update: Evidently I’m not the only one affected by vacation.  WordPress is acting mighty strange too.  It choked and combined 2 separate posts, even putting the comments together.  I’ve forgiven WordPress and even covered its tracks by digging up both posts from the revision records.  Now, even more disjointed than before.  Enjoy.

Severe to the institutes of b12 inversa, small pronouns, enterotoxigenic of whom are coronary also to reduced bacterial disease challenge, have an increased stye of b12 manifestation. prednisone 10mg tabs pack 48's The several same state is completely activated, and barrier cycle is increased normally to decreased site of the life.

Vacation was fun, but I’ve decided to a make a comeback.  It works for TV celebrities, right?  Except the ones who are pegged as has-beens.

So here I am.  I came back from vacation.  That makes it a comeback, right?  Now I’ve got to think of something to blog about, or else get a contract to star in a new movie.  But I’m thinking I make a better blogger than a movie star, which is part of the reason we didn’t follow up on the inquiries we have received in the past year from Wife Swap, MTV, CBS News, or the local news station that I can’t remember at the moment.

Really, we received inquiries from all of the above and probably more.  If we had received one from Extreme Home Makeover we would have jumped on it, because we already have an extreme view from our deck, so we’re halfway there.  Hubby would love to have a 3,000 square foot gameroom and a master bedroom suite with a shower that you could lost in, and the kids would love 7 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms and a pool, and as for me – well, baseboards would be nice.  I’m easy to please.

Wow.  Vacation is not good for increasing the attention span, is it?  It probably doesn’t help that I got back on caffeine over the past week and am now 2 days into quitting cold turkey, mostly because I forgot that I had been drinking real coffee all week.  My head hurts.  And you may have noticed that I’m not quite myself.  I do like to think that I’m usually more coherent than this post.  Please just nod in agreement and send your condolences.

Maybe this will help my frame of mind.  At least it makes me forget the headache:

We used to have an aquarium with a variety of freshwater fish.  They varied from one week to the next, depending upon who had eaten whose eyeballs and fins.   Maybe it wasn’t an entirely peaceful existence for the fish themselves, but I used to love to sit and watch them.
Since daddy longlegs like to congregate behind fish tanks and other sources of moisture here in south Texas, we won’t be setting up an aquarium anytime soon.  It wouldn’t be so bad if they had small congregations like our church, but these daddy longlegs seem to prefer mega-churches.

So I’ll settle for low-moisture setups like this one.   If you like it, you can set up one of your own.  I highly recommend it.

Finally, the chicken coop is finished.  Mostly.  Sort of.  There are a lot of details left, but at least it’s habitable.  Now that I think about it that way, it sounds a lot like our own home.

We’ve primed it with white, but have some green that we intend to use.

Then comes trim around doors, windows, gable ends, etc.  We also need to cut out the window on the other side, where you can’t see.

What you can see is the door, with which I am inordinately pleased.  Hubby found some amazingly simple brackets at Lowe’s, and I used them to put together a set of half-doors in about an hour.  I covered them with rabbit wire to make them predator-proof, though we might fabricate plywood covers for cold weather.  Those of you up north can stop laughing now.  40 degrees feels cold to those of us who live in 90 degrees for 9 months of the year.

See my swing-y doors?  We can stand outside with the bottom closed and lean in to watch our sweet chooks contentedly pecking about the floor.

They also love the feeder I built from scrap siding left after hubby did all the hard work.  The feeder was meant to be big.  I wanted it to easily hold 50 lbs. of food.  As it turns out, I should have done the math first.  My feeder holds something in the vicinity of 150 or 200 lbs.  We could feed once/year.  :)

The pullets seem to like it, too.  Here are 4 of the 13 big girls.  All of our older pullets are about 14 weeks old.

4 feeding medium 300x201 Our chooks

Our week-old chickie-babies live in a large rabbit cage on the floor of the henhouse.  The rabbit feeders work very nicely for them, keeping the food just high enough so that they don’t waste too much.  The bigger girls seem mildly curious, but generally ignore the babies.  There’s a brooder light on top of the cage, but the chickie-babies don’t seem to care about it.  The big girls, on the other hand, want to roost up there near the light.  Silly things.  Don’t they know how warm it is?

and 4 precious little Auracanas.  I went back for more later but they were all gone.  Isn’t she sweet?

