superbrite pink bmprd sm Review: Bummis!Isn’t it cute?  Ours looks just like this, and the print made us coo and squeal when it arrived.  Even Bethany was pleased, patting her diaper all day to remind us that the cover was new and pretty.  We have plenty of simple, respectable diaper covers that do a perfectly adequate job, but the cute ones like this really make cloth diapering a pleasure!

We found our Bummis covers to be simple, well-designed, and effective.  We had no leakage problems.  They have gusseted legs, which I think are essential with prefolds.  They have laundry tabs, which we all should learn to use consistently.

I love the nifty crossover feature, which stretches the sizing by allowing you to cross the velcro tabs over each other.  Obvious and ingenious!

Based on name-brand recognition, I assumed that Bummis were the best and most expensive cover on the market.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that their prices are very moderate.totebag group hanging bmprd lf Review: Bummis!

We also got a beautiful wet bag to hold used diapers and wet clothes.  When not in use, it takes very little room inside the diaper bag.  Once it begins to fill up, we can use the snap-strap to attach it to the outside of the diaper bag.  The triple seams and zipper closure keep odor, wetness and mess safely inside, and bag itself can be dropped right into the washer along with the contents.  For the first time in my married life, I am not using all the grocery sacks that come home with groceries.  I just might switch to reusable grocery sacks, a greener habit than I ever expected of myself.

But in spite of the solid quality, features and sheer cuteness of their products, where Bummis really shines is customer service!  I was committed to using cloth diapers but getting discouraged by our persistent stinky problem.  Even after several washes and rinses, even with plenty of sunning, my diapers still stunk.   The ladies at Bummis picked up on this and volunteered their time to help me find the problem.  They asked questions, offered advice, sent free PDFs on the subject, and persisted until we found the problem.  They are committed to helping their customers and making cloth diapering a pleasure.  This takes more than a cute cover, and they are willing to put out the effort.

disclosure: If you must know, I received these products free for review.  I requested them myself, because I really wanted them.  icon smile Review: Bummis!

  1. Trying this again :)

What caused your stinky problem? We quit cloth diapering at the 4.5 month mark because of stinkies that nothing we did seemed to take care of. (And we weren’t buying new diapers at that point!)

As for reusable bags — I like the look of the Flip & Tumble bags, but not the price. Wal-mart has something similar for $2 and I’ll take the logo for the price difference.

How do you get companies to give you free stuff like the super Niiiice digital camera? You are a famous blogger and somehow they know this and so you get perks? I was just curious and like the seretonin rush I get from a “good deal” or better yet, a FREE deal.

  3. Shanna :

I LOVE Bummis!!! I switched over to Thirsties (since we were needing larger sizes) with your last review but wish now I would have stayed with my tried and true.

Cant wait to buy more!! What I would really like it is to learn how to knit and make some wool soakers. Maybe one day…

  4. Lisa :

If you wash with real detergent you will not have stinky diapers.

  5. kerri :

    Aww, those are so cool.
There is something satisfying about cloth diapering that is hard to explain. But those covers make it a bit easier! :)

  6. kimc :

    My Boaz’s Ruth,
Our problem was a combination of homemade laundry detergent and super hard water. It was leaving a residue on the diapers that prevented them from getting really clean. We switched back to Charlie’s Soap and changed our wash routine slightly and now have very little trouble at all!

    Sheila,
The camera was a complete surprise and blessing! I couldn’t begin to tell you how it happened, and I don’t expect it to happen again.
But if you have a blog with a fair amount of traffic, you can often request and receive items for review – just aim at a reasonable price range and make sure you follow through on the review.

    Shanna,
Why do you prefer Bummis over Thirsties? I’ve noticed very little difference in actual usage. I do think the patterns are cuter and customer service is spectacular, but I love them both!

