cbmower 300x250 Painless hard drive crashes from now on. We have Carbonite.

We’ve already lost enough hard drives to keep us from taking unnecessary chances in the future.  Can you guess how many hard drive enclosures we have bought, trying to recover data from crashes?

Do you own a hard drive enclosure?  Have you ever needed one?

  1. Not sure where specifically to comment but I love LOVE the new picture on the home page. The last was small and hard to see. The kids look very grown up.

  2. Thanks for the idea of using carbonite. We have never lost pictures or info through a hard drive crash. We have 7 years worth of digital pictures though so I imagine a crash is inevitable.
I bought the one year of carbonite and am currently uploading all my files.
Again, Thank you for bringing carbonite to my attention.

  3. I have a Windows Home Server in the house. One time payment (around $100) and no monthly or yearly fees and I can back up 10 computers on site. If something goes down, I pop in a CD ROM and the system comes back to the last backup. It also allows me to access my files from anywhere, remote desktop the PC’s remotely (if I’m using a Windows Professional version) host my own websites, and have a central storage for all PC’s on the network.

Best of all, it has multiple hard drives stored in RAID. Even if one were to fail, I buy another one and stick it in and the system continues to run.

The only thing that I can see that Carbonite buys you is off-site storage (which doesn’t seem to be your problem?). So I’m going to have to figure out a could based backup in case the house were to burn down or something unforeseen like that happens. But I’m happy having all my photos and music still under my own roof and not at someone else’s datacenter. :)

Glad to hear that you have a good solution for your troubles!

  4. We have the same setup as MInTheGap. Though we are about to go with a completely different setup since we are moving to Macs. We could still use WHS but the new changes will make things more efficient.