Here are the big girls.  Maybe you can help us identify them.

The twins:

Bare Bottom Red, up on the 2×2 we hung for them to roost.  She’s wearing her mini skirt a little too short if you ask me.

Then there’s this little gray and orange gal.  She makes me think of orange sherbet for some reason.

gray n orange medium 300x201 Our chooks

The feather foot.  Her back and bottom are bare, though the feathers are coming in on her back.  I’ve read that some don’t have tails, so I don’t know if the others picked on her before she came to us or if she’s just made that way.

A lovely black and gold:

One solid black, stretching her wings:

black medium 300x201 Our chooks

And our barred rock.  She seems to be the dominant hen, but she’s a benevolent dictator so far.  She’s the most outgoing, curious, and least skittish.  Always the first to find treats, but willing to share.  Yes, we need to change the water.

barred rock medium 300x201 Our chooks

These two seem to be good friends.  They hang out together a lot.

2friends medium 300x201 Our chooks

Does anyone think there might be a rooster in our henhouse?  This one has more wattle than all the rest, more red, and the neck feathers look a little…spiky.  Would we know for sure by 14 weeks, or do some mature so slowly that we could still be fooled?

rooster medium 300x201 Our chooks

Aren’t they sweet?  They still tend to nap in piles, like puppies, especially during daytime naps.  At night most of them roost like grown-up girls.

henparty medium 300x201 Our chooks

They also tend to just flop down in the hay when they sleep.  If I were the nervous type, I’d be constantly poking them to see if they’re still alive.

so tired medium 300x201 Our chooks

See what I mean?  Not dead.  Just tired.

not dead medium 300x201 Our chooks

Now, who can help us identify our big girls?  I know there’s a wide variety and some are mixes.  I would love to hear your best guesses!

  5. What is your nightmare pet? A Chihuahua.
  6. Tell your best/funniest pet story. How about waking one of my sisters up by letting a gerbil loose on her stomach?
  7. Tell your worst/saddest pet story. Finding my gerbil Emily dead under the washer a week or so after she got away.
  8. Did you ever have a scary animal experience? Once at a friend’s birthday party we got to ride a spoiled little pony named Mingus. Well apparently Mingus didn’t like me because the minute I got firmly stationed on his back he began bucking like crazy. I didn’t get hurt, just scared but I haven’t liked horses since.
  9. What was your favorite pet? Emily, my gerbil.
  10. What did you really want to tell us about your pets that didn’t fit in the other questions? Remember the mouse I secretly saved from a trap?  I didn’t know what to feed him so he died a few days later.

After 3 years online, we’re finally turning over a new leaf and starting our own meme. Please make it fun and play along!

The Pet Meme

petmeme The Pet Meme

  1. What is the first pet you remember? Meesha, a female Doberman mix.  When I was 5 she was picked up by the dog catcher and adopted out before we could get her back.
  2. How many different kinds of pets have you owned? Dogs, a coyote/dog cross, cats, rabbits, cockatiels, finches, guinea pigs (briefly), possums, a smallish horse (a family pet, but I rode her the most; her name was The Horse), tons of fish, tarantula (my own, briefly), garter snakes, several orphaned baby birds over the years…my family had a couple of sheep and goats, but we didn’t consider them pets.  They smelled too bad to be lovable.
  3. What was your strangest pet? Our Rottweiler once caught a possum and shaken her like a rat, breaking her neck.  As he did it, we saw little things fly off of her in all directions.  We tracked down the strange quiet noises they made and found 5 baby possums.  We kept them until they were half-grown and it became apparent that there was no spark of intelligence or petliness in them, then dumped them in a nearby neighborhood.
  4. What is your dream pet? Probably our cat, Tim.  He’s friendly, independent, and clean.  He has been with us for nearly 9 years.  His requests are clear and reasonable, and he never bears a grudge when we go away without him.
  5. What is your nightmare pet? An un-housebroken dog in a carpeted house.  Ugh.
  6. Tell your best/funniest pet story. When I was 11, I had a pair of rabbits in a double cage.  I cut a small doorway between their two cages so that they could visit each other.  One day I came home to find the neighbor’s Doberman crammed  entirely inside the rabbit cage.  She had managed to open the door and climbed in trying to catch my rabbits.  The ridiculous creature was wedged so firmly that she couldn’t turn around to get back out.  The rabbits had taken refuge in the other side, safe and sound.
  7. Tell your worst/saddest pet story. Orphaned baby birds usually die within a few days, but I once raised one for several weeks.  His feathers came in and he was learning to fly, and I had high hopes of releasing him soon.  Then one day he just died.  I didn’t care much because he was becoming a nuisance to feed, but I suddenly remember that I had gone the better part of the day w/o feeding him.  I was consumed not with grief, but guilt: did I kill him???
  8. Did you ever have a scary animal experience? I once fell off a horse when my dog grabbed her shoulder through the fence.  I got a huge hematoma on my hip.  That hip still bothers me.
  9. What was your favorite pet? The enormous Doberman-Great Dane cross that was my trusty sidekick for about 6 years.  He was mean and drooly and stood as high as my shoulders, but was utterly devoted to me.  I once teased the school bully and ran all the way home with him hot on my heels.  I reached our yard and Sam met us at the property line, where he stood between us doing his best Rabid Dog impression. It was a glorious moment.
  10. What did you really want to tell us about your pets that didn’t fit in the other questions? One time my pastor put a snake up his brother’s nose.  It’s true.  He told us right from the pulpit.

