Spring cleaning – a little

Yesterday, hubby took 5 children to work and left me with 2 sick ones plus the baby.  Hmm.  Math moment: 5 + 2 + 1 does not = 9.  We’re missing a kid somewhere, aren’t we?  He left me with 2 littles and 2 sickos.

It must be spring.  Despite the absence of able-bodied helpers, I washed and hung out loads of laundry all by my pregnant-self, washed the curtains, changed diapers, hosed out the grubby laundry bins, refilled the hummingbird feeder, and cooked 3 – count ’em – 3 meals all by myself.  Yes, I had a smattering of help here and there, but for the first time in a long while, I did most of the work myself.

Ten years ago when I had only little children, this would not have been a noteworthy day.  Ten years ago, everything was my job, even if I had “helpers” who, just between you and me, were no real help at all.

These days, I really am spoiled.  I am reminded of that nearly every day, but especially when my back and torso are aching and weary from a modest days’ work.

I am currently enjoying one of my easiest pregnancies ever, in spite of the fact that it’s my 13th pregnancy in 16 years and I’m only a few short years from my 40th birthday.  I don’t think it’s my superb physical condition (exercise? what’s that?).  I credit my husband and children for making it easy on me, and I thank my Lord for every precious one of them.

  1. I have been reading your blog over the last few weeks and enjoying it! I was just thinking this morning that I wanted to ask you HOW you can carry in pregnancy so many children. I am 36 and have had 4 children and the last time I was pregnant my body ached so badly and I felt so terrible that I promised myself I would never do that again! 🙂

What are the tricks to having multiple pregnancies and not sitting in a rocking chair the whole time? Do you take herbal supplements, exercise, are you just superwoman? Maybe you could address if you have any secrets…Thanks!

    • Jodie,
I don’t have any secrets. I know I do feel better when I eat well, take supplements, get plenty of rest and some gentle exercise. I think that occasional visits to the chiropractor have helped, too. My midwife exhorts me regularly not to assume that it’s normal to be in pain just because I’m pregnant – most problems are *not* normal, and they have a cause that we can find and address.

  2. I am where you were ten years ago. I am overcome with housework. I am trying to train my littles to help but …like you said, no help at all. My oldest is 5 now and my youngest is 7 months. There is a 2 and 3 year old too. I am looking forward to the “being spoiled” stage and praying that it comes! I know, I know cherish the days with each child because they grow so fast. I do, most of the time. But I am wondering how in the world am I supposed to get all my house work done when I am spending all my time nursing or playing with or teaching or cherishing these moments!?

Advice please. When your helpers are home and you have time to tell me about how to keep littles in thier own beds, how to get them to sleep at naptime, how to get anything done when they are sick, how to not scream your head off and lose your patience, how to find time to bake and make homemade and handmade and cloth diaper and iron shirts for the hubby and get dressed and get up early enough to start the day off right, or how to get these littles to sleep past 6:30, or actually ANYTHING you can offer us moms of many littles.

Not that I am assuming that you have any more time to send emails or write blog posts than me, you have twice the amount of children I do!

  3. Hi
Just want to say how much I’m enjoying your blog & especially the 4 moms, 35 kids posts. I actually found your blog through the happy housewife when she said you were crazy – LOL. I’ve been enjoying reading some of your past posts & must say you have a beautiful family.
Thanks for all the work you put in
    Renata 🙂

  4. I can’t wait until I’m married and have little “helpers” of my own. You have wonderful daughters (and a great little guy, too!).

  5. I was just wondering if you ever considered hosting one of the other mom’s on your 4 Moms and 35 kids posts some time in the future (and you guest posting at their place) — I think that would be really funky!

  6. Yes children are blessing from the Lord and when they grow up they are able to bless Mother in ways that they could not when younger!

I am 31 married for 4 years and this pregnancy is my forth (we loss a little one between baby #2 and this pregnancy, and some days I wonder will anything be clean again LOL.

Doctor put me in bed rest for the next 6 weeks (until I reach 34 weeks cause baby #2 was 6 weeks early and am showing some signs that we could go early again, some contraction and open cervix!!)

Not really easy to relax and not do much when we have 2 toddler who have lots I mean lots of energy!!!

Enjoy having your big girls help you out!!!

Don't just think it: say it!
