Did you get a CBD homeschool catalog last week? I did and was tickled to see that it had a promo code to get free shipping on any order of $35 or more!

But…

But: one of the kids helpfully threw away the catalog before I could use or even write down my code.

Does anyone have a code I can use? Each code can be used 3 times, so even if you’ve used yours, it should still be good. And what was the expiration date? I forgot that too, and can’t look again since MY CATALOG IS IN THE TRASH.

Better yet, it would be really nice if anyone who isn’t going to use their code 3 times would share it in the comments for others. I’ll try to add them to the sidebar where I put CBD promo codes. Then anyone who wants can use one. Just let me know if you try to use a code and find that it’s all used up.

I have 5 tanks for sale for $30 each w/shipping. edit: please add $5 each to help with shipping, since these are heavy and shipping is much more than we expected. These tanks are new from the Vision Forum clearance shelves. The boxes are a little banged up but that’s all.

edit: The first 5 tanks have sold, but I can get more next week. Just leave a comment to tell me you want one and I’ll email you.

We get to test these for Vision Forum before they are placed on the clearance shelf. Sometimes we’ll just chase each other around shooting, or we might both have one, or maybe we’ll all gang up on one person.

One time, I was just walking along minding my own business when POW! someone shot me! So I picked up the tank and just as he was about to shoot me again and turned the it around so he shot himself in the face. The tanks don’t shoot as hard as normal Air-Soft guns so he was fine.

The Vision Forum Baby Conference is this weekend, and I’m more than a little nervous. Just in case you didn’t hear, I’ve been asked to sit on a panel with several other moms. We’ll be taking questions from the audience about raising and managing a large family.

With company like Jennie Chancey, Beall Phillips, Victoria Botkin, Carmon Friedrich, Deborah Brown, Denise Sproul, and Michelle Duggar, there’s a good chance I won’t be singled out for any questions.

But if any of you are there and want to make sure I don’t get left out, could you do me one favor? Ask really easy questions, like this:

“Mrs. Botkin, how do you feel large families impact the environment, and do you believe they contribute to global climate change?”

“Mrs. Phillips, what is the legal status of corporal discipline in the state of Wyoming?”

“Mrs. Chancey, how has western feminism affected the aboriginal women of Australia?”

“KimC, how often should I change my baby’s diaper?”

Or better yet, just meet me on my way out with a smile and a large mocha frappuccino with whole milk, and tell me you couldn’t tell that I was nervous at all. You’ll be my very best friend.

This weekend, I was a little shocked to see a 3yo with a pacifier in his mouth. Wait – if your 3yo still has a pacifier, don’t leave. Read the rest.

My kids have all been finger or thumb suckers, so we don’t do pacifiers. This worked out well for us since I don’t like pacifiers. I’m afraid we would constantly lose the paci, causing emotional turmoil in the middle of church, the wee hours of the night and other inconvenient times.

I understand that many parents encourage the use of pacifiers because they don’t want their babies to become thumbsuckers, and I understand that many parents use pacifiers for other reasons. However, I’m always a little surprised and disapproving when I see a toddler with a pacifier. I can’t help but wonder, Isn’t it time to take that thing away?

But why? Why do I feel that way? Is 3 really too old?

I don’t mind if my children hang onto the thumb habit until they’re 4 or 5, even though well-meaning friends and family sometimes express disapproval. All of our children have quit on their own, gradually, without external pressure or trauma. Maybe people are shocked when they see my toddler with her thumb firmly planted in her mouth. I’m not offended, but neither am I motivated to wrap her thumb in duct tape or paint bitter chemicals on it.

This made me realize how my own preconceived notions affect the way I think and the way I see things.

That’s not to say that everything in life is subjective, or that we each should find what’s right for us and our family. When it comes to principles, there is a right way and a wrong way, and we need to search God’s Word and seek out wise counsel.

But there are principles and then there are methods; one describes the goal and the other describes the path. Sometimes the two blur and overlap. Sometimes there is only one path to a particular goal. Other goals may be reached more than one way. Even if we agree that a calm and happy baby is a noble goal, we may find many God-honoring ways to reach that point.

It’s a small thing, but my little pacifier epiphany was a reminder that when I feel disapproving feelings bubble up, the first thing I need to do is take a look at my own assumptions in light of scripture. Do I disapprove because it’s not my way, or because it’s not God’s way?

Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment. John 7:24

Father’s Day

Father’s Day came late in our house this year.

Perry and I had scheduled a 2 day trip to Dallas the week after Father’s Day to have Parker circumcised by a rabbi. That may sound like a long way to drive, but while we did want Parker circumcised, we really didn’t want to repeat the AMA experience. Since we didn’t have time to shop around and check references, we went with my midwife’s enthusiastic recommendation.

It also helped that we had a lot of family in the Dallas/Fort Worth area who would love to meet our new son and would happily lodge us. Our only cost would be time and gas, plus the rabbi’s fee.

But the cost of gas is pretty high when you drive a 15 passenger van. After some quick calculations, we figured out that it would be worthwhile to rent a car for the drive, leaving most of the family at home. I called around and found that we could rent a car for 2 days with unlimited mileage for just over $60, far less than we would save in gas. Even better, we would save wear and tear on our van and enjoy better air conditioning.

I handled the arrangements myself, but while Perry thought I was reserving an economy car, the girls pooled their money to upgrade our rental for Father’s Day.

Instead of 2 days in a modest and sensible economy car, we spent 4 days in this:

It was supposed to be a Mustang, but alas! Somebody was having too much fun and didn’t turn in the Mustang on time. I can’t say I blame him, but it meant my poor husband had to settle for a Camaro. I think he handled the disappointment rather well. It probably helped that the Camaro had a bigger engine than the one in our monstrous van.

Of course, he made sure to share nicely with the kids.
