We spent way too much time last week watching videos of Mishka, and we don’t even know her.
Maybe it appealed to me in part because when I was growing up we had a very vocal coyote mix. We taught her a few tricks but never thought to try teaching her some real words.
I hope my mom still reads my blog. She would love Mishka, partly because our coyote was bonded to Mom and partly because she has always loved huskies and malemutes. But mostly because Mom had a talking poodle when she was a kid. Her miniature poodle Paulette begged for scraps by saying, “I want…I want…”
I have to admit I never quite believed that Mom’s poodle could talk (sorry Mom!) until a few months ago, when a friend introduced me to her talking miniature poodle. I kid you not. Tracy’s poodle can say “I love you” every bit as clearly as Mishka. You do believe me, don’t you? If not, I don’t blame you. I’m pretty sure I was wearing my skeptical face when Tracy told me her dog could do it.
What’s the most amazing trick you have seen a pet perform? Have you ever taught your own pet a cool trick?
When I was 11, I spent weeks teaching my cock-a-poo dog to roll over and to play dead. Maggie was so convincing, she even closed her eyes and hung limply in my arms if I picked her up. Dad would have been happier if I had spent more time teaching her not to pee on his books and papers.by
