck on. It never really mattered what kind–I like Jolly Ranchers, and those always worked well.

    Congratulations!

  3. My best trick to keep me from having to run out of church every Sunday morning has been to keep a roll of Sweet Tarts tucked in my purse. Any time I felt that slight feeling I would pop one in and suck on it. For me, the sour/tart taste would keep me from getting sick. Other sour things helped, too, but Sweet Tarts were by far the best.

On a regular basis, I found that if I let my stomach get too empty I would get sick. If I kept food in me all the time, I was mostly fine.

Also, peppermint. I like strong peppermint tea, the hard candies and even sometimes chewing minty gum would help.

  4. Two things that helped me.

    1. Lay off the chocolate for a while! I know that is sooo hard – but the thing in chocolate that makes you relax also causes your sphincter muscle between your esophogus and your stomach to relax and causes nausea.

    2. Vitamin B12 – it helps.

    Congratulations again!

  5. Congratulations Kim…. wishing you strength and a cast iron stomache against the morning sickness.

  6. Hmmm… I think you are over 6 weeks. I’m due May 31st and 5 weeks, 4 days.

With DS1, the thing that worked best was jelly beans. With DS2 it was ramen soup.
How healthy of me but it was that or nothing. Once I felt I could keep down something for a bit I ate a lot of egg drop soup, wonton soup, mashed potatoes and with DS1 bean and cheese tacos.

    Good Luck to you!

  7. With my non-twin pregancy’s
    Eating nothing till 11 am
If I felt like ya know I woul whip open a bottle of essential oil (for some reaso citrus or lemon or just orange worked good)
Hoping in the shower (and yes it was a waist of water but if I didn’t have to ya now then I waisted away)

For the twin preggos (2 and I have half of the first set and both of the second set.

I got hit literally at implantation with horrific morning sickness 24/7

The high risk OB said something salty and sweat so for me gasp pop and lays regular or fench fries. And I was on the diclecton and another anti nausea med for the durration of my last(full set) twin pregnancy it never went away.
Hope you find something that works!!!!

  8. Kim, I had morning sickness so badly with my last one, for 5 months, that I had to be on medication! I recently discovered a sports drink that I want to try the next time I’m prego. It’s healthier and less sweet than gatorade (I had some success with sports drinks and vitamin water). It’s called “Ultima replenisher”. You can check it out in their website: http://www.ultimareplenisher.com. Bless you!

  9. 1. Peppermint essential oils. The aromatherapy helped a lot!

    2. Plain saltine crackers

    3. Rootbeer

    4. SMALL meals more often!

  10. 1. Coke with the fizz stirred out
    2. Weak black tea with milk and sugar
    3. Cinnamon-sugar toast
    4. Spirit gum in citrus (orange pack)
    5. Smelling ground coffee (I don’t know why this worked, it just did).

  11. Congratulations!!

Sour candy was the ticket for me. Oh, and I also discovered soda water to help me feel a lot better.

  12. I was another sour candy fan. I also kept burt’s bee’s lemon cuticle balm in my purse and pulled that out to sniff when I needed to go into the grocery store. My oddest thing was that cherry cough drops helped quite a bit- something about the menthol mixed with a touch of sugar. Anyway, when I hit the stage where I knew I would feel better if I could just eat but nothing appealed, I would eat air popped popcorn with a bit of salt, butter, and nutritional yeast. The combination of the fiber, fat, and protein of the nutritional yeast tended to get me over the hump.

  13. Hello Kim,

Congratulations!! I may be expecting too. Maybe it’s in the water…except that I am in PA.
A friend of mine had miserable sickness when she was pregnant, three of her four. Before her last baby, she had a bout of gall stones. Then she got pregnant with #4. She had almost no sickness at all that time. So maybe it would be worth checking. They told her that her misery may have been from gall stones the whole time, but without baby pressure, she just didn’t know it.
    God Bless!!

  14. Hey! Congratulations! I think the thing that helped me the very most was to eat a light meal with protein just before bed (usually in bed) so that I was not starving when I woke up. The hardest part about that was that I didn’t want to actually taste anything so my dh would just make something and bring it to me. It helped with that true “morning” sickness.

The other help was not to get in the car with someone else driving, that was sure to set me off everytime (too bad I couldn’t always avoid it, then I would suck on sour candy).

