22 weeks: I am big and lazy {pregnancy update}

Wow.  I feel amazed again at how much bigger I am just a week later.  I did a little googling and found that babies often experience a growth spurt from 16-20 weeks, so maybe we’re at the tail end of that.  Then again, maybe gravity has been unkind because I had several very long days last week when Perry, Deanna and I attended the Texas Republican Convention as delegates.

You know those tiny gold toned baby feet pins you can get from pro-life organizations?   I spent 3 days with mine pinned to the belly of my shirt and everyone who noticed loved it.   It also helped cover my belly button, which is beginning to pop out and will stay there for the next several months.

I can’t believe the third trimester is creeping up on me – or am I creeping up on it?  It seems like this pregnancy has gone very quickly so far.  I think there are several reasons:

  1. I didn’t spend the first 3 months counting the days until I stopped puking.
  2. We’ve been uncharacteristically busy – though I’ve been saying that for a long time.  Eventually I may have to accept this pace as the new normal for us.
  3. The end of my childbearing years is getting closer.  I may have 10 years or more, but I don’t know.  Each pregnancy is more likely to be my last, so I find myself savoring the experience more each time and less anxious to be done.  I can’t wait to meet my baby and every milestone is exciting, but every day is precious too.
Belly pics
Will I regret it if I skip the dress this week and just settle for the pic above?  This week has been HOT so far, and I have no desire to pull on a full length synthetic dress, go outside for a photo session, and change clothes again.  It just sounds like a lot of work.  Dinner is in the crock pot, the little kids are napping, the laundry is caught up, and it’s the heat of the day.  I’d much rather sit in front of a fan and drink ice water.  Wouldn’t you?

Baby at 22 weeks

  • Baby is about 11 inches long and weighs in at about 1 pound.
  • Baby reacts to loud sounds.
  • Baby starts having a regular sleeping and waking rhythm.
  • The mother’s movements can wake her baby.
  • Taste buds are forming on baby’s tongue.
  • more

Your turn: How are you this week?  Leave your update in the comments or link to it!

  1. Whitney says:

Ok Kim, I only have 7 but the phrase, “the laundry was caught up,” does NOT come out of my mouth!! Wow, good for you! Enjoy the rest time when you can get it!! Love the updates!

  2. Oh I LOVE that little feet pin!! So adorable!

Well, I can’t join in with the “how are you this week?” thing any more, because I had my baby a couple of weeks ago. I am so grateful to those who prayed over the growth scans I was having (he was not growing well at one point), thank you! Elijah was born at home, and he weighed 6lbs 8oz, perfectly healthy. He has gained a pound already and he’s doing great, praise the Lord! So I have six little boys aged 7 and under! 🙂 I kind of miss being pregnant already – NOT the nausea and the pelvic pain and the insomnia, but that stuff kind of fades in my memory and I’m left with missing the “ripe with new life” thing, and the baby kicks, and the excited anticipation… I love those things so much! I am 36 and starting to feel as you describe about time running out for many more babies. I feel so sad about it! I hope and pray that the Lord will bless us with more babies yet! I’m SO thankful He led me to your blog six years ago. 🙂

  3. Heather Wawa says:

I’m 25 weeks and feel just huge. I can’t imagine how I’m going to be able to move at all in three months! I love your idea of the belly pin – very cute indeed!

  4. I love the pin! My mom gave me one after I lost our first baby at 10 weeks – about the size the feet on the pin are supposed to be.
My due date is..tomorrow! Not that it matters since the baby doesn’t have a calendar. Mostly it means I get to start shocking people when they ask about my due date and I say “last week.”
I am so ready to be done and meet our baby girl. While I would love to have more children, I’m not a fan of pregnancy and can’t bring myself to savor it. This may or may not be our last pregnancy (the hubby’s not as interested in a big family as I am). I know I’ll soak up all the newborn moments in case it is my last time, but I wouldn’t miss pregnancy for 1 second. Are there any moms of many who just don’t like pregnancy?

    • Renee, I’ve never been a big fan of pregnancy with all its discomforts, but as I get older and realize this season is nearly at an end I find my view changing. It’s surprising to feel this way, and I wish I had felt this way all along, but even at this late point I’m grateful for the shift in perspective.

