It’s a boy (a Boy! A BOY!!!).  Stats: 7 lbs 5 oz – small for us.  20.5 inches long.  Big ole 14″ head.  The midwife thought this was pretty impressive for a 7 lb. baby.  I have to agree.

In spite of being 10 days past due, Jennifer thinks he looks more like just a few days overdue.  This means I probably was a week off with my dates.

I’ll put together a cohesive account soon, but here are a few highlights:

  • The baby was born posterior.
  • He was also born hoppin’ mad.
  • I passed out cold at one point.
  • I labored in the pool for a bit but missed when it came time to deliver.
  • The midwife missed too.  We waited too long to call her.
  • Dad caught him, but he was a slippery little guy and landed on the deck. edit: I just realized that makes it sound like we dropped him from the height of the pool.  I delivered on hands and knees outside the pool, so he only slid through Daddy’s hands and fell a couple inches.
  • I guess the walking worked.  Labor was not fun (is it ever?) but the really intense part only lasted for a little over an hour.

I’m in now.  I didn’t want to get in too soon, but the pool was calling my name and contractions are getting intense.  The last time I checked they were 4-5 minutes apart and lasting 90 seconds.  I keep finding myself vocalizing, just a little, and it seems like a good sign.

Theoretically, that is.  It also means that we’re up to 5 ows on a scale of 1-10.  At least, I hope I’m rating them right.  I’d hate to reach 10 before I reach 10, if you know what I mean.

Remember when I asked what others wear for water births?  I’m not looking up a link now; you’re on your own.  But I will tell you thank you for the helpful input.

I settled on a short, simple dress of some synthetic material that will hold much less water than the long cotton one I ended up wearing the last two times.  It has plenty of space, spaghetti straps, and comes to mid or upper thigh.

Feeling a bit queasy.  Probably the calcium and vitamin C, since it’s too early and too bearable for transition.

It’s a small dark blue print that reminds me of water and waves, and I’m wearing a black sports bra underneath.

For those who are wondering why I’m concerned about modesty at a time like this, it’s not only for the sake of my husband and the 2 midwives and 1 apprentice who will be here (one of whom I’ve only met once).  It’s not even because of my mom, though it’s been a loooong time since I ran around the house naked in her presence.

It’s primarily for the sake of my children, who will quite possibly be here at home for most of my labor.  All but one are sleeping now, but I fully expect some to wake and check on us throughout the night.  I also expect to be laboring still this morning when they all wake up.

While they did see the birth of Rachael nearly 6 years ago [ow ow ow ow], they have no great desire to see subsequent births including this one.  They’ve seen enough to satisfy their curiosity.  Likewise, I have no desire to flash them unnecessarily, either in the pool or on my way to or from the bathroom.  Clothes during labor and delivery don’t bother me, so I prefer not to shed them. Chatty children and excessively affectionate dogs and cats?  Those can be distracting.

So I’m sitting up, timing contractions with this handy contraction timer. It keeps track of length and frequency with just a click or the S key to mark the beginning and end of each contraction.

5 or 6 minutes apart and lasting 60-90 seconds.

Remember the last post, where each contraction only rated one “ouch”?  On a scale of 1 to 10, I think we’re into 3 or 4 ouches now.  These are taking all of my attention now, and we’re way past “crampy” or uncomfortable.  They hurt.

Just had my second drink right from the bottle of liquid calcium (my favorite pain killer), followed by 2000 mg. of vitamin C on my midwife’s suggestion.

I was nearly ready to wake hubby but he woke on his own [ow, ow, ow] when I turned the computer back on.  Now he’s setting up the pool for me.  I’m not ready to get in just yet – I’m afraid I may have a tendency to do that too soon and make this fun little process take longer than necessary – but I have a feeling I’ll really want it soon.

To make it official…

I’m in labor.  Without giving too much information, I’ll say I’ve been in early labor at least since this morning, but probably since yesterday afternoon when regular contractions started at 10 minutes apart.

We did go to church this morning, and as I expected contractions slowed a bit.  After the fellowship meal we went to the pastor’s house as planned.  The kids swam well into the evening, and hubby and I had a quick dip as well.  We didn’t start our hour-long drive home until nearly 9:00, but as soon as I was in the van contractions picked up a bit in frequency and significantly in intensity, back to about every 10 minutes and strong enough to be called crampy.

[ouch.  11:35]

When we got home, I had a quick snack of watermelon and immediately started puttering.  OK, I cleaned my room.  I hung up clean laundry, took the dirty to the laundry room, cleared most of the clutter from the chest of drawers, swept and dusted a little…while I was doing this, contractions got more intense, requiring me to stop and self-consciously relax.  They also moved down to about every 6 minutes, making hubby a little nervous.