  15. HERE IS A CURE….works on morning sickness, motion sickness the stomach flu AND food poisoning (I know PERSONALLY and is safe for all ages including nursing or pregnant moms as I have used it on myself and toddlers)

Boil water, add honey and ground ginger. Stir and drink. I would add about two table spoons of honey and about a teaspoon of ginger to HUGE (jar sized) glass when very, very morning sick. This works with in MINUTES and lasts hours. At my worst I only had to drink it several times a day and usually only twice.

Gave to my toddlers when they were about to throw up with stomach flu (and had been) and it stopped it instantly. Same with food poisoning.

You can adjust amounts to suit you. Sometimes too much ginger can be hot. Sometimes I added MORE ginger if I was really, really sick and needed it to work fast.

Candy and all the other stuff never cured me, just helped me survive. This will CURE you!

    Many Blessings :)

  16. I second the Milk Thistle. Shonda Parker says in her book that morning sickness might be contributed to the overload of the liver. I have been taking it over the past several weeks to increase my milk supply to get to November nursing my 10 mod. So it hasn’t helped though. LOL!!

I keep the Spearmint or Peppermint Altoids on hand. I also can’t imagine not eating anything until later in the morning. URGH!!! I wake up famished. I think I also have blood sugar issues (hypoglycemia – I think) so I get really sick with low blood sugar. If I even let my tummy empty out I will for sure get very light headed and then for certain be very nauseous.

I think I am do May 20th. I don’t know when I ovulated and I skipped my previous cycle and wasn’t pg. My oldest will finally have her birthday buddy though. We consider someone a birthday buddy if they fall within 3-4 weeks of another persons birthday. My 3 boys have birthdays from Jan 19th through Feb 14. My two younger girls are Oct 24 and Nov 11. Now the long awaited spring baby will come along. My oldest is ecstatic. So maybe there is still hope for Meg to have her birthday buddy. You just might have to redefine what buddy means.

  17. Just a theory i heard about, but candied ginger. I never found the cure…tried the beans….no luck…. ;)

  18. 1. Lemonheads candy
    2. Dr. Bronners Peppermint soap–I would lather up to my neck in the morning, and it seemed to help.
    3. Holding my hands under the cold water faucet.
    4. Going to bed early or on time, staying up late made me sick.
    5. Think about holding a little baby in a few months :)

  19. Those motion sickness pressure-point bands! Seriously! I wore them 24/7 around 7 weeks of pregnancy and they totally helped. They’re available at drugstores.

Be sure to get them on the right location of your wrist. Should be directions inside.

  20. Ditto for the motion sickness wrist bands! I found them to work wonderfully! I also found out quite by accident, due to a sore throat, that slippery elm lozenges (they are available in several flavors!) work well too!
    Blessings to you & family

  21. I also agree with the motion sick bands. I’m not sure how or why they work, but those were the only things that helped me. It would at least take the edge off. And yes, do you need to be sure to get them on correctly. Good luck finding something! :)

  22. About five or six plain, salted saltine crackers as soon as you wake up – before you get out of bed. It always seems to do it for me!

  23. Congratulations! :D

Hmmm… lets see… I found that the only thing that helped my morning sickness was when I had been throwing up for days and could no longer move off the bathroom floor of my own accord, my dear husband carried me to the car and took me in to get poked uselessly with an IV that would not find a vein and eventually wind up being given a shot and then put on prescription pills to keep the nausea away so I wouldn’t die of dehydration.

Okay so there was one other thing that actually helped. Morning Wellness Tea by Earth Mama Angel Baby! I was actually able to wean myself off the prescription using that tea.

And one more thing I am certain would have helped is if I had a gas mask to wear when frying red meat. ;) I just could not stand the smell of cooking meat!

  24. Ginger! Either nibble on some crystallized ginger, get the ginger chews (at central market or whole foods) from the ginger people, or a really strong ginger ale (jamaican style).

  25. totally of topic here but how old Is Bethany? Are you still able to nurse while pregnant? Just curious I wasn’t sure if a womans milk dried up or changed while being pregnant.

  26. maryjo,
Bethany is 15 months now. She’s still nursing but not a whole lot. I’ll probably wean her gradually over the next few weeks, though I have found with some pregnancies that nursing the previous baby helped a bit with morning sickness.
I’ve heard that pregnancy can change the taste and quantity of a woman’s milk, so it’s not uncommon for babies to wean themselves if mama gets pregnant.

  27. 1. Bentonite Clay Powder: 1 tsp in 8 oz of water. Drink it before bedtime. It is safe to take before/during/after pregnancy and is a de-tox. Can be purchased at any health food store or ordered online at: bulkherbstore.com.

