My friends the Brown family at Ketocton Baptists have provided a thought provoking read on feminism from a rather un-American standpoint.

You see Mrs. Brown is Romanian by birth and grew up in a socialist society.

From the post:

Socialist governments want women in the work force as much as men and the family is a tool of production. Fathers do not provide vision for their children, but rather leave it up to the State. I am often times shocked to see that what was seen as oppression in the Socialist Republic of Romania is called liberty here in America (even among Christians). What really hit home was a comment made by Voddie Baucham [In the film Return of the Daughters]. He said, “I don’t know why we allow ourselves to be poured into the world’s mold…”

I as I caught up on some of the comments on my follow-up post on the McDonald’s Boycott I came across the following comment by blogger MInTheGap.  In his followup post he made a few good points I want to interact with, but first his comment:

I always wonder if these things really work– especially with people that are hardened in their ways. McD’s clearly has taken a stand, and believes they’ve taken the right one.

Well, I would point out a few recent boycotts that seem to have worked – Ford and American Girls Doll. I also know of a few that have not seemed to have any effect – the SBC boycott of Disney in the 80′s and 90′s. Incidentally, we did not take part in the Disney boycott because it just wasn’t on the radar for us back then.

The other thing to think about is whether or not this will have the opposite effect. While I’m definitely in the “holiness” camp and not in the “love” camp, this is yet another opportunity for the Enemy to characterize us as unloving.

I radically disagree with this statement or at least the implication that this is a bad thing. God is love AND He is holy; I don’t think the two are necessarily mutually exclusive.  To some extent the fact that we are even having this discussion (is it loving to take a public stand against sin) shows the success of the world to frame the debate. It’s the first card that McDonald’s played – I suspect due to the fact that its Vice President of Communications is a gay man who is also the corporate rep on the board of the NGLCC.  Gay activists are very good at trying to use the politics of guilt and pity for their own ends.

Indeed, we need a positive thing we’re doing instead, and not just a negative thing.

Agreed. I do positive things to combat the sins of our culture all the time. I attend public worship, I tithe, I have family worship, I train my children to read the Bible and pray.  In other words I try to live all of my life (and train my children) to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. This would include how I treat anyone I meet in person.  See Matthew 5.

We also need to be careful that we do not exaggerate the importance of this one sin. We may all be willing to jump on the bandwagon of boycotting a place that supports homosexuality– but how about those that promote gluttony, gossip, and other immorality.

I’m trying to give you things to think about. I believe homosexuality is one of the latter things that happens to a culture in decline, and it’s something that should be fought against, but we’re hypocrites if we only judge where we will eat based on this one issue.

Well there are certainly things to think about here. Several things come to mind.

1.) In my view God exaggerates the importance of this sin. Romans one makes a couple of points relevant to this.

a.) The act is unnatural (Rom. 1:27)

b.) The particular sin of homosexuality is in itself a judgment for the sins of idolatry (Rom. 1:27) – thus putting it in a unique category.  Not to belabor the point but it is a sign of the decay of a culture because it’s a form of judgment that brings more judgment from the Lord if not repented of.

2.) You are setting up a false dichotomy if you try to force a choice between boycotting everything and nothing. I might, as the head of my house, choose to commit to certain strategic efforts to force public change on one or more (or no) companies as I see fit before the Lord. This does not make me a hypocrite. You said in a recent post

“How about boycotting the All-You-Can-Eat buffet for allowing or encouraging gluttony?  Any takers?  How about an organization to combat gossip, being a busybody, or invading someone else’s privacy? “

As for gossip I direct you to the badge in my sidebar icon wink More thoughts on the Mcdonalds boycott   Back to your comment:

We’re all sinners– some saved by grace. We need to be praying and working to bring people to repentance. This is more important than worrying about buying a burger from a specific place.

Here is the heart of the matter for me.  See, an all-you-can-eat buffet is not actively promoting gluttony in the public sphere the way the NGLCC is.  I see the push to normalize homosexual behavior in our culture as the leading front (or one of them) in the culture wars. It’s at the heart of the attack against the Biblical family, and is being used to chip away, in our culture, at the fundamental social unit in society – the family – by chipping away at  the perceived differences between the genders and their roles.

No one is denying that we need to work for repentance and faith in those who do not know Christ.  When you say “This is more important than worrying about buying a burger from a specific place,” I think you risk trivializing the issues and the people involved in the boycott.

Finally I want to close by thanking MinTheGap for his thought provoking commentary.  We need good issue-driven discussions, illuminated by Scripture to sharpen us as believers.

