My first beach post was sadly lacking in photos because the camera and computer were giving each other the cold shoulder. Now they have kissed and made up, so we can move ahead.

Bethany loved every minute of the day.  She was equally content on somebody’s hip or on her own two feet.  She was in the water, out of the water, watching us contentedly from her shady towel-tent, and napping while the rest of us played some more.  She helped herself to an endless supply of animal crackers and sand-encrusted watermelon.

As you might have expected, The Boy was a crazy man.  He ran endlessly up and down the beach, playing in the water, chasing the birds, taking care of Bethany, and smearing wet sand onto anybody who didn’t see him coming.

Rachael was as sweet as ever, floating and bobbing happily on the waves all day long.

The rest of the kids were a blur.  They chased wildlife and waves, built sandpeople, buried each other, wrinkled their noses at the pit toilets.

Quote of the day: “Whaddya mean the bathrooms are too far?  You can pee in this pool!”

I thought that was pretty clear, but maybe not.  The Boy still came to me when he had to go.  I told him he could go in the ocean, so he stood on the sand, dropped his pants, and went.  That boy.

I asked you to check this post again later for more photos because we couldn’t upload from the camera til we got home.  Now there are so many great photos, I can’t bring myself to bury them in an old post.  They’re in a new one!

Today was our first-ever family trip to the gulf coast.  We did go the beach once in Oregon 7 years ago, but it was spring and COLD. I don’t think anybody actually touched the water, and we only stayed for an hour or two.  It was beautiful and frigid.

Today was different: not as beautiful, but the weather was perfect.  Lest you think I’m complaining about the beauty levels, let me just say that oceans are like pizza and a few other good things in life: even when they’re bad, they good.  And this was not a bad beach!

We aspired in a laid-back sort of way to leave the house at 6:30 this morning, but we didn’t actually pull out until a little after 8.  That’s ok.  We only had a 3 1/2 hour drive, so before lunch time we were pulling into Mustang Island State Park.

10521 1247792313352 1185765038 30805237 190283 n Our beach trip

We packed a lot of food, but I think everybody forgot to eat.  We’re bringing home nearly as much as we took.  There was just too much to do!

The beach was nearly empty and we were able to drive right down to the water’s edge – as close as we dared.  There were just a few other vehicles, spaced at intervals of several hundred feet.  As soon as the engine was shut off, the kids were out the door and gone.

10521 1248057399979 1185765038 30806266 4046003 n Our beach trip

10521 1248058960018 1185765038 30806274 5933587 n Our beach trip

The water was perfect, and so was the weather.  We swam and waded, sat on the beach watching the wildlife, splashed in self-made pools.

We realized we forgot to apply sunblock.

The wildlife was amazing!  Each time a wave hit, the shore was absolutely covered with what looked like tiny polished agates of varying colors.  They were pink, orange, purple, blue, yellow, green.  But as we watched, they all disappeared beneath the surface of the sand.  They were tiny clams!

We saw chipmunks.

We caught shrimp and hermit crabs.  We spotted and avoided moonjellies in the water, and rescued them on the shore.

We realized that we had still forgotten to apply sunblock to the redhead.

We watched as graceful terns and huge, majestic brown pelicans dove for fish all around us.  We were surrounded and stalked by gulls and more terns.  We stalked a great blue heron, who casually lifted off when Megan was just 7 feet away.  We saw what we think were varieties of sandpipers and/or snipes – can’t wait to get home and check the field guide!

Near the end of the day, Megan found a small but complete sand dollar.

And then it was time to go home.

Apparently I got a passing grade on my lesson last week, because the 2009 staff  photo was a delight today.

We left on time, and stopped  along the way for a delicious, relaxing, cheap breakfast at Burger King.  Sausage biscuits and hashbrowns for $1 are hard to beat!

everyone was in good spirits, the weather was beautiful, and the photo shoot went off without a hitch.  Unlike most other years, we had not a hint of vomit anywhere.  Be sure to watch for the staff photo inside the front cover of your new Vision Forum catalog soon.

Afterward each family was treated to an individual photo session, courtesy of several accomplished photographers.  I’m not sure who took this one, but I like it.  Do we make good-looking kids, or what?

We dropped hubby at work and did a few errands before going home.  In the process, we skipped lunch and had half-price Cherry Limeades from Sonic during happy hour.  Still no vomit.  We’re on a roll!