    2. 3 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil mixed with a little olive oil in your palm and rubbed on/around navel when morning sickness hits.

    3. Milk Thistle.

    4. Vitamin B6

    5. Salmon steak for breakfast. I ate this every other morning. Make sure it’s Alaskan wild (limited heavy metal exposure). I buy it in a 4 pack at Wal-mart for around $4.00

I hope you find relief this time. Morning sickness is no fun! I will say though that two of the four babies that I miscarried I suffered no morning sickness whatsoever. I had it with all ten babies that I delivered, so I’ve come to view it as a positive sign. Congratulations!

  28. Just wanted to add one more thing since I see a lot of people recommending peppermint….mints dry up your milk supply. It is never good to take them in any form (and be VERY careful using the ANY essential oil when preggo) while nursing.

I do use the pepperming Dr. Bronners and didn’t see it do anything….

    Many Blessings :)

  29. Many of the remedies I have tried made me sicker rather than better (ginger candy, for example.)

The only one that really worked was sniffing a lemon when nausea started to hit. I even kept one in my purse and didn’t care who saw me with a lemon practically shoved up my nose for 20-30 seconds at a time.

Frozen Coke’s, Icee’s, Slurpies, not sure what they call them in your area, also seemed to help at times.

  30. My friend swore by chewing on ginger or at least taking ginger pills.

  31. I am usually sick all day until week 18, then just in the evening or when I’m tired or when I smell something I don’t like…
Anyway, not until after baby #4 did we find this: take half a Unisom at bedtime. It really, really helped. I still felt badly, but it was managable. I could think. I could do somethings in the mornings. I felt like I was going to live. Sorry if that sounds pathetic, but I really was sick. I’ve since started taking the half a Unisom as soon as the queasiness starts and the last two pregnancies I only threw up three-four times each. That’s a miracle in my book.

Anyway, that’s the only thing that helped. You name it and I tried it with the other pregnancies.

    Congrats!!

Here’s to hoping the LORD leads you to something.

  32. Just as an FYI for those who might think I didn’t really try (yes, I have people pleasing issues), here’s what I tried in the previous four pregnancies to no avail (meaning I kept throwing up):
    amino acids
    chloryphyll
    B vitamins
    eating frequently (this does help)
    ginger
    ginger pops, ginger soda
    crackers in bed
    almonds
    protein balls (a specific recipe)
    raspberry (tea, capsules)
    lemon in my water

Feel free to try these, they may help you!

  33. I’ve not been pregnant before but I have known mamas who have been through awful morning sickness! Ginger (in any form), peppermint or fennel teas and eating little and often (things like dry toast are good) are what I recommend.

  34. Congratulation, Kim! Sounds like you’re all geared up for the morning sickness. Good luck with that.

  35. My mom’s greatest relief came from taking Milk thistle supplements as a liver cleanser in her last couple of pregnancies. It helps your body process the hormones so they do not build up and make you feel toxic:)

I know she like to eat ginger snaps with one of the boys. She hated the smell of raw meat or cooking ground beef.

Other than that, I remember her being out of commission on the couch with several quick sprints to the nearest sink or bathroom every day for months on end.

I’m sure you can imagine that I pray fervently that I don’t get sick with any of my pregnancies….Lord willing. And I’ll be praying for you as well.

Love and prayers to you both,

    Ashley

  36. Congratulations to you and your family!

I get really sick during pregnancies, and actually threw up until two weeks before my daughter was born. Some things that helped me were:
-sea bands wrist bands–at the beginning, helped me distinguish nausea from hunger
-Dr. Bronner’s peppermint soap on my hands to sniff when I smelled something gross
    -lemon sour candies
-eating something a little sweet first thing in the morning so it is more pleasant when it comes right back up–my favorite were cold apple slices. I’d eat three or four in bed in the morning and then throw them up shortly after. Better than dry heaving and better than water that brings up all that bile. Sorry, I’m probably making you gag by just typing that.

  37. Well-seasoned food helps me. I really like Italian and Mexican food those first few months. Bland food doesn’t sit well.

Lemonade with lots of crushed ice in it along with some potato chips (on the side–not in the lemonade) is also good.

  38. My only tip- have a mom who never had morning sickness. Not that it’ll help you at this point, but it’s been great for me.

I’m due May 31, but I’m trying not to think about it too much yet as my last ended in miscarriage at 11 weeks; if I’m 6 weeks now then you’re 5 weeks? This time around I’m not going to make any plans until after I hear the heartbeat at the midwives’ appointment, and I don’t think I’ll even make that appointment for another couple of weeks, since they want the first visit to occur between 10-12 weeks.

