My midwife asked me to keep a food log for her. She wants complete records for everything I eat for 5 days, though not necessarily consecutive days. She was a little amused when I pointed out that there was only room for 3 meals and 4 snacks each day. I guess I can use the back of the sheet.
Today seems like a good time to start because my chocolate stash is gone. Well, except for the last bit of Starbucks Java Chip ice cream. Oh, and that Hershey’s bar I bought for hubby’s lunch a looooong time ago. I keep forgetting to put it in the bag, and today I saw it peeking out of a basket on top of my dresser. er…hi, hunney…I love you…
Just because I’m such a terribly interesting person, I’m going to share it here. Actually, I’m going to keep track here because it’s a plausible excuse to be on the computer. Not that I generally wait for an excuse, but it’s always nice when one is offered.
If you’re really interested in what I eat and how much, feel free to check back throughout the day for updates.
Breakfast:
Sausage, egg & cheese on an English muffin – we don’t normally eat like this. Hubby bought and prepared a special Sunday breakfast and I ate some of the leftovers today. Also, I don’t normally eat a hearty breakfast but I was sick yesterday and didn’t eat much, so I woke up hungry. See? Excuses already. I told you I liked them.
Snacks:
10:00 AM
Cocoa-mocha (cocoa with instant coffee added) – unsolicited and made from scratch by a sweet daughter.
1:00 PM
Kefir, very lightly sweetened with honey - Oops. I got busy on our tax return (done! woo hoo!) and missed my second morning snack, and elevensies, and second breakfast. The kefir took care of my grumbling belly before the blood sugar sky dive event began. I’ll still need something more substantial soon.
Lunch (2:00 PM):
1/2 cup macaroni & cheese – homemade, from scratch. A stroke of genius by one of my girls.
1 cup steamed broccoli w/homemade cheese sauce – these girls are making me look good!
Snacks:
4:00 PM
6 tortilla chips & salsa, 1/2 oz of cheddar cheese
5:00 PM
16 oz. milk
Dinner:
Hamburger stroganoff (made from scratch; no cream soup) served over rice; spinach salad; crock pot applesauce (just apples, spices and a bit of water, cooked til soft)

Hershey’s Bar?
Hi I love you too. Go ahead and eat it….you probably need it more than me.
I hate when they ask for a food log!! I simply can never get enough dairy in my diet to appease them and somehow I don’t think they’d accept ice cream for every serving of dairy!!
My midwife wants 3 days of food logs at my next appointment, which is next week. I keep putting it off, with the excuse that it isn’t a normal day (which seems to be happening a lot lately, making it normal, I guess). I’ve gone to birthday parties, out to dinner with a friend who was in town, etc. and I don’t want them to see my “shameful” eating days. I guess I need to just own up at some point (very) soon.
Love the Lord of the Rings reference. How does kefir taste? I always condsider buying some to try it when Im in the aisle to buy my plain greek yogurt that is my addiction.
HeatherQ,
We make our kefir at home. It tastes very much like a thin yogurt with mild overtones of yeast. It’s not very runny, but just thick enough to drink from a mug, like a smoothie or milkshake. We sweeten ours with just enough honey to cut the sour “plain yogurt” taste.
Oh! I am relieved that you don’t eat til 2 pm either…but HOW do you survive on that small amount of food?
Maybe I need to keep a log. My midwife could suggest it and then I would laugh…and then she would call my husband and tell on me.
But really, I will be watching this. TFS!
Natalie,
I think I usually eat a lot more – this was a busy and distracted day, and I simply forgot to nibble constantly like I usually do.
Trust me – I’m a hearty eater.
Hello! How long do you normally do your apples in the crockpot? I make applesauce for baby food a lot (just apples, a little water, and *lots* of cinnamon and nutmeg) on the stove, but I’ve thought about doing it in the crockpot.
Wow, how do you manage to eat that much? I have two babies, and I can just never find the time! (And you’ve got to be *at least* as busy as I am!) It’s not unusual for me to eat a bowl of quinoa in the morning, and then not eat anything else (except for maybe an apple and peanut butter if I get a chance) until a normal-sized dinner around 6 or 7 (or 8/9 if my hubby is out working late). Terrible, I know. Especially since I’m nursing….
Lauren,
We’ve only made crockpot applesauce a couple of times, so I don’t know how long it takes – maybe 3 hours on high?
I have lots of big kids to help with food prep, and we’re a houseful of snackers so it’s not hard. I just make sure they (and I) offer the little ones a snack too when we have something.