Hubby settled the little ones into bed and called his mom and my mom, while I called the midwife, alerting them all that they’d probably be getting a call in the wee hours.  Checking on me frequently, he inspected and made plans for the birthing pool and had the kids help clear a bit more clutter out of the bedroom and straighten the rest of the house, which we invariably leave in a mess on Sunday morning.  I still hear the sweet sound of my daughters doing dishes out there.

Now I’m debating whether to stay up and time a few contractions or see if I can get some sleep.  I’m also waiting for at least one more contraction to end this post.  Like the proverbial watched pot, it’s taking its own sweet time.

I’ve been having semi-regular contractions at about 10 minutes apart since early yesterday evening.  They’re not painful – I was able to sleep well last night – but most are strong enough to classify as what I’d call crampy.  Experienced moms know that this doesn’t necessarily mean anything will happen very soon, but I do feel like I’m in the early stages of labor.  The question is, when will things kick into gear?  Today?  Tomorrow?  Next weekend?

We’re heading to church this morning.  I know better than to sit around twiddling my thumbs all day, waiting for something to happen.  Anyway, there’s a/c at church, and we have a date with the pastor’s swimming pool this afternoon.  I don’t plan on missing that unless I really have to.

Walked 5 miles this morning

Last night, hubby and I walked 3.3 miles.  This morning we set out again and joked a bit about going 5 miles.  At least, I thought we were joking.  We walked a new route with lots of hills and when we got back to the van, we had only gone 2.6 so decided to go a bit farther.

And farther.

And farther.

And then I realized we weren’t joking.  When we made it back to the van a second time, my pedometer showed 4.75 miles.  We could have stopped there, but it was just too tempting to go on.   2 miles earlier, I was whiny and hubby was encouraging me to go on.  Now, I wasn’t quite ready to stop.

I don’t know if I’ve ever walked 5 miles in my life, and I know I’ve never done it while 8 days overdue.  In fact, I’ve done very little while 8 days overdue – mainly just stuff like giving birth.

All told, we did 5.15 miles this morning, 3.3 miles last night, and just might do enough this evening to make a total of 10 miles in less than 24 hours.  I may still be pregnant, but I’m also going to be in shape.  Hey, round is a shape!

No news here

No particular news.  I missed my walk the last 2 mornings, so hubby and I walked 3.4 miles this evening.  Usually I get very few contractions while walking – far less than just puttering about the house – but this evening was different.  For some reason, I had 5 in the space of the last 20 minutes.

But they slowed to normal once we got home, and now I’m back to where I’ve been for most of the week: noticeable but not particularly strong contractions every 10-20 minutes, just enough to draw my attention from what I’m doing and make my legs feel weak and tingly.

It’s the weekend, so I have high hopes.  That’s when nearly all of our babies seem to make their grand appearance.  But I also have a sneaking suspicion that this baby could very possibly wait for another week.  It’s just not hard for me to imagine.

In the meantime, I guess I’ll try to keep walking.  I love the energy and the absence of “normal” aches and pains!  I just hope I’d don’t suddenly go into TV-style labor and drop a kid on a gravel road a mile from home.  Then again, that could be the best birth story ever…

But no baby.  Obviously, this little one is waiting for Mom to reach the proper level of desperation.

I had very noticeable contractions again for all of the afternoon and evening, beginning very soon after my chiropractic adjustment.  I had high hopes that he had set something in motion, but I knew the contractions weren’t strong enough to be accomplishing anything yet.

I picked up hubby at work, and we tried to go see a movie but couldn’t find anything we wanted to see.  Instead we had dinner at Pei Wei (delicious and very reasonable – my new obsession!), picked up The Blind Side from Redbox and brought it home to treat the family to a late night showing, starting at 10:30.  I was still hoping (but not really believing) that I might be in early labor.

By the time the movie was over, I was pretty sure hubby wouldn’t be getting today off work, and he didn’t.  I slept soundly through the night and much later this morning than I care to admit.

And I woke up still pregnant, much to the children’s disappointment.

Status: pregnant. still.

But I jokingly told hubby and children that the birth was scheduled for tomorrow, exactly one week past the duedate.  I think I’ve begun labor on a Thursday over 80% of the time so far, and I’ve never yet gone more than 8 days past my duedate so it seems very likely that things will begin to happen very soon, quite possibly tonight.

And just because it seemed to help once before, I even scheduled a last-minute chiropractic adjustment with the practitioner recommended by my midwife.  That’s today at 3:30, then I’ll drive into The Big City to pick up hubby at work and we’ll probably hang around town for the evening, enjoying one last date.

Last night didn’t count as a real date since we had 2 teens in tow.  It was more like a mini-family night.  It was fun and I’m sure people thought we were a cute family with our 2 children and one more on the way.  We’re obviously giving it one last try for a boy, right?  If only they knew…[evil over-populator laugh]

But in all fairness, I have to add that I’m still not desperate or even terribly impatient.  Realistically, I feel like this baby could stay put for another week.  Which leaves you plenty of time to enter our Big Baby Giveaway, if you haven’t already.  Or maybe you just don’t want to win free stuff from Thanks Mama, Maccessorized Marie Madeline StudioNew Creation Apparel, and Vision Forum?