You might want to try some homemade ginger beer (non-alcoholic). I hear, though, that if a woman has relied on only one method for anti-nausea for a pregnancy, that the remedy used will forever be tied to the memory of nausea and therefore never work again for subsequent pregnancies. Any truth to that, mamas?

  39. I don’t have kids so I don’t know about morning sickness, but I did have a digestive disorder for a while which caused severe chronic nausea. Here is what helped me.

    1. Jolly Ranchers which I saw someone else put, I would echo that these are helpful.
    2. Ginger hard candies which are called “Gin Gins” are a huge staple in my life.
    3. Distraction which I would again reiterate was a huge help.
    4. Toast is about the only thing I can eat when hit with a nausea episode. I eat it without butter, the crunchier the better.
    5. This might sound weird but keeping my sinuses cleared with either sudafed or saline rinse helps a lot too.
    6. Sucking on a tums tablet (not chewing it). The powdery chalkiness helps me.

There are more things that I do but those are the ones I usually go to first.

  40. Congratulations! We will be praying for a healthy pregnancy and a safe delivery!
I have had three kids and morning sickness with each, so here is my list:
    1. I would always get really sick after my first food of the day, no matter what time I ate. So I started to wake up extra early and eat a little bit, get sick (in peace!), and if need be go back and lay down for 10-30 min. I was usually past the worst if it by the time the kids got up, so I could take care of them.
    2. Eat lots of crackers and nibble at healthy food all day long.
    3. Stay busy.
    4. Take vitamins with lunch or dinner and a non-water drink.
    5. The worst morning sickness I ever had turned out to be a dairy intolerance. I was horribly (curled up on the floor while my toddlers played next to me) sick for four months before my mid-wife suggested cutting out all dairy. The sickness was totally gone by the end of the week! I had to avoid dairy for the rest of the pregnancy and some of the nursing, but this was much better than being sick all the time!

  41. Oh, two more that really helped were no caffeine (this helped with heartburn too) and herbal hot tea. Good luck!

  42. Those apple altoids worked pretty well for me. Also, Preggo Pops make a cough drop type pop that worked pretty well. It was also apple flavored.

The biggest thing for me was avoiding the thought of anything gross. Weird, I know, but if I had a gross thought during pregnancy, I would instantly throw up.

  43. Good luck with the pregnancy! I heartily second the Unisom suggestion, especially in combination with B6. I was losing rather than gaining weight until my OB told me about it. I still threw up once or twice a day into the second trimester, but I avoided hospitalization for dehydration, although there were still a few days when I suspect that my husband would have felt better if I’d let him take me in. Next time, however, if I’m that sick again, I’m asking for the good stuff: better living through modern pharmacology.

  44. Cheez-its were the ONLY thing I could eat before about 4 pm until I was 11 weeks…

  45. I was searching for a remedy for coughs using clove & found this..I haven’t tried it but thought I’d pass it on.

‘A pregnant woman stops vomiting if the water in which cloves were boiled is taken by her.’

  46. Congrats Kim!

I’m 12 weeks and have been slammed with all day sickness! As mentioned by others I have found cinnamon discs and peppermints to be helpful in the a.m. and when I’m out and about. Also, my doctor recommended these things called Sea Bands. They are bands that you wear around your wrists and they put pressure on a pressure point that helps with motion sickness. I think that they have been helpful and have kept me from taking medication or maybe it’s just psychological:)

  47. Vitamin B6 – total miracle worker

  48. My 5 year old was born on May 25th and his due date was June 8th. Megan could still get a birthday baby.

  49. A friend and I were just speaking of this today…she was so very ill she had to have B vitamin shots throughout her pregnancies. I want to say B6…but someone above said B12…maybe a B deficiency makes it worse.
With my twin girls having crackers next to the bed helped, I remember lemon drops too. It wasn’t morning sickness though, it was all day. For all pregnancies I always had snacks in my purse…like peanut butter crackers. If my stomach became too empty it made it worse.

  50. I second the ginger candy thing people have said, I like Chimes Ginger candies, I got them at world market

  51. Sounds like there’s a lot of Mama-to-be’s all about the same time! I’m pregnant with our first and due on June 1st (so, six weeks today). No sickness yet aside from some mild nausea when I get up in the morning but taking note of all the hints from you experienced ladies!

I haven’t a thing to add to the lists already posted – they’re all the things that the women around me have shared with me also. Congrats to you for the wonderful news!