It’s going to take one super-healthy dinner to make up for our diet so far today.  Maybe we’ll go all the way and eat cookies instead of dinner.  Or maybe we’ll just celebrate the crashing blood sugar with a 5 o’clock nap.

Quick vote!  What would you do?

Our 8 new golden babies are 4 weeks old now, and getting cuter by the day.  At first they lived in a plastic kiddie pool in the living room.  By 3 weeks they could climb out of the pool if they set their minds to it, so we really needed to find a better solution.

Sometimes they would stand up with their little paws on the edge of the pool and enjoy the breeze from the box fan.  Do ya think they’ll like car rides when they grow up?

looking out 300x200 A belated birth announcement: puppies!

We often found them out wandering about the living room, crying in little lost puppy voices.

We also found them napping happily behind the sofa or on the bottom bookshelf.

bookshelf baby 300x154 A belated birth announcement: puppies!

On Friday, hubby and I brought home an enormous box for them to stay in.  We covered the bottom with layers of cardboard, to be removed layer by layer, each day.   One end has newspaper and a pee pad to help them get started on paper training.  We scoop out all the babies several times each day to nurse, and scoop them back into the box as soon as they start to sniff and wander about.  So far, so good.  The pee pads are getting heavy use.  They really seem to get the idea!  We hope to have them well-started on housebreaking by the time they go to their new homes.

Each day they go outside to play for a few hours.  At first, I was worried that the chickens might pick on them.   After all, our hens dwarf these little babies.   As it turns out, the chickens are terrified of them, while the pups are dying to find out what chickens taste like.

They bark and growl already, and dream about running even though they can barely walk.  They are beginning to nibble at their mama’s food, but of course she doesn’t mind.  I imagine she’s already wondering how soon she can wean them.  Don’t think poorly of her, though.  For all her sighs and rolling eyes, she usually lets her pups nurse until we wean them for her.  She just can’t bring herself to say no.  She’s a softy at heart.

Is it mean that I’m counting down to the time that we can sell them?  They’re so sweet now, and they’ll be even sweeter at 6 or 8 weeks, but then it’s time for them to go.  Somebody else gets to finish housebreaking these babies.  I’ve got my own babies to tend to.

Becca is the original Crazylegs in our family. It was she who opened my eyes to the wonders of wearing multicolored stripes on my legs, and it was she who taught me not to give a darn whether or not my socks match my clothes.

Alas though, her crazylegs rainbow tights wore out long ago, and she has been forced to wear (gasp!) normal socks. (A more horrifying fate could not happen to a girl who has crazylegs in her blood.) We recently discovered a source of crazyleg socks, and poor Becca has been gazing longingly over shoulders at the tantalizing array of colors…

So, I decided that this problem should be remedied, and when Becca went out shopping with mom, what should she find waiting at the post office but…

I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to tell y’all this story. I think everyone should know this story.

Once upon a time, we were strolling around Main Street in Branson, and I saw a hat. A beautiful hat. It was straw, which made it lightweight enough for summer wear, and right in the front, was a big turquoise. It could have been made for me. Alas, I didn’t have enough money to buy it. That didn’t stop me from trying it on and showing it to Dad though.

I wore it until it was time to leave the little gift store where I found it. Regretfully I put it back on the rack and bade a fond farewell. I sighed a little when I looked back. It needed me.

We wandered around for a few more hours, and I became casually acquainted with a few other hats, but none of them had that feeling of…rightness, that I had sensed in the straw hat. “This relationship would never have lasted” I told them, and placed them one by one back on their respective shelves.

Around 4pm it was time to head back to the hotel. I helped the little kids into their seats in the van and then Dad did something unexpected. He told me to follow him, and started walking back toward the first little gift shop…

The rest is like a fairytale. I was walking on air as we went in the door, and I ran to my hat. I held it close and promised I would never leave again. We would always be together.

Thanks Dad.

I was feeling bored today, so I decided I should do a blog post.

I know that at first glance this post might make me look very vain, so I should probably hurry up and tell y’all that I’m just showing off showing y’all my new haircut.

Isn’t it great? Mom did it last week, and I love it! I don’t have any close up pictures of how it was before, but it was all the same length.

Personally I think Mom doesn’t do herself justice when she talks about her hair cutting skills. When she was my age, she used to layer her own hair!