  7. Why wasn’t there these cute products in my baby days? When I have grandchildren, I’m going to buy stuff like this.

Kim, I came by way of ProBlogger, and the comment you left. After writing my feelings on his most recent post, I read yours and we feel the same way. I’m witty, funny and outgoing on my blog, and quiet in person–esp with strangers. When someone I know says, “yah, I read___ on your blog” I feel like I hit a brick wall, forgetting people in my city read my blog and become sorry I shared my feelings on something. It’s not that I said anything I shouldn’t have–it’s just that I don’t like people knowing what’s inside my head. KWIM?

Anyways, have a great day. Good luck with your success.

  8. Love Bummis! I only have the small size and have used them through 2 kids. Question: do you pin your prefolds or do you just fold it into thirds and put it inside the wrap? Just curious. I just did the fold thing easier but when they are babies the covers tend to get soiled easier. We tend to switch over to a pocket diaper (fuzzi bunz before, bumGenius this time) because hubby likes the ease of a pocket diaper and they are slimmer. glad you enjoy doing cloth like I do. And the savings is an added bonus!

  9. Vicki :

Bummis are awesome! I love the super whisper wrap line because they are pretty durable. We’ve one or two diaper covers that have lasted now through 3 kids!

  10. KimC :

    Slawebb,
We used to just fold our diapers and lay in the covers, but I found that they slid around too much and leaked more often. Now we use a snappi instead of pins – safe and easy, even for the kids, and the diaper never moves!

  11. Shanna :

    Kim,

I have found that my little ones soak through the Thirsties. I also don’t find the Thirsties to be as durable as Bummis. Though, I know everyone has their favorite and whatever makes us happy when we change a diaper is what really matters.

  12. KimC :

    Beth,
I know what you mean, just a little. I don’t mind that my friends and
family read our blog, but I often feel awkward about telling them what’s
going on in our home or cute things that the kids did because I have to
interrupt my self to ask, “Wait, did you already read this on our blog?” I
feel like one of those people who tells the same stories over and over again
but it’s not my fault because they read it on my blog. Or I go to the
opposite extreme and don’t tell loved ones the things that are going on in
our family because I wrongly assume they already know from our blog.
Awkward, yes. But I love blogging, and I love the friends that I meet that
    way. It’s worth it.

  13. Amy :

    Hi everyone,
We are new to even thinking about cloth diapers (despite 5 children, oh all the money!!!). But we are expecting twins this Jan and with one still in diapers we have decided to “seriously” look into them. I’m very interested in something that makes it easier for myself, my husband, my daughter and occasionally my 10 year old son to change and wash diapers. My hubby’s worried about the mess, the smell, and getting them clean without making laundry a bigger issue than it is currently.
I sure would appreciate any input because I know $60+/month is not in the budget for disposables!!!
    Thanks!!!
    Amy

      Amy,
I think prefolds and covers are the cheapest and most durable option, but if you’re looking for an easy switch and plan to have children of varying sizes in diapers, you might want to consider investing in something like this. No need for various sizes – one big stash will do for all 3 of your children, and they’re easy to use for people accustomed to disposables. If you’re satisfied with the inexpensive Chinese version, they’re really quite affordable.

  14. Karen :

OH, I miss bummis. When I bought diapers last time I was on a serious budget. I went with proraps instead. They are OK. My favorite bummis were the snaps. They seemed to fit my children so much better. I also miss my cloth diapers. I am on bedrest and to make things easier for my dh we went back to paper diapers. <> I miss the puffy baby bum.

  15. Susan :

We use cloth diapers by SunSeedlings and I love them. We occasionally use disposables, and when we do, invariably at least one of the older kids will say, “Oh she feels so cute!” when they’re holding their baby sister. They like the feel of the less bulky bottom that comes with disposables.

  16. Sheila :

Still a Thirsties lover (just got the new Duo Wrap for our newest blessing, who should be here by now!)
I, too, was curious about stinky-ness. I used a wet pail with the last baby, and we didn’t have any issues. But, I’m switching over to a dry pail this time, and I fear the smell.
The Bummis wet bag has really piqued my interest! I’ll have to look into that…
Blessings! Hope you’re keeping your nausea under control. :)
    Sheila,
    Happy housewife to Phil and
    Mama to almost six!