  52. CONGRATULATIONS!!! Praise the Lord for His goodness to you!

Morning sickness – I was blessed not to have it badly, but I DID have nausea and wished I could have thrown up several times. During those times, peppermint candy, lying on my left side and sipping cold water in front of a fan helped. I stayed out of the kitchen as much as possible, and basically just ate frequently with high-protein and fruit. Red raspberry leaf tea helped also – sweetened with honey. I think it provided all those trace minerals.

    Blessings! :-)

  53. It took me 3 babies to realize that my morning sickness was due to changes in my blood sugar levels, so eating low GI foods and avoiding sugars (yes, chocolate too!) helped tremendously!

  54. Well, with this baby, the only thing that helped me at all was Zofran. Boy, oh boy, was I ever thankful for that prescription. I’d gotten to the point where nothing would stay down at all, and it made me feel human again. I tried ginger in all forms, legumes, B6, hard candy, protein, saltines, even Phenergan, all to no avail.

I took as little Zofran as I could, one tiny tablet/day and eventually 1/2 tablet/day until around 20 weeks. Baby is big, strong, and healthy now at 39 weeks, 2 days. Can’t wait to meet her!

  55. Congratulations again! Maybe the morning sickness won’t be as bad this time? (One can always hope, right?)

A couple of things that helped me:

    1. Keeping food in my stomach, if at all possible, and keeping blood sugar levels stable as another poster mentioned.

    2. Baking soda – 1/4 tsp. in a glass of water. A very nice older lady told me this when I complained about horrible, unrelenting heartburn and nausea with #3 AND IT WORKED.

Wishing you a healthy happy pregnancy!

  56. Your baby is due on my birthday! That’s so cool! Our little one is due March 7th, the day after my sister’s birthday!
    ~Jesus bless~

  57. My #1 is grapefruits. Cold grapefruit. I would fresh squeeze the juice and drink that when I didn’t feel like I could eat anything. It didn’t keep me from throwing up but it helped.
I tried the beans with my current pregnancy (15 weeks along) and they defiantly helped with the nausea but I had so much indigestion and bloating and gas that I could keep eating them. Hopefully it works better for you.

  58. well that’s cool!
my mom having a baby too!

  59. First off, congratulations!

As to morning sickness…I kept something salty on the night table. (saltines worked great). I had a nibble first thing when I woke up, before I even sat up or tried to get out of bed.

I also avoided strong odors…canned tuna and canned cat food in particular.

That’s it for me…I’m low on tips today,

Looking forward to following your pregnancy as you add a new blessing to your family!

  60. I haven’t read all your comments, so forgive me if I am repeating anything suggested :) . I am expecting my 9th baby. I am usually have all day and all night “morning sickness” (throwing up, dehydrating…the whole deal). This time I took a sublingual vitamin B complex faithfully. It is the Ultra B12 NOW brand, and was a life saver for me. I was still sick, but found I felt I was actually surviving this time around. I only threw up a few times, opposed to the constant in past pregnancies.

Congratulations!!!!!!!!! I am rejoicing with you!

  61. Kim, although only mentioned once, i second the idea of Zofran. i’m taking it for the first time during my 8th pregnancy and i wish i’d known about it earlier. i understand those who don’t want to take any meds while pregnant but i’m choosing to trust my experienced md and just be thankful! i haven’t even taken the max dose- one pill a day instead of three is working for me. yahoo!!

  62. With my youngest, I would get sicker in the evening. So, I would eat a hunk of Extra Sharp Cheese and then go to bed early. I don’t know what it was about the cheese, but it saved me from on the verge of throwing up. I hate throwing up, so I tried to avoid it at all cost. Congratulations!

  63. Cheerios! I practically lived off them with my first baby, and now that I am being slammed again with all day sickness (I’m about five weeks along too!) , I have found that keeping a handful of Cheerios near by helps to keep my stomach settled. I also found relief from many of the previous suggestions such as sucking on hard candy, smelling the scent of lemon, and sipping on ginger ale.

    Congrats!!

  64. There is hope for Megan…My baby sister (who is now a year and almost 5 months old) was due at the beginning of June, and she was born May 24th. So I finally had someone else with me in May after waiting for NINETEEN YEARS…(my birthday is the 18th of May).

    So it could be possible…

  65. I hate to say that with all 7 of my kids I never had morning sickness. THE MOST I HAD WAS A QUEASY STOMACH AND DRY TOAST AND TEA WITH SUGAR AND MILK WORKED FOR THAT.