My good friend Doug Phillips has this to say:

“I respectfully disagree with part of that statement. I am confident that Mrs. Palin is a delightful, sincere, thoughtful, and capable woman with many commendable virtues. But in fairness, there is nothing “traditional” about mothers of young children becoming career moms, chief magistrates and leading nations of three hundred million, nor is this pattern the biblical ideal to which young women should aspire. At a time when motherhood and marriage is so under attack, the message Republicans are sending is this: Winning political elections is more important than the following proposition given by the Lord: “That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, [To be] discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed” (Titus 2:4-5).”

I respectfully submit the question we ought to ask is not is a candidate  “traditional” or “conservative” but ‘are they biblically qualified?’

voting Are you scared of Hillary?

Do you think your vote will go to waste?

Does a Clinton or Obama presidency terrify you?

Think voting for a candidate whose poll numbers are low is a waste?

From Doug Phillips blog:

More important than who wins or loses the 2008 election is this: will Christians look to the Bible as their absolute standard for determining what principles must guide their voting practices? At stake is far more than the presidency. The question concerns the conscience of the Church. We can “win” an election, and yet sell our spiritual birthright. Conversely, we can “lose” an election yet remain faithful to the Word of God, thus preserving the conscience of the body of Christ and enjoying the favor of the Lord.

Elections matter. They matter a great deal. But what matters the most is that the Church remains faithful to her Bridegroom by following the only infallible standard ever written for the selection of civil magistrates. That standard is the Bible, and there is none other that perfectly reflects the mind of God. It is our source book for determining what guidelines must govern the selection of our leaders.

Some believe that the Bible is silent on the question of what standards should govern the selection of a civil magistrate. But to reach this conclusion is to deny the sufficiency of Scripture, and to substitute autonomous human reason for biblical revelation. Others are so fearful of certain outcomes, that there is little reasoning with them. These individuals are (no doubt, unwittingly) fixed on specific outcomes, not commitment to biblical guidelines. They want to condemn their brethren by saying that a vote for X, is really a vote for Y. Their election fears seem sometimes to rise to a self-righteous hysteria, governed more by emotions than objective standards. None of these approaches are helpful.

The Bible is the only answer for fearful Christians in an age of politics. The Bible has the answer to the ethical chaos of fear-driven voting, pragmatic voting, “ends-justifies-the-means” voting, and “lesser-of-two-evils” voting. The Bible does not require Christians to vote for perfect candidates, but it does require that Christians support biblically qualified candidates. Biblical Principles of the Ballot Box explores the Scriptural standards for selecting civil magistrates, and offers great hope for Christians living in an age in which our leaders have broken covenant with the God of their fathers. It explores the blessing presented in Scripture to all who will enter the ballot box with supreme confidence that the Lord sovereignly reigns, that He is more pleased with our obedience than with our rationalistic, extra-biblical voting strategies, and that the greatest hope for America is not found in the outcome of any one election, but in the persevering witness of the Church as God’s representative in America, to uphold his non-negotiable standards and righteousness.

from Dave B.

We’ve got homeschool & church friends in Arkansas, who campaigned for ‘Pastor Huck’ for governor 10 years ago, and now they’re warning the broader evangelical community in America of their bitter experience with him as Governor. We’ve heard their warning – and are thus unwilling to sign on to ‘Huck’s Army’.

Ron Paul, on the other hand, his ‘walk matches his talk’. He’s a devoted Christian man married for 50 years with 5 children & 18 grandchildren. What a testimony….

Which brings me to my latest video, “Dr. No.” This caught my attention. When you listen to Ron Paul you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is speaking from well thought out, constitutionally based, bedrock convictions.

Can you say that about the other politicians in this race?

I can’t.

Traditionally it has been limited federal government based on a strong view of the Constitution and States rights. In other words decentralization along with more personal freedom. If I am correct then there is only one conservative running in the primaries and it ain’t Mike Huckabee.

Cal Thomas agrees with me so does Chuck Baldwin.

Don’t believe me? Check his record, his public statements, his stated platform.

I think this is one of the most refreshing Presidential races I can ever remember (I barely remember Reagan’s 1980 win) because of the web. We can see and hear what a candidate says and does straight from the source we the people are not relegated to hearing the creative sound bites that the networks want to feed us.

Because of this I strain to understand why Huckabee is getting so much of the homeschool support. He is not constitutionalist. He is no conservative. He is pro-federal involvment in education. Skeptical?

Check this out

To be fair from everything I have read about Huckabee he is known to be strong on two important issues – he is pro second amendment, and he is pro-life.

He is also pro federal interference in far too many areas to count as a conservative.

Hey, don’t take my word for it. Check out the links and tell me what you think.