  5. Hannah H says:

Just had my little guy yesterday! God blessed us and everything went well! Nathaniel John 8lbs 10 oz. 21 in long. Our smallest baby yet! The other two were 10 lbs 15oz and 9 lbs. 11oz! This is our first son, so excited!!

    • Hannah, congratulations! Enjoy the ride – boys will melt your heart and drive you crazy. I’m still amazed by the fact that we have boys!

  6. The pin is really cute! I too feel like this pregnancy is going by much faster than my others, even though it is only my third.

This past week was marked by a lot of visits to hospitals trying to get the proper medical book for a birth record. Apparently in China you have to go to the hospital in the district you live in to get this record book, even if you want to deliver at another hospital, and they required additional tests to “prove” I was healthy before they would give it to me. It was kind of a hassle but it’s done now, they even let me see the baby a little bit on the required ultrasound, and the kidney and liver function tests all came back good, not that anyone else was worried about those. 🙂

I am also just thankful that so far my biggest “problems” with this pregnancy have been paperwork and minor discomfort things that won’t effect the baby’s or my own health at all in the long run.

  7. I’m 29 weeks 2 days. It’s been hot here in Minnesota too, but today is a gorgeous 60 degrees out. My house has finely cooled off. My pregnancy has been going fast too. Only about 10 weeks to go because I have to have another c-section. Glad your pregnancy is going well too.

  8. Love those cute little feet, I’m guessing your little baby feet are a LOT bigger than that by now 🙂 We are 40 weeks 3 days, and waiting, any day now. Starting to have contractions in the evening and they are getting stronger even earlier in the day so that is exciting!

So glad this pregnancy is going a little easier and quicker for you Kim!

    Here’s my update for 40 weeks, http://www.chrisandjenni.com/2012/06/11/40-weeks-2-days-pregnant-any-day-now-bud/

  9. I think I would regret it more if you WERE to get up, put on said synthetic dress, shoot photo, and change clothes again. But you must give that dress a shake and smooth it out (the equivalent of giving your friend a hug) because it has been good to you.

Don’t get up for me, please, and enjoy your long, cool glass of ice water. : j

  10. I’m at 27-and-a-half weeks, which to me is third trimester! I apparently have celebrated this milestone by kicking into full nap mode. Every single day for the last several days, and some days last week, I have been taking HOURS long naps in the afternoon! The littles go down for their naps, and I just can’t keep my eyes open! Fortunately the bigger kids have been able to responsibly entertain themselves *quietly* so I could rest. I really need to get back into high gear, though – we have relatives coming this weekend, and the house is NOT ready for them!

  11. mamamia says:

Did you do anything differently this time around that your morning sickness wasn’t as bad?

    • I think it’s a combination of decreasing hormones (I’m nearly 40) and eating just the right amounts and combinations of food. No sugar, low carb, small and frequent portions, a little acid with every meal, lots of veggies. Oh – and lots of beans!

      • mamamia says:

I’m 5 months away from 39. My youngest is 8 months and would love to have another (sooner then later if the Lord wills it.) but I fear morning sickness, especially having a young one that needs my full attention.
What kind of acidy foods do you eat? Beans? I’m not a big fan of them. I guess it would be worth it if it helps with morning sickness. : )

        • The acidic foods were usually a small tomato or pickle, some salsa, half an apple or orange, or even a swallow of lemon juice. Just anything with some acid in it to aid with digestion.

  12. I think just the belly shot will do. It’s certainly a unique use for the precious feet pin! How am I, you ask? I am finished! 9 days ago, and he’s super sweet. Happy times. I imagine I got started having babies too late in life to have quite as many as the *really* big family’s, but our five look like kind of a crowd to me. It’s wonderful. 🙂

  13. I am six weeks and just feeling so OFF. Nothing sounds good to eat today. I had my usual breakfast (two eggs, ham, swiss, in a small wrap) but had to force myself to finish. I had three chicken nuggets for lunch and a mini granola bar for snack. ugh.

Don't just think it: say it!