The way my hair is now, there is a lot less hair to worry about, so I’m not as hot during the day, but it looks thicker because of the layering/tapering.

From the back it still looks just as long,

and it’s a lot more flippy and swishy than it was before! I love it!

Thank you Mom, for doing a stupendous job.

And a picture of Bess because she’s just so darn cute.

btw, am I completely crazy for wanting some of these, and these?

Oh yeah, these too. Also some rainbow striped toe socks.

Life is way too short to wear boring socks.

It’s been a while since I have had time to participate in Sunday Stills but the most recent assignment caught my attention. The uniqueness of eyes has always fascinated me, because if you know someone well enough then you can recognize their eyes anywhere. It’s such a subtle yet obvious difference from one person to the next. You could almost say that your personality is written on your eyes.  So as a challenge to all of you, I’m not going to tell whose eyes are whose. To be fair I ‘ll tell whose eyes are there but not the order. Alrighty then, here we have (not necessarily in this order) :

Recently one of you lovely commenters gave me a link to a site called Sunday Stills, (thank you, Jocelyn) and I have decided to participate.

This week’s assignment is water, which could have been hard since we live in a drought and all except it decided to rain last night. (lots of thunder and lightning) So this morning Kaitlyn, and I went questing for raindrops.

The top one is my favorite hands down. It’s the onion greens in the little patch of onions we planted in our yard (onions are pretty much the only thing the deer don’t eat.) and Kaitlyn suggested that I take pictures of these, she said it would be “so, me.” I have no idea what she is talking about by the way, I use  no more onions then absolutely necessary when I cook, and it’s not my fault that everyone else in this house is an onion wimp. icon wink Sunday Stills: Water

You all know how good rain water tastes right? Well, when I was down on my knees taking close ups of the raindrops I noticed that one hollow stalk that had been cut for soup, was full of water. I like rainwater. So I drank it. YUCK! I like to eat raw onions and it was gross! It was like drinking weak onion kool-aid!

dsc070622 Sunday Stills: Water

This one is just a little puddle that I found. After I got this one we tried taking a picture where Kaitlyn was stepping in it, but it was too shallow for anything other than what I have here. I also found a deeper puddle that was in a little natural bowl in a rock, but I let Kaitlyn take the pictures that time. After she was done though, I was still thirsty, so I knelt down and scooped some of that water up and drank it. It was still in my mouth though when Kaitlyn said in a very thoughtful voice “I wonder if a deer peed in that?” I spit it out. Fast. Then I smacked her. (what a terrible sister she is. I would never, ever do something like that. Right Kait? )

dsc07062 Sunday Stills: Water

This one, I just threw in for good measure. It looks kind of symbolic though, a cactus, with raindrops, and a little sprouty thing on it. Caption, anyone? C’mon, I know you guys have awesome imaginations. Give me a caption.

I LOVE redbuds. They are my favorite flowering shrub next to rhododendrons, so you can imagine my delight when last year I discovered a small one blooming in our side yard. Unfortunately it’s pretty puny, but it still blooms enough to take some pretty pictures.

I like this one because it really shows the texture of the flowers (You can see this if you open this, or any other of these pictures in a new tab).

redbud Redbuds

This one I like because of the way it shows the top flowers in sharp detail, but then rapidly fades and blurs with the twigs, and other blooms in the background

redbud2 Redbuds

I like this one best, because of the myriad of textures it shows, combined with the blurred background. I love using the aperture setting, it makes it easy to take really nice still life pictures.

redbud4 Redbuds

Mom like this one best, because it’s got the various textures, and both the foreground and background are blurred, but I kind of wish the flowers in the foreground weren’t blurred. If they were sharp, I think this would be my favorite. Which is your favorite, and why?

Yesterday Kaitlyn and I were taking pictures of Bethie and some of them were too cute to keep to ourselves!

When we took this pic we were trying to get more of a cupid effect, like those statues or paintings where cupid is balanced on one foot as he shoots an arrow. But as it turns out, she looks more like a karate baby.

when Kait took this pic we were both cracking up over her fat little legs sticking up in the air, and she didn’t seem to mind being upside down at all. Personally I think she will love roller coasters when she grows up, because ever since she was a wee little baby she has loved being tossed in the air, and swung upside down.
