Homemade Catalina salad dressing

Not the healthiest, but certainly better than what you buy in a bottle and tastes just as good or better.  We already cut the sugar down but you’ll probably want to experiment with even less.  I keep meaning to try this recipe with diluted tomato paste instead of ketchup but haven’t done it yet.  Let me know if you do!

Catalina salad dressing

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1/2 tsp. chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 2/3 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup oil

Just shake together in a jar and store in the refrigerator.  Easy, peasy.  Never run out of catalina again!

  1. Thank you! I’ll have to try it!

  2. What about using homemade ketchup instead of store bought? You can control the amount of sugar going in the dressing even more.

  3. Don’t even think twice about the “healthy”ness of this recipe. If you compare it to ANY salad dressing out of a bottle from the grocery store your recipe stands head and shoulders above them all “healthy”wise, and likely taste-wise as well.

  4. Thx for sharing! Look forward to trying on my Catalina lovers!

  5. Hi, Kim. I love running into you like this!
Thanks for the enchilada tip. I am going to make these Wednesday. It will be a much saner preparation than the last time.
I have tried a catalina dressing with tomato paste because I have it on hand more than ketchup. I like it better because it’s the tomato flavor without more sugar and flavor when all the other ingredients are flavors.
Splash a little worcestershire sauce in your catalina dressing. Just a little.

    • This is my grandmother’s friend’s recipe from the 1960’s. It uses tomato soup not ketchup.
      1 can tomato soup
      2/3 c sugar
      1 tsp salt/pepper
      2/3 c oil
      1/2 c apple cider vinegar
      1 tsp dry mustard
      small grated onion
      Mix together Makes one quart

Don't just think it: say it!