Maybe that title should read, “How the other 3 moms put it all together, while I flake out again.”  I’ll confess that I didn’t plan at all for this post because even though I really didn’t expect to go into labor before this weekend my brain has been in labor mode for over a  week now.

May I just suggest that we all pop over and visit the other 3 moms to see what you and I can learn from them?  Because I obviously need some help putting things together right now.

My favorite animal out of all our animals which is dogs, cats, gerbils, chickens, snakes and tarantulas is the baby chicks.
They are only 3-4 days old. I like to go down to them whenever I can. They are still covered in fuzz, but the oldest one has little tiny bits of feathers on the tip of its wings.
Here are some pictures of them.  I cropped them in Photoshop and Mom showed me how to Save For Web so they wouldn’t take too long to load.

Birth stories: I love them!

It’s Wednesday, and still nothing.  I’m not feeling nearly as impatient as I probably sound.  I’m actually feeling a little foolish for my apprehension over the last few weeks.  I should have known that the baby wouldn’t come until I felt good and ready – that’s the way it’s always been, and I’ve always thought that God planned it that way for most of us.  I should have trusted His timing more and worried less about the calendar and my own state of mind.

But now I’m feeling eager and ready in spite of the fact that I’m really enjoying this pregnancy.  It’s a pleasant surprise to have so much energy and so little discomfort at this point, which makes it a little puzzling that I’m so ready to face the pains of labor and be done with this pregnancy – but only a little puzzling.  There’s quite obviously a sweet reward at the end, and who wouldn’t be excited about that?

And speaking of the reward at the end, what mother doesn’t love reading birth stories?  Is it silly that I always get teary-eyed at the end?  I don’t know why, but I can’t resist.  This one is real tear-jerker. I dare you not to cry.

I’ve shared most of mine in the past except for The Boy, since I live-blogged his labor and never thought to write up a single cohesive account of his birth.

I also asked for links to birth stories when I was expecting Bethany – this is when I discovered those by One Thing.  She tells a great birth story, and has plenty of them to tell.  I think her birth stories kept me entertained for several centimeters while I labored with Bethany.

Now, even before I could ask you all to share more links to your own or other favorite birth stories, I found that Kimberly at Raising Olives is sharing hers too – and boy, does she have some stories to tell!  Here’s her first, and her second is split into part one and part two.  I can only assume the series will be ongoing since she’s expecting #10 in just a few weeks.

But I still want to know – where are your favorite birth stories?

Only so that nobody thinks I am suspiciously quiet

Nothing is happening.  Absolutely nothing.  Now that the weekend is over, I’m back to having far less false labor than usual and am totally convinced that this baby will arrive fashionably late.

Since I was in a hurry to exercise as much as possible before the baby arrived and I since I seem to have been granted a little extra time, I walked 3.3 miles today including that nasty 1/4 mile hill that leads up to our driveway.  I didn’t mean to go quite so far.  I blame my nifty new iPod and the sweet husband and daughters who gave it to me.  I was busy listening to an audiobook and found myself in no hurry to get home.  Tomorrow, I’ll probably listen to The Chicken Whisperer talk about Muscovy Ducks (ht to my friend Mother Hen).

My walking seems to be paying off.  After just over 4 weeks, I have actually lost inches on my bust, hips and waist.  Yes, waist.  Laugh with me.  Laugh at me.  My belly still measures bigger from top to bottom at every prenatal appointment, but apparently I’ve lost some padding on the back and sides.  Don’t hate me.  It’s recently acquired padding and didn’t belong there in the first place.  I was congratulating myself on losing inches until I remembered how horrified I was at my recent measurements, and that my hips, etc. still measure far bigger than I realized.  I like to boast that my non-pregnant weight is still very close to what I weighed when I was married at 19, but it’s amazing what a difference in size there is between muscle and fat!

But my biggest hope is that the activity will make for a better labor, which is why I’m so determined to keep walking daily.  I still have hopes of repeating labor & delivery #6, which happened during the summer of the bicycle obsession.  The week before she was born, the very week she was due, I rode 12 miles to a nearby town.  We biked several miles nearly every day with 5 little ones in tow, riding luxuriously behind us in their double bike trailers and bicycle baby seats.

I also had my first-ever chiropractic adjustment during week that she was overdue.  Did I mention that I put in a call to my midwife today, asking for her recommendation of a chiropractor?

What do you think contributed to your best-ever natural labor? And by best-ever, I mean least painful. Let’s just get that clear right from the start.  :)  No fair bragging up your epidural since my midwife doesn’t carry those in her little black bag.