The tags: 8, in honor of my tarantula’s 8 legs

  1. My children, individually and collectively.  I’m counting them all as one.
  2. Mother Hen, who has tagged me twice in two days.  Gotcha back.  I know you’ll have some good pet stories.  How will you choose?
  3. Homemakerang, who just sent me a lovely package of goodies.  Note to self: post about the goodies.
  4. KimC (too), who has a houseful of boys.  Pets should be interesting there.

mensestra A new pet...

Well, she is not exactly new any more.

This is me (Lydia) holding Sestra.

This is Sestra. She is a 21″ Checker Garter Snake.
ssessstra 261x300 A new pet...I have had her since August 20th.
Many people at my church don’t like snakes. Surprisingly, many of the younger children like her. There is a  3yo, 5yo,and a 2yo(PC4).

I have fed her many geckos and a tree frog. Soon all of the geckos will be gone (winter is coming) so I will feed her baby gerbils.
Sestra might grow up to 4′ long. I think that it would be even more fun to have a big snake.

Are you are wondering where I got my love for snakes? I’ll tell you.
My mom’s mom had a Ball Python that was almost 5′ long.
My Aunt Michelle had gotten Spike (the snake) as a present when he was about 10″ for her birthday when she was 12 or 13.
This was 11 or 12 years ago. I remember how much fun it was to hold him even though we didn’t hold him much. When we did we all (every one who wanted to) held him and were always begging for longer turns. Spike would now be 11 or 12…
only he managed to escape in 2006.

A new pet!!anole Guess what I have...

Today Becca (my 6yo sister) came inside and said
“Hey Lydia, do you want a new lizard ?”
I said “Yes! where is it?” and she said “Over here.”
She walked outside and over next to the stairs and then she pointed and said:
“There it is, in that box.” I looked in the box and a Anole lizard went scurrying
under the house.
Becca and I chased it under the house for approx. 3 minutes and then we finally caught it.
It changes color very fast and is a very fast runner.

Readers note: this is not a picture of the one that I have.

This is Blue.

Kaitlyn and I bought him Wednesday (18th), and he is four months old and he will be ready to breed soon.
We named him Blue (obviously) because he is blue.
He is a Holland lop rabbit, and he is still adjusting to his new home.
After I breed him I will post a picture of my female rabbit Sophie and the babies.
———————————————————————————–turtle 1 300x169 A Rabbit And A Turtle

I went to work with my Dad (Pc3) the next day. We were on a small bridge and all of a sudden Dad stopped the car.  He told Deanna to get out of the car and get a turtle that was resting on the bridge, so she hopped out and carelessly grabbed it up she carefully picked it up and was being especially careful about the way she held it because she didn’t want to get bit (well who does).  We put it in a crate in the back of the van.  We brought it to work with us, and when it was time to come home we put the crate back in the van.
When we got home we set the crate on our deck and left it for the night.  The next morning we took this picture and then we let it go.

The turtle in the picture is probably a cooter.  A friend who used to own a pet shop told us.

She is a very sweet and hyper dog and Perry loves her. He ‘dances’ with her: He holds onto her front paws so she is standing on her back legs and then he walks around the room. It is so funny and cute!!
