I cannot believe the amount of loot gifts our son has received. I don’t think there has ever been an eighth child whose arrival was so lauded by so many people.
I am thankful to all of the friends, acquaintances, friends of friends, and absolute strangers who have celebrated with us the birth of our boy. Not once has anyone questioned our wisdom in having so many children, our ability to provide for their physical or spiritual welfare, or the stunning good looks and obvious intelligence of each one.
Last Sunday, our church gave us a large basket filled with gifts for the baby. Many of our friends from other areas of life had already given little Perry gifts as well. But this was not the end. Many of the same people joined with us again yesterday to shower the little guy with more love and gifts.
The baby shower yesterday afternoon was a joy: so many of our family and friends, new and old, all in one place at one time! The driveway was packed, the dining room was packed, and there were babies and toddlers everwhere! All 16 cousins were together again along with countless other little ones. It was beautiful!
Most of the guests drove an hour or more to rejoice with us, and even though we had guests from several distinct groups (church, family, Hubby’s work friends) everyone seemed to mingle freely, and I think several people met old acquaintances in a new context.
The baby mingled freely as well: he was passed from one cooing admirer to the next so that I hardly saw him all afternoon. Fortunately, there were many other babies present to be shared as well.
Once again, I am stunned at God’s providence. When our son was born, he needed clothes. This much was obvious. All of our blankets were painfully feminine. I was sure well-wishers would realize this. He has received an abundance of clothes and blankets in a very nice variety of sizes and seasons.
I’m going to have such fun dressing my little man in little man clothes!
But what was less obvious was that we had retired all of baby equipment as well: our double stroller (a gift when our 2nd daughter was born) had broken; our Pack-n-Play (a gift when our 1st daughter was born) was showing signs of heavy wear – this had been our primary crib for 4 children; our carseat (a thrift-store find) was retired after Rachael moved into a toddler seat.
God is good, of course. Our cup overfloweth.
All of this brings to mind one of my favorite passages in Phillippians, when Paul rejoices at the gifts he has received from the Phillippian church -
Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account. (Ph. 4:17)
I’m not sure my motives were so entirely pure as Paul’s (Hubby encouraged me several times before the baby was born not to worry), but these past 3 weeks have done my heart good to see again how our covenant family rejoiced in our boy.
I just have to ask…

Does anyone think it’s a coincidence that our boy is far and away the best burper I’ve ever had? If he grows up to be a superhero, belching will be his super power.
On the bright side, thanks to his incredible natural ability, he has never ever spit up. Now I know why God made burps.

I’ve had several people ask me if I noticed anything different in this pregnancy – anything that made me suspect that this baby was a boy.
There were two noteworthy differences: one was the baby’s activity, and the other was a short Asian woman.
This baby was strong: he punched, kicked, stretched, twisted and caused a lot of pain before labor ever started. I convinced myself that it didn’t mean anything, because our 4th daughter was the same way. We were convinced that she would be a boy for that very reason.
But…she has always been built differently than the other girls: she is muscular, strong, and highly active. I’ve always teased her by saying she was the closest thing we had to a boy. No gasps of horror and scandal, please – I also told her that I was just like that as a child. I remember looking down when I was little and seeing those same muscular legs and bony knees. That little girl is a mini-me.
That was the first clue: muscles.
The second clue was the Asian woman. You were waiting for this part, right?
3 months ago, I was in WalMart with 3 of our daughters. Strangers sometimes sympathetically wish me a son when they see me with all 7 girls, but I had less than half of them this day. And strangers are usually much calmer than this lady.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a tiny old Asian woman running toward me at top speed. Assuming she wanted to get somewhere in a hurry, I stepped out of her way.
She skidded to a stop, put her hand on my belly, and said with a heavy accent, “You have a boy! When this baby is born, you remember I tell you this: you have a boy!”
Then she ran away.
Weird, huh?
So, 2 clues: muscles, and predictions from highly excited elderly Asian ladies.

I always told people that I’d be like a new mother if I ever had a boy. It was true. I learned something new about diapering today:
Always make sure that The Foreign Object in the diaper is pointed downward
in a safe direction as you fasten the diaper. Otherwise, baby will
mysteriously wet 4 consecutive outfits without ever dampening his diaper.
Why wasn’t this in any of the baby books?

The Boy’s first bath. Not as much fun as you would think for someone who seemed so content to make his arrival in the water. He hardly cried at all when he was born, unlike his bath today. Oh, and he peed his towel.
The Boy has a name. Since Daddy hasn’t made a public announcement on his blog yet, I’ll defer. But keep an eye out.
The Boy got to meet his birthday cousin, my little nephew John Rian who was born on 
Grandma’s birthday last year. Taking pictures of little girls is easy: you show them the camera, and they stand and smile patiently until you’ve had your fill. Boys are very different, aren’t they? I can see that already. The only pictures we have of the front of John Rian are the ones where my sister is holding him in place. Otherwise, we just got to see him lay rubber on the carpet as he took off. All blurry backside shots. Those of you with boys already knew this, didn’t you? You’re laughing at me, aren’t you?
Now Hubby and the children – er, the girls - are off to swim at the lake after the traditional trip to WalMart (how can you go to town w/o stopping at WalMart?). The Boy and I stayed home for some R&R.

The Boy and I are doing fine, and Hubby is still blissfully uploading pictures and videos – in between cooking, cleaning and cracking the proverbial whip over the older 7 children.
I feel fantastic after a long but fairly easy labor. I always feel a bit like a phony for lying about in bed when what I really want to do is run laps around the house, but I’m obediently resting while Hubby is home. I’ve learned the hard way that it’s much easier to rest now when I don’t feel like I need to, than in a week or two when I start to feel run down because I didn’t rest enough at first.
Thank you again for the outpouring of prayers and encouragement during labor! It was wonderful to have so many “visitors” that I’ve never met before, and I’m glad that so many people enjoyed being able to share in The Boy’s birth. I thought live-blogging was a fun idea (I think it was originally Hubby’s idea), but we never imagined how special it would be to so many people!

Now I have to relearn how to type with one hand as I nurse in front of the computer. Blog posts may get a lot shorter from now on.

Not really. Well, maybe, but we still don’t know.
That was mean, right? Sorry – I’m feeling a little giddy because the mudding, sanding and texturing are done and the house is nearly back to its original state of clean (meaning not really clean, but presentable).
Oh, and Hubby put me up to it. He may or may not be feeling giddy over the success of the project, but he loves a good joke.
